Sound Team | the BV interview & MP3 | CMJ 2005

Sound Team

The Arcade Fire’s Summerstage CMJ show sold out in like 3 days. A month passed with no word on who would be opening. Rumors of Wolf Parade (who are playing the Sub Pop showcase instead) were squashed when a relatively unknown band from Austin, Texas were finally announced as opener. They are Sound Team, and I asked them a few questions. They also supplied an MP3 from their 5 song EP that’s out in the fall.

Don’t Turn Away (MP3)

How did you land the opening slot at arguably one of the most exciting concerts happening during CMJ?
Win Butler asked us to play the show.

Is it true you’re friends with Voxtrot (another band from Austin)?
They are our friends. Last summer their label Cult Hero released 4 songs from our Secretly Canadian/St. Ives 12″ (called Marathon) on a CDEP, which we sold out of on that tour. They have nice pants and are good people.

Do you know Single Frame too?
No ma’am/sir.

Are you the same band that put out “Into the Lens” in 2001? What have you been doing since?
Into the Lens” was a CD-R of songs recorded on 4-track by founding members Bill Baird, Matt Oliver, and Bill’s younger brother Michael, before the band existed. 6-piece lineup (Bill Baird, Michael Baird, Jordan Johns, Sam Sanford, Matt Oliver, Gabe Pearlman) solidified January 2003. Several tours ensued. In 2004, to ease the pain of not having any recordings, we constructed a studio in a record-pressing plant. More touring. Write and write and write. Our full-length album out in 2006.

Tell us anything.
We have a website.

Sound Team also play Mercury Lounge while they’re in town. Unfortunately it’s September 13th at 9:00 which means they probably won’t make it to BMJ over at Tonic. Maybe they’ll come late. All tour dates (currently only Austin and NYC) at their site.

Ask them more questions in the comments. Hopefully they’ll answer.
