Who will be "The Next Arcade Fire?"

THE ARCADE FIRE
The Arcade Fire

"It's that time again! Today, every stripe of music industry hanger-on (including quite a few from this very website) is flocking to New York City for the megatravaganzapalooza known as the CMJ Music Marathon, four days and nights of bands, schmoozing, panels, schmoozing, films, schmoozing and schmoozing. It's simultaneously orgasmic and maddening, with all these bands you want to see all playing at the same time in all five boroughs and New Jersey, and all these secret after-parties in mysterious Brooklyn lofts, and all these publicists buying you free drinks but not shutting up about The Next Arcade Fire." [Pitchfork]

"Being heralded as the next Arcade Fire could be a touch overwhelming, but Stars share more than just a hometown with the Montreal chamber rock phenomenon." [Guardian]

"If you're in NYC i would like to suggest you go see ManMan tonight at Mercury lounge at 10. They're gonna be the next Arcade Fire ... they don't have songs as good as AF, but the show will be one of those things that you'll be stoked you caught. They're like crazy pirates." [Ultragrrrl]

WOLF PARADE
Wolf Parade

"Almost as long as Funeral has been out, we've heard that Wolf Parade are more or less destined to become the next Arcade Fire. A bold statement, and not one that I'm sure I agree with just yet. Which isn't to say that I don't like Wolf Parade. I do. A lot. I've enjoyed all their eps, and their full length debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary, makes good on the promise of those eps and will likely find a place on many best-of-the-year lists. But the next Arcade Fire? That's just... I dunno. Is it simply because they're from Montreal, too? Because the two bands are buddies? The comparison just seems so arbitrary. Regardless, Wolf Parade are well on their way to proving themselves a fantastic band in their own right." [kop e kat]

"The whiff of Pacific Northwest nostalgia more or less ends there, which is great because we wouldn't want anything else to confuse anyone eager to crown Wolf Parade the next Arcade Fire. "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts" owes much more to Bowie-in-Berlin than to any of Wolf Parade's Montreal peers. And the echo chamber vocals on "I'll Believe in Anything" would be enough to bar the group from attending Win Butler's fancy-dress tea parties." [Seattle Weekly]

"Everyone’s stumbling over themselves trying to anoint Wolf Parade the next Arcade Fire... something that should make their upcoming gig – as Arcade Fire’s opening act – interesting. But the Parade – despite being a group of energetic kids from Montreal with an energetic stage act – marches to a totally different drummer." [heartonastick]

* Listen to Wolf Parade at Myspace

"AM: It’s funny. I read something about Wolf Parade that said, “Is this the next Arcade Fire?” So it’s like a rating system now. Now if Wolf Parade becomes as popular as [Arcade Fire], it will be, “Who’s going to be the next Wolf Parade?” And that’s not cool. That has nothing to do with rock ‘n’ roll." [said Antonin Marquis of We are Wolves to Prefix]

* Listen to Wolf Parade's CBC Radio 3 Session

"PS Wolf Parade is the next Arcade Fire." [Bumpershine]

WINTERSLEEP
Wintersleep

"A blog I visit quite regularly had a recent headline: “Wintersleep – the Next Arcade Fire!?!?!?” Wait now --- are we done with Bloc Party and Wolf Parade already? Wow. I (and Scott Herren, Colin Meloy, and Britt Daniel) realize that so far in 2005 it’s been quite easy to get tired of new albums before they’re even released. But please let’s let things develop on their own course, insofar as they might." [Cokemachineglow (who has MP3s)]

CYHSY
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

"A quick Google for this Brooklyn five piece (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) reveals a myriad of views from the gushing to the ‘don’t believe the hype’ doubters. That so many people are proffering an opinion on something that was self produced and limited initially to only 2000 copies says much about their impact. Now in a second pressing it promises to be the next Arcade Fire, a band propelled first by word of mouth and then by frenzied A&R." [soundxsp]

wolf parades "ill believe in anything" is a better song than anything arcade fire have written.

I like too think that if the Arcade Fire are good as most of think they won't be easily replaced by one of these other bands. But the unfortunate part of "indie rock" is people don't really care about the music they just care if they are the first one to discover the next big thing.

Oh my! What if the Arcade Fire's next album isn't the 'next Arcade Fire'?

We'll have to wear hats on our feet and hamburgers will eat people!

Via Violenta are the next _______

Were the Arcade Fire the next Strokes or someone else? I can't remember who they replaced. Based on the amount of Hype that CYHSY have received, I'd say they're the best bet.

Posted by Jason | September 22, 2005 5:10 PM

i'll go along with jason, CYHSY, just based on the noise they have generated without even a record deal... it's either them, or david bowie.

I'm def on the "dont believe the hype" for CYHSY team, they were L-A-M-E at the show in Cleveland. i love the rec, but they didnt have "it" live at all. arcade fire does. my best guess is there isnt a "next arcade fire" at all

you can read my CYHSY review here.

Arcade Fire? I'm still waiting for the next Nirvana!

Posted by Glenn | September 22, 2005 5:57 PM

^^^^ ME TOO!

Posted by danfun | September 22, 2005 6:03 PM

"i love the rec, but they didnt have "it" live at all. arcade fire does." - This was my exact impression of the band when I saw them at Southpaw, which was the only time I have seen them live.

Nirvana? I'M STILL WAITING FOR THE NEXT SILVERCHAIR!!!

Posted by puremassacre | September 22, 2005 7:13 PM

im still waiting for the next marvin gaye to be honest..

but this years arcade fire is definately cyhsy, and if it aint them its wolf parade.. just wait for cyhsy to blow up.. "skin of my yellow country teeth" was on in an irish bar in philly last night.. it was one of the bartenders cds.. but still the fact that it was played is rather interesting

The next arcade fire, the next massive band from montreal will be Priestess. fucking fantastic. songs. rock. songs.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2005 10:23 PM

if i had to bet money, i'd say the next big montreal band will be either shoot the moon (dresden dolls-like cabaret-pop) or heroes & villains (interpol-meets-strokes). neither is as good as wolf parade, though...

American Princes, their next album is groundbreaking. Hopefully it will come out soon!

Posted by hopalong | September 23, 2005 3:04 AM

pink is the new arcade fire

Posted by ryan97ou | September 23, 2005 10:10 AM

I'm waiting for the next Roger Daltrey.

Oh, and Tamar-kali should be the next Grace Jones.

What does "the next Arcade Fire" mean anyway?

The next indie band to get jocked by Bowie and Byrne ?

Yawn, who cares? This kind of thinking ruins happy homes. Love the one you're with!

Posted by Camille | September 23, 2005 11:20 AM

remember when bowie and byrne jocked the electroclash scene. what will the jock next? mastadon and pelican?

Posted by mika | September 23, 2005 11:33 AM

Those that proclaim any band (CYHSY, Wolf Parade or others) "this year's Arcade Fire" totally miss the fucking point. The great thing about the scene in Montreal (and in other cities in the world like Glasgow where there's not a lot of media and bands trying to make it big like here in NYC but more of an actual "scene") these days is that every band sounds different. Stars, Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire, et al. all sound different from each other and that's a good thing.

When you all succumb to the "this year's Arcade Fire" mentality, you all just regurgitate the typical hype from the industry that's looking for the next big thing and not giving a damn about the actual music. It's kinda sad actually.

Posted by incarag | September 23, 2005 12:23 PM

I saw the stars and I think they are good but at least at the brooklyn show they were pretty crappy sounding.... I'd say the next arcade fire will be a band that is actually unusually talented like the arcade fire is...

wierd how that works!

Posted by dov bowie | September 24, 2005 4:16 AM

I'm waiting for the next Smoosh, myself.

you should shoot the moon.

who is the next elton john?

Posted by elton john | September 29, 2005 4:34 PM

clap your hands, lake trout, wolf parade, or the elephants are my picks. Why should we take down arcade fire already? they are great.

Posted by Nate dewey | September 29, 2005 6:26 PM

Gasp! I was about to put down American Princes. GO AR.
