Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Pianos, NYC | pics

Tonight (September 20, 2005) I heard Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre rant and rave on stage, in the crowd, and in the sound booth at Pianos in NYC. He confirmed the news that his stuff was stolen. He started with audience members. They started with him. Then after about an hour, he disappeared into the crowd without ever even playing one full song.

anyone see the bowery show? same situation? I got rid of my tix for that and instead went to Irving Plaza Katrina benefit that night...

this guy is bad Vaudville.
It is all schtick.
why does he play shows if this is all he does?

I saw BJM at Mercury Lounge about a year ago and it wasn't like that at all. They played for about an hour and fifteen minutes and it was a relatively normal (and enjoyable) set with Anton & co playing and finishing lots of songs.

Bowery's Sunday night show was great; 7-8 songs played between 11:00ish and 2:30ish. Yes; there were Anton rants, but there were also 15+ minute anthems.

northsix was a waste of time too. anton has officially become worthless as a performer. i can hang out with five year-olds for free if i want to see petulant temper tantrums.

So. This is what all the blogeoise skipped Q & Not U's last NY shows for? I don't know who you bloggaz get your scenester marching orders from, but something's awry. At least diversify a little. If Gothamist Jen sends five of you to Maroon 5 or Taking Back Sunday, at least one of you should break ranks and check something fresh and fleeting. Or maybe I'm missing something; does Anton's urine have some euphoric effect as it drizzles down your cochleae?

Well, at any rate, it was a terrific show from an oddly underrated band going out on the way up.

Posted by Delescluze | September 21, 2005 9:58 PM

that's right. i only see shows by bands that have been around for 10+ years because whoever it is that does this site mentions em. i guess i should be showing more support for unheralded, unhyped, unpublicized, fresh little strugglers like q and not u. hey, i have a hot tip on this crazy group called sleater-kinney that's coming around soon...i think i might check that out! (and they're WOMEN, too! alert the village voice!)

My comment was directed to the bloggers, not readers. My suggestion that they're following someone's order is tongue-in-cheek, but it does seem there's some sort of consensus when it comes to skipping Q and Not U. (See the main blogs coverage of the Siren Fest) Which is curious to me because nobody seemed to dislike Q and Not U either.
I just don't get why ALL the bloggaz whose coverage I like chose a Brian Jonestown Face-Fart over the Q's last shows.
Though Heartonastick has been quiet lately. Maybe he'll come through with a review.

Anton is the Blind Date of live music.

If you think "Different Damage" sucks, there's nothing I can do for you besides recommend a high-pressure ear-cleaning. "Different Damage" is EXQUISITE.

Don't you think Anton has a right to be in a bad mood if his vehicle full of precious vintage music equipment was stolen the night before!!!!!!

And all of you who keep mentioning what an asshole he is — get over it and move on — stop taunting him. BJM doesn't need you as a fan.

hey, maybe those stolen instruments are being used to fund THE REVOLUTION that anton loves rappin about! guess it's one thing when anton fucks everyone else but SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT when he gets fucked over! what's that whole golden rule thing all about?

seems like what the apologists mean by "true fan" is someone who refuses to admit anton could ever be/do wrong and would gladly let him take a shit on him/her because he, uh, wrote some good songs. that makes a lotta fucking sense. shouldn't those kinds of fans be off listening to doors records and reading jimmy morrison poetry w tears in their eyes or something?

Posted by franklin | September 26, 2005 11:56 PM

hey man, that's an insult to Morrison--and besides, Anton is MUCH shorter!
