Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Warsaw, Brooklyn, NY | pics

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played Warsaw in Brooklyn last night (Sept 7, 2005).

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Warsaw

It was the best show out of the six times I've seen them. They were great. The large capacity crowd thought so too.

I am so sick of hearing about this absolutely shitty and sadly over-rated band. They are terrible.

Um Brooklynvegan?

The wonderful band The National played. Clap Your Hands opened for them. Fucking posers leave halfway through the show just cause pitchfork tells them to.

anonymously bashing CYHSY is so last month.

Posted by brooklynvegan | September 8, 2005 5:01 PM

The phrase "so last month" is so last year...

did anyone else think the sound was kinda shitty? that place is just too damn big, makes pretty much any band sound muddy

Doesn't anyone realize how this site works? Shows usually get split up into multiple posts. There is no National mention here because there will be in a future post.

The same thing happened here, but with King of France: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2005/08/alec_ounsworth_2.html

I was standing near the stage for CYHSY and thought it sounded great. I was further back for the National and though it sounded horrible...wasn't sure if it was the mix or the venue.

pitchfork tells people when to leave shows? they must really have more mind controlling powers than I thought.

BV- Friday, Bowery? make it seven?

The place was packed to dangerous levels for CYHSY, and only 1/2 full for The National, which struck me as a little sad.

CYHSY put on the better of the two shows though....The National are a bit lacking in stage presence IMO.

I think Mike is right on here. Every time I've ever been to Warsaw, the sound has always been a lot better towards the front or middle of the floor (and it's not bad the few times that I've been in the balcony, either; in that way it's kind of like Irving Plaza, where I was up in the balcony for Idlewild last night), but it's absolutely terrible towards the back of the floor (like when I saw BRMC there back in 2002).

With that said, I love Warsaw. It's out of the way location ensures that shows don't sell out as fast as in other venues and I adore the pierogies, blintzes, Polish sausage (sorry BV) and Polish beer that I can't spell or pronounce, though I think it starts with a 'z' ('zywiec' maybe?). It reminds me a lot of VFW Halls and other similar-type venues where I used to see hardcore shows in the early to mid '90s.

I would have stayed... except Alec kept singing that "Zaytoons" song. It made me too hungry for some humus and shwarma.

Ha!

The Warsaw's sound is usually pretty bad -- though I haven't been there in quite some time. The one time I stood right up front the sound was fine. I'm usually further back and at times that venue sounds about as good as a high school gym (which it's closer to than a normal music venue).

Uh, can someone explain why they feel that CYHSY is overrated? I mean, sure they've gotten more than their share of buzz, but I don't think anyone's quite proclaimed them the savior of music (unless a 9.0 on pitchfork qualifies you for messiah). Besides, if what band's get buzz on pitchfork and in the blogosphere is not what's important to you--and "the music" is--how can you not agree that they have quality lyrics, amazing hooks, a fresh sound and a beat that even the indie kids have to dance to. You don't have to like it. But you have to acknowledge that, at least for the genre, it kills.

I'm really anticipating their CMJ show at the Mercury Lounge next Friday since:

1. Haven't seen em before
2. Mercury Lounge has pretty good sound
3. They do a pretty good job of keeping the venue NOT packed to dangerous levels.

Let me quickly add that Ambulance LTD is headlining and is coming up after CYHSY...should be a sweet show.

Posted by Eric | September 8, 2005 8:37 PM

Zywiec is pronounced "JHIV-its"

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2005 9:56 PM

I think CYSYH may be ready to headline a show

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is absolutely mediocre at live performance. Instead, the National rocks!
I think people who left Warsaw right after CYHSY's set and missed the National's awesome gig are totally pathetic.
I feel sorry for them.

NYC--if live performance is your thing, wait for the next Kiss reunion.

At a Philly show last month, the CYHSY set was also packed to dangerously insane levels. After they were done, the next 2 acts played to half capacity.

They should be flipping the headlining on this tour and having the National open for CYHSY. Maybe have the National break down CYHSY's stuff after the set, too. Bring it on National fans!

The Village Voice has a review up of the show.
They liked the National better, and suddenly, all is right in the world.

That's interesting, because the blurb the national got in the Voice when they played their Merc shows said how mediocre they were.

But fear not National fans: I have a feeling most of you are going to the show tonight (rather than Wenesday's), since they were announced before CHYSHY was added, and only after that did the Warsaw show appear.

I don't hate CYHSY, I'm not a big National fan either.
I just said what the truth is, the National is a far better band than CYHSY on every aspect. Except one thing, they are unluckier than CYHSY cause pitchfork didn't give them a 9.0.
The National opens for CYHSY?? For God's sake, please .

I'm with nyc here. I know this thread has been played out before, but after hearing the album and seeing them live last month at South Street Seaport, I will say that I thought that they were good live (though Devotchka were way better) and on the record, I like the 3 songs that they're offering for a free download on their site, but the rest of it doesn't do anything for me. Thus, I just don't get the massive (admittedly grassroots) hype behind these guys. Then again, I'm not a big Talking Heads '77 fan (I prefer the Remain in Light-era), so I think that has something to do with it. Oh and if any of you are curious, here's a review of that show:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y5DC124CB

I think these guys really are The Strokes of '05 except for the lack of the major label hype machine. When Is This It? came out, everyone and their mother was blowing them and proclaiming them the saviors of rock and roll, but while I thought the album was decent and had 3 or 4 really good songs, overall it left me cold and is a bit dull and I feel the same way about The Clap.

Furthermore, I read in the Voice today that they may be signed to Columbia. This is an unsubstantiated rumor, however, unless someone else knows something that I don't. The 4AD thing turned out to be false, though.

Oh and I still many who are there to see them are there to see the "cool" band of the moment, but that's always how these things go.

i saw the bowery show last night. the crowd was much more excited about the national it seemed and it didn't thin out after CYHSY. the warsaw show was probably more CYHSY's audience and vice versa for bowery. i saw richard from the arcade fire grooving along to the national! they must be in town for the summerstage show.

to get into the friday show at the mercury...what time do you think i need to get there for tix? do people line up for tix hours in advance?

Posted by Rapps | September 14, 2005 4:13 PM

s'not exactly a "tix" situation, me thinks... more like just a cover charge at the door, but i guess that's just splitting hairs...

as for a time, I've no clue..

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2005 4:16 PM

I know its part of the cmj going on this week...and mercury's site said no advanced tix are sold. I've never been there before...how does it usually work when its the day of the show?
