Summerstage Hurricane Benefit Reviews
If you weren't at Webster Hall last night, maybe you were at Summerstage for the hurricane relief benefit show.
Amphibologist just reminded me that Drive By Truckers weren't the only ones who played Webster Hall and Summerstage in one night. J Mascis played both shows too. "...and then things get crazy: lou reed walks on with his band with laurie anderson off to the side...the band that featured. dr. john and allen toussaint came out next, and the place went nuts. dr. john on guitar (!!), and toussiant laying some beautiful piano work..."

SPIN 20th Anniversary Party Reviews
Here's my review: I had so much to do last minute to get ready for Montreal (which I'm leaving for any second), I never made it to Webster Hall last night for SPIN's 20th Anniversary party.
According to Chris, J Mascis and DMC from Run-DMC made surprise appearances, Lady Sovereign's set was pushed back, and Public Enemy was great.

Across the Narrows Set Times | Listen Outside
1. Set times are posted for the Across the Narrows festival happening this weekend. (thx Jonathan)
2. Quick Tip: Keyspan Park in Coney Island is like Summerstage in Central Park. You can you can hear the concert outside the venue. In Central Park you get nature. In Coney Island you get Coney Island. Right next door to the ball park is a bar called Peggy O'Neils. You can sit there and drink outside (and for instance listen to the Pixies from 8:40-10:10 PM on Saturday).

KUDU, Nublu, & a Deli Magazine Show
I've started writing posts about KUDU so many times. The only thing harder for me than finishing a post about them, has been actually seeing them live. It's partly because their Tuesday night residency at Nublu happens so freakin' late. The last time I went (after Pelican Picnic) they still weren't on by 1AM so I left. (I think they usually go on by 11 though).
If you don't remember, Nublu gets credit for launching the career of Brazilian Girls. Word on the street is that KUDU will be their next superstars. Two more rumors: They sound like Siouxsie & they're better live than on record.
Sometimes they play other places, like this Saturday (October 1, 2005) when they hit Scenic in honor of the latest issue of Deli Magazine. Other performers at the multiple venue "Alphabet City" event include Ezra Reich, Gym Class, Elodie O, Beat Pharmacy, Die Romantik and The Two Man Gentlemen Band. Get more info and tickets. As usual, I'll miss them.

* Coolfer wrote almost the exact same thing I did, but shorter. We even both used the phrase "word on the street." Scary.

Walking Concert @ Sin-e, NYC | CMJ | pics
Back to CMJ Day 4 (Saturday, Sept 17, 2005)... After Chad VanGaalen's set at the SubPop showcase I left Bowery Ballroom to take a break. Then I stopped at Sin-e to check out Walking Concert before going back to Bowery to see the last few songs of Rogue Wave followed by Wolf Parade (which was followed by Towers of London).

Pop Montreal 2005 Happening Now | Antony & Stuff too
Pop Montreal is to Montreal what CMJ is to NYC...I think. I'll sort of find out tomorrow because Montreal is where I'll be. Thursday night I'll catch Antony & The Johnsons with CocoRosie at Cabaret La Tulipe (sounds fancy, I know). After that I'm not sure what I'll do...it's SUPPOSED to be a vacation. I won't see Interpol while I'm there (they play at the same time as Antony somewhere else in Montreal), but fortunately/unfortunately I'll be home in time to see them at Webster Hall Sunday night (yes, I'll miss Across the Narrows).
"You would have to work pretty hard to avoid Pop Montreal this week. In its fourth year, the indie music festival is bigger than ever." [The Gazette]
"A few of the artists that will be blessing the jewel of Quebec include Enon, Black Mountain, Interpol, Stars, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Busdriver, Beck, Coco Rosie, Antony and the Johnsons, Chromeo, The Dirtbombs, Weird War, Foxy Brown, Strung Out, Architecture in Helsinki, Kings of Leon, and Alex Chilton's new best buddies, The Posies. Now please keep in mind that this list is in no way exhaustive. There are quite a few more bands playing over the festival's five nights, lots of which, I'm sure, are very, very popular in Canada but that these American eyes of mine just don't recognize." Art Brut Live Reviews, Tour & Tix on Sale
"Art Brut are without doubt a band that need to be seen live, and I can assure you they’re worth seeing… and worth seeing soon." [Skiddle]
"In theory it shouldn't work but as a live spectacle Art Brut are about as exciting as it gets at the moment, and long after the band have packed their gear away and headed back down the M1, Pelham Street is awake with cries of 'Art Brut - Top Of The Pops!'" [Drowned in Sound]
"A night in the company of Art Brut is never anything less than eventful." [NME]

'Ready Art Brute?' he deadpans for each song before launching into art-punk tirades which often sound suspiciously like the one which preceded it. The ironic nods and post-modern winks occasionally grate, but when a band has more cheek than a toilet roll advert it becomes clear that people need this timely kick up the arse. [Drowned in Sound]
"They are, perhaps, Park Life-era Blur without the preening and sneering; the Fall for beginners, Pulp for a new disenfranchised generation, with a taste of Magazine's feline tension and a wallop of Nirvana's anthemic surge. Most of all, they are absolutely nothing but Art Brut." [Guardian]
Tickets are now on sale for Art Brut's November 10th show at Mercury Lounge in NYC at Ticketweb where tickets are also available for Brooklyn, NJ, Ontario, and Southern California.

The Rapture are back | Shows @ Bowery & Crash Mansion
"After nearly two years of non-stop touring in support of 2003's Echoes LP, the Rapture have begun writing material for the follow-up. 'We have 25 things that are all pretty good.'" [The Village Voice]
"Yesterday we put you on to the current happening of the Stills, but the other band who's whereabouts were presently unknown was the Rapture. Though there were scattered updates about a month ago, actual music hasn't really been forthcoming until now, with the Rapture monkeys contributing a remix on the new Supersystem 12-inch for 'Miracle'" [Fader]

De Novo Dahl @ Cake Shop, NYC | CMJ | pics

De Novo Dahl came out of nowhere (Nashville actually) with an awesome sounding, and visually entertaining, set Saturday afternoon during CMJ at Cake Shop (September 17, 2005). They were the first band to play the free show thrown by SpinArt and Startime.
Listen to & Download songs on their website.

* As NashvilleZine points out, this show was even highlighted by Tricia McDermott at CBS News
* fraggleuprising saw them at Lincoln Center and said they were incredible
* Tale of Two Cities asks the obvious question. Were they wearing underwear?

This was the first band I saw on CMJ Day 4. Towers of London was the last one.

Ted Nugent vs. Vegans
"Ted Nugent is not an evolution guy. This became apparent recently when Mr. Nugent, the 57-year-old rocker, huntsman and N.R.A. board member, brandished a blood-drenched liver he had just pulled from a freshly slain deer. He used the moment, during filming of his forthcoming reality show on the Outdoor Life Network, 'Wanted: Ted or Alive,' to explain the meaning of life to five contestants who were in various states of awe and nausea." Dylan | Icon or "Self-regarding old money-machine?"
"The involvement of Scorsese, another monstrously over-celebrated talent who did his best work 30 years ago – has anyone got to the end of Gangs of New York without being paid to do so? – is symbolism enough. But the hyperbole involved in this transatlantic, public-spirited, nearer-my-God-to-thee Dylanfest, as if venerating some living western saint, marks a high-watermark of pretention. The whole concept is flabby with self-congratulation. At the heart of the Dylan affliction, of course, is the sly old fox himself, he who has been playing games with his adoring public ever since he first picked up a guitar." [The Herald]

The Ponys & 2005 Atlantic Antic, Brooklyn, NY | pics

I haven't been to every street fair in NYC, but I feel like the annual Atlantic Antic might be the best one. There's probably 6-10 live music stops along the route that runs down Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.

The highlight this year for indie rock fans was the stage outside Magnetic Field. Bands like Detachment Kit, the Hong Kong and the Ponys played for free to fans and random passerbys.

After seeing the White Stripes in Coney Island the night before, I arrived just in time on Sunday (September 25, 2005) to catch The Ponys' full set and spend the rest of the day walking around.

Meg White's Gawker Stalker
The following paragraph was sent to Gawker by a reader (NOT ME)...
"Meg White from the White Stripes came into my favorite dive bar, Mona's, in the East Village on Friday night (9/23) around midnight with a group of longhaired hipsters and some tall dude wearing a black hat (sadly, not Jack White). They took a table in the back and nobody really bothered them, but my friend and I did chat her up while in line for the bathroom (she initially tried to cut in line). I was surprised that she was taller than me, though both of us were in heels, and she had this cute quality to her. But long flowy black hair aside, there was virtually nothing recognizable about her. My (male) friend tried to buy her a drink after our bathroom line encounter, but she had just started on her Jameson and seemed complacent, so he bought her friend a Heineken and retreated without pressing her for the backstage passes to their Saturday night show (in Coney Island) that we had sent him over to weasel out of her. Post-concert note: she looks ten times hotter about 100 feet away, under stage lighting, wielding drumsticks." [This & more stalking @ Gawker]

"What’s the best way to describe the new album from Parisian future rappers TTC? Like the Sex Pistols jamming with Daft Punk in French? The soundtrack to the victory of machines over humans as directed by Luc Besson? The funniest, thuggiest outpouring of nerd posturing in the history of hip hop, ever (and still in French)? Or maybe as all of these things (in French)." [Big Dada Press Release]

One of the (three) rappers was the funniest frontman I've seen in ages - a really sweaty fat white guy in a tattered pink T-shirt who was going fucking nuts onstage." [Random Musings]

"Showtime! Just when it seemed impossible to stuff another crazily fun live show into the month of September, we got out the shoehorn and jammed TTC into the Knitting Factory for Thursday the 29th. Thats close to two weeks away - more than enough time to brush up on your reading, pick up copies of Batards Sensibles and Cuizinier's Pour Les Filles mixtape, and see just why we're so excited for these dudes to finally hit up NYC again." Random Eugene Mirman Encounter
Late Friday night (Sept 23, 2005) I was walking down 11th Street in Manhattan when I came upon a camera crew outside Rififi. They were filming recent Sub Pop-signee Eugene Mirman who actually performs at Rififi almost every Wednesday night (the "Invite them Up" show). He was talking about his love for the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. I assume it was for the DVD the Trachtenburgs are making. As usual, every word coming out of Eugene's mouth was hilarious. Indie Bands Closer to Mainstream | The Next Death Cab
"Death Cab's fifth album, "Plans," has sold 128,000 copies in two weeks after debuting at No. 4. Modest Mouse's "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" has gone platinum. Last November, singer-songwriter Connor Oberst's band, Bright Eyes, had two songs top the Billboard singles chart — knocking out a duet by Usher and Alicia Keys and sending the indie rock world into a tailspin.....
...If there's one band iconic of the scene, it's Arcade Fire. Hailing from Montreal, a bastion of indiedom, their debut, "Funeral," blew away critics and has sold over 200,000 discs.
"I think they're like the best band, period," says Carl Newman, frontman of the New Pornographers, echoing the feelings of many indie rockers....
...So are majors now trying to sign "the next Death Cab"?
"If all of a sudden, that becomes the flavor of the month and all the labels want to sign a band like Death Cab for Cutie, then we're onto the next cycle of alternative rock and it's dead as soon as they start it," says radio host Harcourt. "So I hope not." [Yahoo News]
"The buzz even persuaded producers of "The O.C.," which is known for its indie rock soundtracks, to ask Clap Your Hands to perform on the show. The band turned it down. Too much popularity, after all, can diminish one's credibility." [NY Times] (via Kathrynyu)

Seu Jorge @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics (part 3)

The Seu Jorge show at Bowery Ballroom on September 11, 2005 was like a play in multiple acts. The first and 6th were solo Jorge covering Bowie in Portuguese. The 2nd and 4th were Jorge and band playing Seu Jorge songs. The 3rd was an interactive stand-up percussion routine featuring the members of Jorge's band. The 5th was Jorge standing for the first time as he recited a mix of Portuguese and English spoken word to a background of music. I couldn't really understand what he was saying (except for a bit about New Orleans and 9/11), but the actor was able to make it moving nonetheless. Given the many parts of the performance, I couldn't help but separate the pictures into multiple posts. This is part three.

Halloween w/ The Mountain Goats
Everyone's talking about a secret Mountain Goats show at Knitting Factory in NYC on Halloween. If it was secret, they must of un-secreted it because Ticketweb and Knitting Factory's site both clearly list "The Mountain Goats, Grizzly Bear, The Prayers and Tears of Aurther Digby."
Tickets still on sale for the GrizzlyBear-less show at Bowery Ballroom on Oct. 29 too.
Tickets also amazingly still on sale for the Grizzly bear benefit show at Bowery on Oct. 3rd.

And in other Mountain Goats news, they'll play London with TV on the Radio and others on November 17th. It's all part of 4AD's 25th Anniversary celebration.

Q and not U played their Final Shows
"So I finally had the "existential vacation" I had been attempting at. Thursday and Friday was the last 2 q and not u shows which were so amazing. Today was the Operation Cease fire protest in DC. they said 300,000 people marched today. The Bellrays are amazing." [emptycalm's livejournal]
"q and not u's last song played together was "Soft Pyramids"." [lost's livejournal]
"So. This is what all the blogeoise skipped Q & Not U's last NY shows for? I don't know who you bloggaz get your scenester marching orders from, but something's awry. At least diversify a little. If Gothamist Jen sends five of you to Maroon 5 or Taking Back Sunday, at least one of you should break ranks and check something fresh and fleeting. Or maybe I'm missing something; does Anton's urine have some euphoric effect as it drizzles down your cochleae? Well, at any rate, it was a terrific show from an oddly underrated band going out on the way up. [A commenter in my BJM post]

Biafra, Baez, etc...performed Against the War
"The march spilled onto the Washington Monument grounds for the 'Operation Ceasefire Concert' and rally hosted by United for Peace and Justice. The scene was a bit of a flashback to the 1960s, with Joan Baez singing 'Blowin’ in the Wind' and Wayne Kramer of the MC5 strutting with his guitar, followed by the hard-rocking soul of the Bellrays. Emcee Jello Biafra cracked jokes holding a cardboard sign: 'Make Pizza Not War.'" [Village Voice]
