Books by Michael Azerrad
"...After goofing off for a few years I eventually blundered into rock journalism, and wound up writing a couple hundred articles for Rolling Stone while writing for MTV News and a bunch of other magazines. A professional highlight was interviewing Ray Charles on the phone and making him laugh. Then I wrote Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, published in 1993. After a satisfying foray into the dot-com side of things, I started writing my current book, Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991. Now I'm thinking about what book to write next..." [twbookmark]
"Nirvana came out of nowhere in 1991 to sell nearly five million copies of their landmark album Nevermind, whose thunderous sound and indelible melodies embodied all the confusion, frustration, and passion of the emerging Generation X. Come As You Are is the close-up, intimate story of Nirvana -- the only book with exclusive in-depth interviews with bandmembers Kurt Cobain, Krist Noveselic, and Dave Grohl, as well as friends, relatives, former bandmembers, and associates -- now updated to include a new final chapter detailing the last year of Kurt Cobain's life, before his tragic suicide in April 1994." "Finally in paperback, the story of the musical revolution that happened right under the nose of the Reagan Eighties- when a small but sprawling network of bands, labels, fanzines, radio stations, and other subversives reenergized American rock with punk rock's do-it-yourself credo and created music that was deeply personal, often brilliant, always challenging, and immensely influential. Our Band Could Be Your Life is a sweeping chronicle of music, politics, drugs, fear, loathing, and faith that is already being recognized as an indie rock classic in its own right." Fun Fact: Michael's voice can be heard from a TV in the movie Last Days.
