Sleeping is giving in, man. Didn't you listen to the band?
Great pics.

"dude just stays hip."
Well, if you ignore his Simon LeBon costume, sure. But I know what you mean.

Hurray!!!
Besides Regine's god awful singing and the horrible opening bands this was a magical night!
Posted by Camille | September 16, 2005 8:15 AM
It was definetly a great show but they needed to turn it up I was directly in between the light post and I still thought it wasn't loud enough. But still a great time and I have never seen that place so packed
Posted by danfun | September 16, 2005 8:17 AM
dave! did you spot jaymay on the side of the stage? and robin williams center right in the crowd?
Posted by wes | September 16, 2005 10:12 AM
Camille: regine's singing was not awful at all! and her robot movements were charming :p
Posted by wes | September 16, 2005 10:24 AM
IS there a setlist from last night at all? What was the name of the new tune they played?
Posted by Adam | September 16, 2005 10:34 AM
The first few songs were so quiet in fact that I found myself yelling "Turn it up!" in between (sorry if I yelled in anyone's ear - I think someone slipped me a Rheingold and messed up my fancy Stella buzz). They're so good the sound issues didn't matter... great show, fantastic encore.
Posted by george | September 16, 2005 10:41 AM
What kind of camera do you use for these pics?
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2005 11:08 AM
They didn't play any new songs (unless you count queen bitch as new), but they did play a few from their ep
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2005 11:12 AM
Did they play a new tune? They played a lot from the ep...Bowies voice was fantastic. I had chills.
Great pics.

those pictures are so sweet. what kind of camera do you use?
Posted by Lg | September 16, 2005 11:22 AM
Please tell me somebody recorded that show. I want to own it. How come no pic's of when Whin Butler wrapped his mic chord around that guitar players neck and then put the base of the mic stand into his back. I thought they were going to fight.
That's what this indie rock machine needs more of to grease its wheels .... full contact, bare knuckle brawling.

I am so happy you got such amazing pictures, as it seemed too good to be true. When they said they were going to play a David Bowie song as an encore, I thought, what a lovely idea for a cover as some of their songs have a david bowie flare to them. But I nearly died when the real david bowie came out on stage to sing it with them. IT WAS DAVID BOWIE! Live and in the flesh, singing Queen Bitch. I truly felt so supremely lucky to have been there.

oh, and what's this noise about about Camille's voice being bad. What are you nuts? That girl's got crazy good pipes.
Posted by JJ Grob | September 16, 2005 12:01 PM
actually my fiancee, who has perfect pitch, while she likes AF, she definitely is not a fan of Regine's vocals, which are typically quite flat for the most part.
i don't mind 'em sometimes, but sometimes i agree w/ her.
Posted by solace | September 16, 2005 12:06 PM
@solace: well technically jimi hendrix and bob dylan's vocals were also quite flat or otherwise bad, yet some would call them amazing.
Posted by wes | September 16, 2005 12:37 PM
I'd be lying if I said that that wasn't one of the best encores I've ever seen. Amazing...
Hey Newman, still think you made the right choice?
Posted by Chris | September 16, 2005 12:42 PM
yeah

Jeez, that's a nice camera. Though isn't 8MP a bit excessive? I'd love a 350mm zoom, though... and a long lens that's good in low light conditions, and an exterior manual focus ring.
And a pony.
As for the show, I had this secret wish that both Davids, Bowie and Byrne, would be prancing about with AF during their encore. And then (after the subsequent Cloud Cult concert), I could die. Pony or no.
Posted by J | September 16, 2005 12:53 PM
What the... There simply cannot be two Neuman's on one site!

Did you know that you are being linked from davidbowie.com?
Posted by Dave D | September 16, 2005 1:03 PM
back to homegirl's vocals. I think she comes from a jazz background and it sounds really musical to me. YOu don't think she ripped it on that Brazil song? I think she sounds especially good live. Stuff like perfect pitch doesn't really have anything to do with music. It's the math side of the equation. Who cares?
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2005 1:25 PM
I love this band more and more everyday...
I'm dying to see them live (if I would've been at yesterday's show and saw Bowie come out, I probably would've gone insane!)
Posted by henry | September 16, 2005 3:45 PM
Those are some seriously great fucking pics. Kudos.

Did anyone else think that the crowd was terrible? Even Win was commenting on how quiet everyone was...
Posted by Stefan | September 17, 2005 12:48 AM
i thought the show was really tepid and boring.
Posted by k | September 17, 2005 9:50 AM
The crowd was awful. I was the only one around me singing along and clapping. I felt like the Wall Street guy at the CYHSY Seaport show. Luckily people got into it during the encore.
Posted by Bao | September 17, 2005 11:06 AM
The crowd was not that bad. I've been sorrounded by worse. What's wrong with working on Wall St. and still listening to good music?
Posted by B | September 17, 2005 12:32 PM
Stefan--
New York crowds are criminal compared to how expressive people are in the rest of the world. I will never be a New York crowd kiddie. I will also jump and dance and clap and sing along.
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2005 12:42 PM
Well when the lead singer points out how quiet everyone is... I think that qualifies a bad crowd. Of course I've seen worse but after only seeing amazing crowd after amazing crowd at each of their shows, this one was very disappointing. Also no disrespect to the Wall Street crowd, I was just simply referring to this guy (http://www.themodernage.org/2005/08/clap-your-hands-say-khaki-man.html) and how he was dancing and no one around him was.
Posted by Bao | September 18, 2005 12:55 PM
yup...i just moved to nyc and cannot believe you people (well, most of you people). every show i've been here has been populated by a bunch of lifeless people looking bored and unmoved by the music. it doesnt make you cool to stand there and look cool.
(only exception so far: !!! on friday. awesome)
Posted by funkinshoes | September 18, 2005 1:22 PM
the reason we new yorkers are so quiet is because we're fucking thinking. we can't help it that we're smarter than the rest of the country.
Posted by drjimmy | September 18, 2005 2:43 PM
what, you can't think and dance at the same time? doesn't sound very smart to me.
oh and by the way i'm not from the "rest of the country"...i'm from a better country
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2005 2:55 PM
what, you can't think and dance at the same time? doesn't sound very smart to me.
didnt you post over at af.net that you thought the crowd was terrible as well?

Yes, I'm the same guy. I'll give you another clue: I'm the guy with a sense of humor. Maybe that'll help you read my posts.
Posted by DrJimmy | September 18, 2005 3:57 PM
regine's voice may not always be on perfect fucking pitch but her performance on "in the backseat" nearly brings me to tears. vocals cracking and turning to breathiness adds humanity to a performance. it was a great show. as for the crowd, this was possibly the LEAST RESERVED nyc audience i've seen. where i was everyone had their hands in the air, people were clapping in time (sort of) and singing along. it was only dead quiet when the band were being really quiet. gave me the chills.
more of my perspective an pictures here:

In reference to people commenting on how quiet and "lifeless" NYC audience are, I sometimes wish that people would let down their "cool" guard more and express themselves more, but I also think that indie-rockers in general (and I include myself here as an example) are quiet, reserved and don't like to draw too much attention towards themselves for fear of embarassment (again, I may just be talking about myself here, but I'm sure plenty of you also fall into this category).
Furthermore, ever seen a show in Japan? The crowds there make a NYC indie-rock audience seem like Heavy Metal Parking Lot since they're so reserved and polite (and completely silent!) during any given artist's performance.
Posted by incarag | September 19, 2005 1:09 PM
was anyone at their webster hall show? yeah, the crowd was unbelievably bad at that show (win seriously told the crowd at least six different times to rock out) but it wasn't the crowds fault. i mean holy shit, i had never seen a band put on a worse performance (including the absolutely unbearable opener man-man and the hourslong wait for them to show up). they had two huge smoke machines and lame laser lights and carried on like they were U2 playing an intimate gig. that really ruined them forever for me. their music is really mediocre and they're just not good live. want to see an amazingly loud, perfect, professional rock band go crazy? see british sea power.

In all fairness to you, John, I have a friend who also had the misfortune of attending the Webster Hall show back in February and he said basically the same thing and I also remember other bloggers saying similar things. I was lucky enough to attend the Irving Plaza show the next night and I have to say that they were unequivocally the best band I've seen all year (even better than Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, The Trashcan Sinatras, The Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park and other perennial favorites of mine). They didn't have any smoke machines or anything like that, but they were super intense and energetic and passionate and about 10x better than they are on record. Oh and that's not to mention the fact that David Byrne came out to sing "Naive Melody" with them for the encore. Just awesome.
So what's the moral of the story then? Webster Hall sucks.

I hope people had as a good time like I did, even though it was 100% humidity. New Yorkers can be fickle with concerts. My friends and I were speechless at the end, trying to put into words what we saw.

I have a big problem, everytime I see David Bowie. As I was a child i saw this singer in a live concert, he worked up a sweat and than he spitted out and creamed his face with it.... it is more than 25 years ago, but I still can not see David Bowie without seeing him spitting ;-))

In all high principles to you, John, I have a friend who also had the misfortune of assisting the Webster Hall unfold assure in February and he said basically the comparable thing and I also hark back supplementary bloggers saying approximating things. I was expedient satisfactoriness to audit the Irving Plaza witness the joined sable tenebrosity and I have to say that they were unequivocally the best band I've seen all year (even above than Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, The Trashcan Sinatras, The Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park and separated diuturnal favorites of extricate).
