Fight the Power. Public Enemy closed the show in Washington Square Park yesterday (Aug 31, 2005). They were the unannounced guest at the “CBGB Forever” rally, but since the whole event was only announced 24 hours earlier, that detail hardly counts (unless you want to analyze their reason for keeping it secret).
It was the (2 song) PE reunion that never happened after Hellfest was cancelled.
“House of Pain’s Everlast introduced Chuck D et al. by saying, “New York City can’t let this place go away” because “it would be a crime.” He also took the low road, screaming words everyone who preceded him onstage perhaps wanted to say but couldn’t: “F— the guy standing in the way.” Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and the rest of Public Enemy capped things off by challenging everyone in attendance to “Fight the Power.” [MTV]
“Flav conducted a moment of silence and wished G.B. (God Bless) to the victims of the hurricane…then he proceded to thank the audience for watching “Strange Love” and “The Surreal Life.” What a classy guy. Chuck D told reporters, “CBGB always gave musicians a platform to say important things. It’s time we did something to save one of New York’s great institutions.” [Gothamist]
