Depeche Mode @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics

Depeche Mode @ Bowery Ballroom

It was incredible. Depeche Mode put out a new album and decided to tour arenas across America (including two nights at Madison Square Garden in NYC). Then they announce that they're kicking things off with a warm-up gig at the 550-capacity Bowery Ballroom in NYC (October 28, 2005). I got my (very real) ticket at J&R Music World with the purchase of the new CD. Someone said J&R gave out about 100. I don't know where the other 450 came from, but the place was PACKED with Depeche Mode fans. It's rare to see a show in Bowery Ballroom where people are screaming their love for the band on stage, and it was definitely the first time I saw people holding up "I love you" signs in the audience.

Depeche Mode @ Bowery Ballroom

The sound was amazing. The band brought their own sound system with them. There were huge speaker stacks on the floor on both sides of the stage. The entire stage-right side of the room was shut off with a mesh wall. Some sort of crew sat behind it. There were extra security guards. I got there right before the 9:00 PM starting time. The street outside was mobbed with people hoping to get in. Many of them got their wish about 50 minutes into the 90 minute show. People were dancing. There was lots of dancing.

Depeche Mode @ Bowery Ballroom

Though I don't love the new stuff on CD, it was all fun live. It goes without saying that "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" were the major highlights of the evening. The songs Martin Gore sang felt really good too.

SETLIST via Melody Nelson and Productshop

Intro / A Pain That I'm Used To / John The Revelator / A Question Of Time / Policy Of Truth / Precious / Walking In My Shoes / Suffer Well / Damaged People / Home / I Want It All / The Sinner In Me / I Feel You / Behind The Wheel / World In My Eyes / Personal Jesus
Encore: Enjoy The Silence

AOAMLL got some pics of Dave Gahan arriving at the Bowery. Carlos D (Interpol) was spotted in the crowd.

Lady Kier @ Opaline, NYC | pics

Lady Miss Kier @ Opaline

"So she wasn't spinning 'Groove Is in the Heart.' The club kids attending the We Care a Lot party on an early-summer Friday at Luke & Leroy's found her deck work deee-liteful anyway. Fifteen years after World Clique, LADY MISS KIER is back on the scene, this time as a DJ with a globe-trotting schedule. Having kicked her body- and career-wasting smack habit, the Lady is literally and figuratively larger than ever." [The Village Voice awarded Kier 'Best Low Key Comeback']

Lady Miss Kier @ Opaline

What the Voice forgot to mention, was that Kier's low key comeback is not just DJing. After giving up on Motherf*cker Friday night (Oct 28, 2005), I ended up at (the no longer in the East Village) Opaline (previously Shelter - 20 W. 39th St) where I caught a surprise (surprise to me at least) 2-song performance by Lady Miss Kier (and two backup dancers). One of the songs I heard at Wigstock. The other one I hadn't heard. So awesome.

The NYPD Shut Down the Roxy | Motherfucker Moved

THOMAS ORONATO & MICHAEL T
Thomas Oronato & Michael T

It was a Halloween disaster of sorts. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of costumed hipsters were left homeless for a time last night when the NYPD shut down the Roxy. The Motherfucker crew was forced to move the party last minute to the much smaller, but more conveniently located, Delancey bar on the Lower East Side. Luckily I got a phone call before making the trek above 14th Street.

HALLOWEEN 2005
Halloween Mofo

"...Arrival early at the Roxy only to find couple of people in front, a police car with the flashlights, and some legal papers taped to the closed club. Roxy's just been closed by the cops as per legal order from a judge. I ask the cop about it, it tells me the place went bankrupt, other people suggest the Roxy lost it liquor licence. 'The Roxy's closed indefinitly', 'the Roxy's court date for reopening is Thursday, ... who knows. The only sure thing is that Motherfucker will not happen at Roxy. As people arrive, the word spread the party's been relocated to Delancey Lounge in the L.E.S. ... " [Queens, Freaks, and a Thumping Bass: Justine in New York]

I didn't go to the Delancey, but Bronques did. More of his photos at Last Night's Party.

A Guide to Animal Collective | Feels

I spent the last week learning why everyone loves the new Animal Collective album.

FEELS
Animal Collective - Feels

"Feels is a near-stunning album a notable amount of the time; by focusing their instincts, Animal Collective has become freer than the freest folk, twice as wild as apes, and saturated with taste and invention that trump both." [Stylus gave Feels an A-]

"Some have unimaginatively characterized AC as freak-folkers." [The Village Voice likes it too]

"With each new album it becomes clearer that Animal Collective will not stay still." [Pitchfork gave Feels a 9.0]

"Feels is a psychedelic wonderland filled with life-affirming warmth." [Tiny Mix Tapes says 4.5/5]

Vashti Bunyan | Just Another Diamond Day | Lookaftering

THE ABRIDGED STORY
Vashti BunyanVashti Bunyan

Vashti Bunyan made an album that no one liked 35 years ago. Distraught, she quit music and led a normal life. Then came the Internet. She Googled herself. She found fans like Devendra Banhart. She decided to re-release the record. This time people liked it. Indie-Folk embraced her. She appeared on Devendra Banhart and Piano Magic albums, Golden Apples of the Sun, and an Animal Collective EP. On October 25, 2005, she released her first new album in 35 years. Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and others play instruments on it. Everyone likes it too.

MORE STORY
Vashti Bunyan

"Devendra wrote to me a while back and sent me some of his songs and drawings and asked if I thought he should carry on. I was immediately and utterly captivated by his style and invention and nomadic spirit, and so wrote back to say yes, please keep going. Then later on he sent me the 'Rejoicing In The Hands' track. I added my voice to it and was so pleased to hear it on his album. In turn he has been my songs' most loyal advocate and I'll love him forever." [An interview @ foxy digitalis]

"It is a tale full of romance, adventure, tragedy, redemption and unlikely twists" [A story in Guardian]

"I'd love to tour. I feel it's something I never did back then and I have some dues to pay. I'm starting with one show in London in December. I'll see how it goes and hopefully then think about more. And more. If I'm lucky- and just now I feel like the luckiest person I could be." [An interview @ Pitchfork]

"On this show, your host Garrison Reid sits down with Vashti Bunyan. Vashti discusses returning to writing music, recording Lookaftering, and her thoughts looking back at Just Another Diamond Day." [Download & Listen @ Indie Interviews]

JUST ANOTHER DIAMOND DAY
Vashti Bunyan

"One of the happiest by-products of the ongoing underground freak-folk explosion is the reemergence of British singer Vashti Bunyan" [Pitchfork gives it a 9.0]

"To recap: Vashti = boring, Devandra = ought to do Herbal Essences commercials, and Joanna = as cuddly and loveable as a puppy" [Cokemachineglow, not a fan]

Get Just Another Diamond Day @ Amazon

PROSPECT HUMMER W/ ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
Vashti Bunyan

"...she hooked up with Animal Collective while they were in London last year to sing lead on three new songs, which, combined with a sound collage by the Geologist, make up this short EP." [Pitchfork gave it an 8.4]

"The members of Animal Collective apparently balk at the idea that they’re part of a modern American folk scene, but the folk leanings on this record are undeniable." [Prefix says 4/5]

"Animal Collective's new four-song EP then is a great disappointment, as it is far too restrained to be the monumental step forward that the band is primed to take." [Popmatters says just average]

Get Prospect Hummer @ Insound

LOOKAFTERING
Vashti Bunyan

"...with the release of her second album Lookaftering, Bunyan has completed a comeback more reminiscent of pre-war country blues artists like Dock Boggs or Bukka White, whose performing and recording careers were resurrected during the 1960s folk revival, rather than anyone from the pop/rock era." [Pitchfork gave it an 8.5]

"Like all works of elusive beauty, Lookaftering is something that is so immediate and accessible it will take time to realize just how enriched with subtle evocation it is." [Tiny Mix Tapes gave it a 5/5]

"Bunyan's collaborations with younger peers feel very natural, her voice melting into Joanna Newsom's harp figures on 'Against the Sky' and 'If I Were'. 'Wayward, one of the disc's most beautiful songs, pulls in a whole Golden Apple's worth of contributors, with a mid-song meltdown of instruments, including Devendra Banhart's acoustic guitar, Kevin Barker and Otto Hauser's electrics, Adem's autoharp and Max Richter's piano and Hammond." Depeche Mode Video, Fake Tickets, & Stuff

DEPECHE MODE & COPS @ TOWER RECORDS, NYC | 10/18/05
Depeche Mode @ Tower Records

Depeche Mode claim the tickets on eBay for tonight's Bowery Ballroom show are fake: "There are no physical tickets for the event. There is only a guest list with the winner's names. You must have a photo ID, and your name on this list, to get in. It is not possible to buy a ticket to this event. Beware of sellers on eBay who are saying you can buy a ticket, because it is not possible."

What's more annoying? Someone selling tickets for $400 a piece, or a band lying about fake tickets? (I know they're real. They look just like mine - RSVP info. included).

Brooklyn Music Terminal Closed | Show Scandal

Brooklyn Music TerminalIt was only four months ago that I reported the reopening of L'Amour as Brooklyn Music Terminal. Then I read on Brooklyn Rocks that they, "wanted to see Brides of Destruction and Adema at Brooklyn Music Terminal on Friday and just found out the place was closed."

It looks like the Friday September 23rd Genitorturers/Combchrist show was a fiasco. A member of Terrofact wrote, "There were quite a few people there for Combichrist, more so than for Genitorturers at this point so we told everyone to get their money back, which apparently the venue refused to do." Eisdrive confirmed, "They told people at the door that EISDRIVE never showed up!"

Then according to DJ Maniak, there was no club by Saturday night. "I just spoke to a friend of mine (she's fairly active in the metal scene), And she told me her friend's band was supposed to play there last night (Saturday), and when they showed up, furniture was being hauled out of the club"

That was a month ago. Since then bands have been posting cancellations and apologies all over the place. Does anyone know what actually happened?

For movie fans, look for homages to Roman Polanski's 'Repulsion' and the bathroom scene from Francis Ford Copolla's 'The Conversation'. Sorry, my movie nerdness showing. Excellent job by director Micah Meisner." [Watch it at Between Thought & Expression]

JON BRION
Jon Brion @ Canal Room

Jon Brion came to NYC (from LA) to record something for a Les Paul tribute album. While here, he booked three shows at the Canal Room. I caught the first one (Oct 25, 2005). Unfortunately the show started an hour late (I think the will call list was numerical instead of alphabetical), and it ended rather quickly due to the impending late show. Actually it didn't end THAT quickly, but compared to the 3.5 hour set (jammed with covers) the late show got, I guess I feel a little jipped... :( ...just kidding (we got Rhett Miller...they didn't). It was magnificent. I'll say no more because heartonastick nails it. Another good review at Life Goes Off.

After this show I actually had a ticket to the Jon Brion late show and one to Wolf Parade at Northsix. I know I missed an awesome late show, but at least I was able to sell the ticket AND didn't have to eat my Wolf Parade ticket (and Wolf Parade was good), AND I got to sleep before the late show even ended.

Goblin Cock | Bagged and Boarded | MP3 & Video

Goblin Cock Goblin Cock (Rob Crow from Pinback's side project) finally released their debut LP, Bagged and Boarded, on Absolutely Kosher records. I haven't heard the album yet, but there's an MP3 and video posted on their website.

"Latest hard hitting album for the prolific Rob Crow (Pinback, Team Sleep, Thingy, Heavy Vegetable). From the caustic, bubbling froth emerges Goblin Cock, monstrous in its potency, grotesque, fully formed, vile and virile in its power. Goblin Cock's debut Bagged and Boarded is the best rock record in years. This is not a side project. This is not ironic. Rob Crow is serious." [Buy it at Insound]

"...Turns out the Josh Homme reference applies to more than just naming tendencies. Crow has a Homme-like proclivity for genre melding songwriting and peculiar melodies and vocalizations. Although the similarity is more in spirit than in sound, Queens of the Stone Age comparisons can be made to several tracks...." [MetalReview]

Les Sans Culottes' legal battle | Nous Non Plus

Les Sans Cullotes "...We notified Ferrand via e-mail (or sent him to the e-uillotine, if you will) that we would be continuing as Les Sans Culottes sans him. Days later, Ferrand sent us a cease-and-desist letter claiming we were in violation of his self-proclaimed 'de facto' trademark (at the time, nobody had officially registered the trademark; although, once ousted, Ferrand did submit the application). Despite the letter, we played a packed show at New York's Lower East Side club Sin-é. We thought Ferrand might show up and cause trouble, so, as a joke (mostly) Céline Dijon arrived on stage wearing handcuffs and a Kevlar bulletproof vest. The gig was violence-free, and we reveled in our newfound liberation......So, in the true spirit of France, we surrendered. We turned over the band name and Web site to Ferrand. We kept our faux French identities (Jean-Luc Retard, Céline Dijon, Cal D'Hommage, Maurice Chevrolet, and Harry Covert) and formed a new band, … Nous Non Plus, meaning 'us no more' or 'neither do we.' We recently completed our first album with songs about love and lawn care and played a sold-out New York show...." [Slate]

TMT gave Rehearsing My Choir a perfect score

"The Fiery Furnaces have taken the medium of music and turned it on its ear. The band is able to score the soundtrack to everyday life, thus breathing life into the music itself. Every single song evolves into a chapter or a short film with its very own plot, dialogue, climax, and illogical conclusion. Listening to a Fiery Furnaces album is akin to reading Richard Brautigan, Edgar Lee Masters, or Sherwood Anderson. However, these separate apexes combine to form one surprisingly cohesive tale." Wolf Parade @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics

Wolf Parade @ Bowery Ballroom

I've been listening to Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary pretty obsessively since their CMJ show. They sealed the deal last night at Bowery Ballroom (October 24, 2005). Yeah, maybe they started off a little slow, but that was all forgotten well before they played No More Dinner Bells to finish off their 2-song encore.

Wolf Parade @ Bowery Ballroom

I loved the 2-3 new songs too- can't wait for the next album. Yeti & Prefix say the crowd was weak. It's true their wasn't much dancing, but I thought it was actually one of the rowdiest Bowery Ballroom crowds I've seen in a while. Maybe that was just because of the two or three hecklers. They kept yelling for Modern World and Grounds for Divorce. Another guy kept reminding them they were in NYC. Bowery Ballroom crowds just don't move very much.

Wolf Parade @ Bowery Ballroom

"The live set was a bit more timid, this time, like they had less to prove and no urge to impress. They came out flat – but then, they did last time, too; the boys in the Parade might think about doing a couple laps before a show, if this is a recurring problem. It seemed odd that, about halfway through their hour-long show, the best stuff we’d heard was the new stuff: They played three new songs, and clearly enjoyed sinking their teeth into those." [Heartonastick]

They never did play Grouns for Divorce. Bumpershine listed that as one of the resons he didn't like the show. Unlike Bumpershine, Jay Loose Record thought the show was great, but listed his top 5 things he didn't like anyway. Central Village liked it too, has more pics.

"The rumors proved true and Madonna showed up for a promotional appearance at the MisShapes party at Luke and Leroy in NYC West Village, and I was there for the apperance, thanks to Trent at Pink is the New Blog for the heads up on this one. She showed up 12 people deep in three vehicles wearing an amazing around the neck blue dress. The club is very small and more of a hipster hangout than the big clubs in the Meatpacking district. Because of this they don't have backdoors or secret entrances. She walked right in through the front door. As soon as she came in the crowd went crazy. She went up to the DJ booth and said a little hello and then introduced her single. Pretended to a little DJing and the hung out while the at least 20 minute remix version of Hung Up played in the background!...." [You Know Music]

8 Bit Musicians Jailed for Hanging Flyers

Nullsleep & Bit ShifterNullsleep & Bit Shifter

"While putting up flyers for the International Chiptune Resistance show at The Tank this coming Saturday, Nullsleep and Bit Shifter were approached by two plainclothes police officers, arrested, handcuffed, informed that 'a cleaner New York is a safer New York,' and taken to the NYPD 9th Precinct police station for processing and a nice stay in the NYPD's luxurious high-security accommodations. Stripped of belts and shoelaces (to prevent suicide by hanging), the police missed Bit Shifter's camera/web-phone, allowing exploitation of some irresistible photo-op moments, as well as a unique opportunity to set Bit Shifter's AIM away message to 'I'm in jail.'" 'I don't want it to sound anything like the White Stripes,' says Jack White of his newest project, the Raconteurs. 'This is a full-on band -- dual songwriters coming together, building off one another, bouncing off each other.' [Rolling Stone]

Devendra Banhart @ Webster Hall, NYC | pics (part 1)

Devendra Banhart @ Webster Hall

The Devendra Banhart show last night at Webster Hall (October 20, 2005) was a who's who of "freak-folk." The Hairy Fairy band includes members of Espers, Currituck Co, and Vetiver. Special guests on stage included Tarantula A.D., Cocorosie, Bunnybrains, and Devendra-regulars like Will. Antony was name checked.

Devendra Banhart @ Webster Hall

I'm a huge fan of artist collaboration, especially with Devendra. Unfortunately I think he's taken the recreation of the 60's thing too far - not because I can't dig it, but because the stage show is ruining what we're there for in the first place: the music. I didn't feel any of the magic last night.

Devendra Banhart @ Webster Hall

This doesn't mean I'm giving up on Devendra. Maybe he needs some rest. Maybe the sound wasn't that good at Webster Hall. Maybe the band drank too much magic punch. Maybe I was really tired (I was). The recent CMJ show at Bowery was actually pretty tight.

Devendra Banhart @ Webster Hall

Stay tuned for more pictures that better capture the craziness. Bunnybrains & Tarantula AD opened.

UPDATE: danfun felt what I did

Nomi, Armen Ra, & High Priest @ Rothko, NYC | pics

Nomi blew me (and all the Sunset Park kids) away Saturday night at Rothko in Manhattan (October 15, 2005). Not only did she perform her hip-hop soul with a full band, there was the magic of Armin Ra's theramin, the skillful scratching by DJ High Priest, AND A PORTISHEAD COVER (theremin included).

Nomi @ Rothko

Nomi posted this letter on her website: "We want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate the release of Nomi's debut album 'Lost In Lust' this weekend @ Rothko. There was such a beautiful crowd.

In the words of DJ High Priest who blessed us with a brilliant set, "...it reminded me of back in the days when tough rappers would be chillin downtown with the art kids and new kinds of music and art was born."

Also gracing us with their presence was Joan As Police Woman who's solo set made the evening that much more special. Kornares kicked off the evening with rhymes and beats straight from Nomi's hometown Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Nomi performed with a full band that included Joe Pascarell on guitar (The Machine), Jason Di Matea on bass (Chocolate Genius/Reuben Bachart) Todd Cohen on drums (The Machine/Antony & the Johnsons) and the haunting Armen Ra on theramin. Nomi performed 2 new songs during her set and we've posted video of these performances in our Media section."

Nomi @ Rothko

* Antony, a few of the Johnsons, CocoRosie, and Jason Hart were in the Rothko audience.
* Nomi sang Antony's part in "Beautiful Boyz" with CocoRosie a day earlier at Tonic and before that at Town Hall. Antony & The Johnsons played Carnegie Hall two days earlier.
* You can listen to clips of Nomi's new album at her website, but unfortunately the CD doesn't capture the magic of her live show (which you can watch videos of at her website too). Tiny Mix Tapes gave Lost in Lust a 3/5.

Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson playing Canal Park Friday

"The new Canal Park at the west end of Canal St. might be a tiny sliver of green in the concrete madness that is the West Side Highway, but that doesn’t mean it’s undeserving of a hearty welcome. The new park will be dedicated on Fri., Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. to the tune of Lou Reed, the illustrious front man from Velvet Underground turned solo singer. Reed and his wife, Laurie Anderson, are members of the Canal Park Conservancy, which will help fund the maintenance of the triangular oasis. The free concert starts at 7:30 p.m." [Downtownexpress]

Islands played Pop Montreal | MP3s & Stuff

ISLANDS @ ACADEMY CLUB, MONTREAL | OCT 1, 2005
Islands

Islands, feauturing ex-Unicorns, played twice during the 2005 Pop Montreal festival. They opened for Beck, and they headlined their own Saturday night showcase at Academy Club. I went to the Academy Club show, but I had to drive back to NYC the next morning so I left before they went on (2 AM I think) (I saw openers Alan Astor & Holy Fuck though).

"Islands mixed folk with indie rock. 7 musicians were giving all they had, despite the overwhelming heat. Subtitle and Busdriver did a tag team collabo during one of their songs. The quick flow and rapid tempo worked really well. It was the highlight of the night and put a grin on my face." ['insert clever name' was at the Academy show]

* There's no date in his post, so I'm not clear which of the two shows You Ain't No Picasso posted as MP3s for download.
* Said the Gramophone (who posted a studio MP3) said Islands was the best show he saw at Pop Montreal (also not sure which one he was at).
* Jim Guthrie played with Islands.

Jose Gonzalez signs to Mute NA | Get his CD

"Jose Gonzelez’ Veneer, which finally got a Stateside release via Hidden Agenda/Parasol, is a standout singer-songwriter album in a genre that always has an oversupply of good artists. It was announced last week that Gonzalez has signed with Mute North America. Gonzalez packed NYC’s The Living Room last night and had the hushed crowd applauding with vigor after each song. His cover of Massive Attack’s 'Teardrop' was especially moving." [Coolfer]

Jose Gonzalez @ Living Room

José González was absolutely amazing last night at The Living Room in NYC (October 18, 2005). He played after Emm Gryner and before Mike Wexler (and Doveman) at the CMJ-sponsored show. The over-capacity crowd was clearly there to see him. Emm was lucky to get the large earlybird audience. Wexler was not as lucky. Not only did he have to follow an extremely talented musician, 90% of the crowd left after Gonzalez. I didn't, though admittedly it was hard to think anything sounded good after hearing Jose sing and play guitar. He played at least two covers to close the pre-encore set: a Kylie Minogue song and Massive Attack's Teardrop. The encore was two more songs.

Jose Gonzalez @ Living Room

Jose is a superstar in his home country of Sweden. Those who didn't know it already, probably figured it out after seeing the small mob of Nordic women surrounding him after the show. Jose gave out lots of autographs. If he's promoted properly in the U.S., I think we'll see him playing Radio City in no time.

Elliott Smith Unreleased MP3s

"While many of these songs were most likely recorded before the 'Basement' era, the leak includes a variety of unreleased songs (& one live song 'Another Standard Folk Song'). The key songs to download are 'Abused' (with lyrics), Riot Coming, High Times, New Disaster, The Worst Part is Almost Over, & Untitled (being called 'Sticks & Stones' by the fans). These were previously unavailable and were most likely some of later songs that Elliott worked on. Some of the songs sound like the same versions seen from the Either/Or Demos, but others are better sounding (especially 'Going Nowhere')." (via Catchdubs)

Franz Ferdinand Live Reviews

FRANZ FERDINAND IN LA | OCTOBER 8, 2005
Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand played the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in NYC last night.

"They started with 'Jacqueline' and ended with 'This Fire.' In between, they played…a lot of stuff. Even from my view, from which I could make our the band’s general movement on toothpick legs, I was blown away. The sound is a bit funky in the MSG theater but it didn’t kill my eardrums. Being closer would’ve been great but I, someone who rarely shows any inkling of dancing ability, kind of danced. Kind of. The first time I saw FF, I wasn’t a fan; afterwards, with the realization, “Holy shit, they made me feel like dancing,” I was won over." [The Oh So Quiet Show]

José González | MP3s| 1st U.S. Show (tonight)

Jose Gonzalez

José González is the most exciting reason to show up at the $7.00 Living Room show tonight. It's the Swedish singer-songwriter's U.S. debut (not counting the Soundfix Records instore he played on Sunday). I've been listening to his CD non-stop for the past few days. You can listen to four songs at Myspace.

"Impeccable classical guitar work sets the rhythm for González' intimate, hushed vocals. He'd fit right in with the current neu-folk folks as well as the regrettably departed parties of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith." [Download an MP3 @ 3hive]

Jason Collett @ Pop Montreal

The Most Serene Republic, New Buffalo, Apostle of Hustle, and Jason Collett played the Arts & Crafts Showcase at Main Hall in Montreal for the Pop Montreal festival on Friday September 30, 2005. It was a pretty small venue, and they weren't letting anyone else in when I got there. I could hear New Buffalo playing from the hallway/stairwell.

Jason Collett @ Pop Montreal

Determined to get in, I hung out next door at Green Room (another Pop Montreal venue) for the next two hours. By 12:30 enough people had cleared out of Main Hall. Andrew Whiteman (Apostle of Hustle) was covering a Metric song when I entered. It was Apostle's last song, but he did come back on stage later to join Jason Collett and band for a few songs. I've seen Jason perform a solo song or two at BSS shows, but wasn't sure what to expect from his own band. They were really, really good.

I was hoping there'd be some Emily Haines action on stage with Jason, but that didn't happen. At Jason's recent Commodore show, Feist came on stage to sing Emily's part in Hangover Days. Vanmega's got a review of that show and an mp3

Jimmy Scott (w/ Antony) @ Carnegie Hall, NYC | pics

"Jimmy Scott’s musical career has spanned not only decades, but also styles. During the 1940s he performed as a regular on the vaudeville circuit, while the 1950s and ‘60s saw him recording vocals for jazz greats like Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles and Charlie Parker. Today, his career resurgence includes collaborations with rock artists like Lou Reed and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Scott’s fragile vibrato and unique use of timing and phrasing have influenced singers from Billie Holiday to Madonna, and his heartfelt delivery in songs such as 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' resonate with his own life experiences of tragedy and loss." [ Watch and listen to Jimmy Scott @ PBS]

Antony introduced Jimmy Scott 1/3 into his own set by saying something like, "when they told me I would be playing Carnegie Hall, I wondered what people there would want to hear, and I thought Jimmy Scott." When he reintroduced him 2/3 into his own set, he called Jimmy, "the reason we were born." I think Antony would agree that the 3-4 songs Jimmy played from a chair in front of the piano were the highlight of the already awesome evening. Eighty year old Scott's voice filled Carnegie Hall in a way I didn't think was possible. He got two standing ovations, and flowers personally delivered by Antony after he played his last song.

Antony & The Johnsons @ Carnegie Hall, NYC | pics

These photos are from the Antony & The Johnsons show @ Carnegie Hall in NYC (Oct 13, 2005).

Antony split his set with the legendary Jimmy Scott who came out twice to sing his own songs. Lou Reed joined Antony on stage for the encore. Rufus Wainwright didn't play with Antony, but he was in the audience. David Bowie, Bette Midler, Kate Winslett, Laurie Anderson, Lily Taylor, Richard Gere, Michael Pitt, Joey Arias, Hattie Hatthaway, Dave Deporis, and Jason Hart were also spotted.

Though the most serious of all Antony shows, he snuck some humor in. "The show was wonderful, with a hilarious but also genuinely sorrowful version of Whitney Houston's 'I Want to Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' (which the singer remade as a love letter to Shania Twain)..." [Loose Strife]

"The next big name on the new-folk scene is a deeply engaging singer-songwriter free of affectations... with the most gorgeously sandy-textured voice we've heard in ages" Time Out NY

--

Back to CMJ. I had some time between Walking Concert at Sin-e and Wolf Parade at Bowery Ballroom. I decided to stay at Sin-e a little longer.

MIKE WEXLER @ SIN-E FOR CMJ | SEPT 17, 2005
Mike Wexler

The next band was supposed to be Tomorrow's Friend. Their description emphasized their many members, but only two guys were setting up on stage. I figured it was probably Mike Wexler who was listed later on the bill, but I decided to ask one of his friends to make sure. The friend confirmed it was Mike, rolled his eyes, and looked away. Ouch. I guess Tomorrow's Friend cancelled.

Mike started to soundcheck. He didn't like how the lights looked, and he let the sound/light guy know it until everything was just right. Mike came off as an asshole, as did his friend. With a bad taste left in my mouth before he even started, I couldn't enjoy the show. I snapped the above photo and left after a few songs.

When I later sat down to find out more about Wexler, I was disappointed to learn that he's been compared to M. Ward, and his recorded music actually sounds pretty good. Now I have to give him the benefit of the doubt, and check him out again. Maybe it was me. Maybe he was in an especially bad mood.

Mike Wexler "One of the most hyped releases to come out this year is Mike Wexler’s debut EP. But it was a different kind of hype than what music lovers are used to. It wasn’t the overwhelming press machine of a Pitchfork or a major indie or corporate record label, it was more of an honest word of mouth hype about what everyone knew was going to be a great record from an amazing artist, no matter if it sold 2 or 200,000 copies. Wexler has the voice, minus the lisp, of Tom Rapp of the late 60s psych-folk band Pearls Before Swine." [Uncommon Folk]

"Mike Wexler sings with the gruff voice of a tired throat. But gently, almost soothingly-the way your eighty-year-old longtime cigarette-smoking grandmother can comfort you between her hacking coughs. Without the hacking coughs. And with intricate, pretty, yet interestingly varied guitar work that ranges from bluesy to folksy." [The Deli Interviewed Wexler]

American Analog Set Quits Touring

"Though the band will stay together, their busy schedules outside AmAnSet will prevent them from doing cross-country tours. Explaining the decision, Kenny wrote: 'Sean's book comes out in early 2006. Kenny is working on songs for a new project and also putting songs together for the next AmAnSet singles/unreleased compilation. I'm not sure how this up beat group got on the same bill as Antony & The Johnsons, but people who got to Carnegie Hall early enough were dancing in their seats for McCollough Sons of Thunder's inspirational (or so they think) opening set (Oct 13, 2005). It was hard to feel them from a seat at Carnegie Hall. It was easier when standing in the rain at Summerstage.

Philip Glass & Le Tigre love Atlas Café

Atlas Café is one of my favorite vegan-friendly restaurants in NYC. Philip Glass and Le Tigre like it too.

"Composer PHILIP GLASS revealed to me that his favorite movie theater is 'whatever is closest to my house' and his most favored restaurants are the similarly convenient Cremcaffe (65 Second Avenue), Atlas Café (73 Second Avenue), and Madras Café (79 Second Avenue). I guess he's the prisoner of Second Avenue." [Michael Musto]

"I’m a vegetarian! I love Gobo on 6th Avenue, Anjelika Kitchen on 12th Street, and Sanctuary on 2nd Avenue. And you can get great vegan desserts at Atlas Café on 2nd Avenue." [Le Tigre’s Johanna Fateman]

FF' Rehearsing My Choir | Reports from Toronto

The Fiery Furnaces play Town Hall in NYC tomorrow night (October 14, 2005). I was wondering what the tour with the same title as their controversial new album would be like. The Toronto bloggers give us a preview.

"I didn't find appealing the half-hour long portion of the set dedicated to tracks from the new album. More often than not there were only hints at melody, odd time signatures and half-spoken/half-sung lyrics which all added up to a period of challenging listening." [For the Records]

"Even the Rehearsing My Choir material was a lot more enjoyable without their grandmother singing the material. The crowd seemed to dig the new stuff but then they were hearing Eleanor sing it... we'll see how they like the actual album when it comes out later this month." [Chromewaves]

Any chance grandma might show up at Town Hall?

The Fiery Furnaces | Rehearsing My Choir

Fiery Furnaces "The new Fiery Furnaces album had its release date pushed back several times and endured several name changes before it ultimately became Rehearsing My Choir. I’m still not sure I understand this brother and sister duo’s way of thinking, but the album (once entitled Garfield El, which happens to be a track on the album) is here, and brings with it a new addition to the band’s lineup. The concept album is based loosely on the life of this new bandmate. Grandmother, Olga Sarantos, lends her voice, talents, and rich background to the album." [Get the MP3 at Media Vulture]

Get another MP3 on Insound's download page.

Miss Modern Age called this album "an unlistenable piece of recorded performance art." The Furnaces' biggest fan agreed in her comments. Solace hates it too.

At the risk of being called "an a**hole" by Miss Modernage, I'll say I like what I've heard so far. It's not party music, but it seems to work really well in my headphones. If I drove to work, it would probably be good in the car - like a book on tape. It's probably really good on drugs...or really scary. (note: I haven't listened to the whole thing yet)

Stream the whole album at Amazon (or so they claim, I can't get it to work)

"Bowery Presents" In The Spotlight

Bowery Presents
Sonic Youth @ Webster Hall

People have been talking about the upcoming non-ClearChannel "Bowery Presents" LCD Soundsystem show at The Nokia Theater. "Bowery Presents" has been strictly Webster Hall until now.

Last night and tonight the Bowery Presents The New Pornographers with Neko Case at Webster Hall.

NEKO CASE @ WEBSTER HALL | OCT 12, 2005 (photo by Kathryn Yu)
The New Pornographers @ Webster Hall

Kathryn pointed out this blurb from the newly redesigned Bowery Presents website: "We began in August of 2004 by bringing Sonic Youth to Webster Hall. As an independent promoter, we will continue to bring your favorite bands to larger venues in the New York metropolitan area, such as Webster Hall, Nokia Theatre, Town Hall, Beacon Theater and many more to come, and make sure of the quality of your experience."

ARCADE FIRE @ WEBSTER HALL | FEB 1, 2005 (as seen here)
Arcade Fire @ Webster Hall

Last year the NY Press wrote a good article about Webster Hall & Bowery Presents: "My worries were recently calmed by the unlikeliest source: the Bowery Presents, a new promotion company formed by the people who run Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. I'm hesitant to praise either of these downtown music clubs—notoriously elusive, often unfriendly, always unhelpful—but it's possible that Bowery Presents may actually undermine the citywide control that Clear Channel seeks."

TURBONEGRO @ WEBSTER HALL (couresy of SPIN)
Turbonegro @ Webster Hall

Webster Hall was only 50-75% full for the Turbonegro show. That makes it awesome because there's tons of room to move around.

If my hadn't lost my pictures, they might look something like SPIN's. (SPIN, don't get mad at me for using one)

Astro Zombie wrote this review of the show and the club:

"These homos know how to rock.

I saw them play last night at Webster Hall, which I think is actually one of the best venues in the city. Webster Hall is a strange place, really. Its popular with the Bridge and Tunnel Trash crowd on the weekends, which is especially odd considering that the whole place has a creepy, Addams Family feel to it. The ballroom is a somewhat separate area, and while its not a particularly large stage, it has a great balcony and a bleacher area to the left of the stage. The walls are decorated with faux-art deco artwork, but it manages to give the feeling of an older theater that's been gracefully brought into modern times..." [Atomic Zombie]

"@#$@#$@#%#@$@#@@!"

That was my reaction when I got home from the Turbonegro / Early Man show @ Webster Hall last night (Oct 11, 2005) and my computer claimed my camera's memory card was blank (again). Long story short, my photos are gone forever. #@$#@#@! See above photo and know why it sucks even more than, for instance, if I lost pictures of the Shins.

A few of the Turbonegro songs were fun, but mostly their schtick seemed old. They called the Strokes whores, and dedicated Sell Your Body to the night (click to download MP3) to them.

Early Man

Though I missed at least half their set, I liked Early Man. I don't listen to a lot of new metal, so I'm not really qualified to say how they compare to what's currently out there. Regardless, they sounded good, and Matador thought they were good enough to sign. They're a new metal band, but they aren't "new metal." Coolfer called them neo-metal. I'd compare them to Black Sabbath and early Metallica. Oh My Rockness say they slay.

NY Press Dumps Mr. Wiggles

MR WIGGLES, THE ANTI-VEGAN
Mr. Wiggles

This sucks. I looked forward to reading Neil Swaab's sick and twisted cartoon each week.

"Long story short, the new editors have decided that after five years in the paper, my popular comic strip, Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles, didn't fit into their vision of the paper. So they fired me. Over e-mail. Wouldn't even bother to do it over the phone or in person which is kind of crappy to do to someone who's helped define the paper for the past five years. Anyway, that about sums it up." [Neil Swaab in an interview with the Apiary]

Arctic Monkeys | Hype? | Stream Their Songs

"The news compound predictions that the Arctic Monkeys are set to be the biggest British band since Oasis." [Gigwise]

The Arctic Monkeys

It's not easy to find officially released material by the latest UK hype band. Luckily Scenestars was nice enough to compile thirteen Arctic Monkeys songs into a stream (hint: click on Rachel's head to pop the radio player)

---

"Apparently (according to the NME who should always be trusted), the band are 'making bloggers cream themselves.' Hmm. I can't remember doing that, but perhaps metaphorically..." [Work or Duty]

THE NME TOP 10 (Oct 2)
1. Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'
2. Bloc Party - 'Two More Years'
3. We Are Scientists - 'The Great Escape'
4. Maximo Park - 'Apply Some Pressure'
5. Editors - 'Bullets'
6. The Rakes - '22 Grand Job'
7. Franz Ferdinand - 'Do You Want To'
8. Littl'ans featuring Pete Doherty - 'Their Way'
9. Nine Black Alps - 'Just Friends'
10. Test Icicles - 'Circle Square Triangle'

---

I swear I chose the above photo before I saw Sixeyes' Arctic Monkeys Video Post. The song is the NME chart topping I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor. I swear I didn't know Pitchfork reviewed it today either.

For some more hype, check out Prefix's appropriately entitled post: "Arctic Monkeys Hype"

Cat Power | new Album & MP3 | The Greatest

"Pitchfork has details on Cat Power's new album, The Greatest. Matador one-ups them with the album art, the correct release date (January 24th, not the 26th), a promise of a full-band world tour to commence in early '06 (with crying and on-stage meltdowns to follow) and an MP3 of the title track." Non-BSS Arts & Crafts Albums | 666.8 Pitchfork Conspiracy

Arts & Crafts put out three albums this year by artists who are not affiliated with Broken Social Scene. Pitchfork gave all three releases a 6.8

----

The Most Serene Republic

1) The Most Serene Republic's Underwater Cinematography [Buy it at Insound]

"As the first non-BSS-associated signing to their Arts & Crafts label, the Most Serene Republic are an appealing, wide-eyed anti-hand-me-down sextet that may not have any concrete physical bloodlines to their crafty Canadian neighbors, but-- with their sweeping, climactic pop tendencies-- could easily sneak into a BSS family reunion and steal some BBQ'd prime ribs with few questions asked." [Pitchfork gives them a 6.8]

ALTERNATIVE REVIEWS: Junkmedia hates it | Splendid loves it

A STORY: I saw this band for the first time last week opening for Metric.

DOWNLOAD TMSR
Content Was Always My Favorite Color (MP3 via SPIN band of the day)

----

American Analog Set

2) American Analog Set's Set Free [Buy it at Insound]

"Newcomers should head to From Our Living Room to Yours or Know By Heart to hear the AmAnSet at its best. As for fans, Set Free is ultimately just another American Analog Set album-- and probably the least essential at that." [Pitchfork gives them a 6.8

ALTERNATIVE REVIEWS: PopMatters likes it less | Prefix likes it lots

A STORY: I passed on the opportunity to catch their recent show at Joe's Pub in favor of seeing Doveman for the first time at Mercury Lounge with Silent League, King of France and Pelican Picnic. Part of my reasoning was the shows they have coming up at Mercury Lounge and Southpaw.

New Buffalo

3) New Buffalo's The Last Beautiful Day [Buy it at Insound]

"When I heard New Buffalo was signed to Arts & Crafts, I sharpened my repertoire of trusty Canadian jokes, drooling at the opportunity to once again tackle the Great Indie Wilderness Up North with my razor wit. But alas, it was all for naught, as it turns out New Buffalo hails from another British Commonwealth, the one that used to be a prison island." [Pitchfork gives them a 6.8]

ALTERNATIVE REVIEWS: Cokemachineglow loves it | Splendid loves it too

A STORY: I haven't seen New Buffalo live yet, but I did hear a few live songs from the hallway outside the sold-out Arts & Crafts showcase at Pop Montreal (I eventually got in).

I thought of some 6.8 conspiracy theories (including one that linked these reviews , BSS, and Pitchfork to Satan), but on paper they started to seem dumb. If you have some, add them to the comments.

(thx to whoever it was that pointed out the 6.8 thing in the Arts & Crafts message board)

Musicians who Blog (part 2)

I compiled a list of musicians who blog once. BeatnikPad has a much larger list. (via the oh so quiet show)

I clicked a few. Here's what I learned:

"Here we are in Knoxville, TN. Nice people abound. While getting coffee I inquired as to where a certain part of town was and a cute boy actually escorted me all the way there." [Sleater Kinney]

"Yes, Satanism just strikes me as... silly, I'm afraid." [Momus]

"Me and Stevie crawled out to the ballgame today. It was kinda religious. We went out there to salute a god on the mound, Pedro Martinez. He was pitching for the Mets. He pitched a no hitter till the seventh, when unfortunately I said to Stevie." [Belle & Sebastian]

NYC venues like Webster Hall | Stereogum Married

Webster Hall

As usual, the comments of a post mentioning Webster Hall turned into a debate on the merits of the venue. Central Village recently posted that he thinks Webster Hall improved lately. I can't say I disagree, though at times it can feel a little overcrowded and hot.

Matt at Ear Farm posted his "Top 10 NYC live music venues." Webster Hall is #10, Bowery Ballroom is #1, and there's eight more in between.

Scott Stereogum got married this past weekend in a Long Island venue. Congratulations to he and his wife.

Sigur Ros Stick it to Las Vegas Hard Rock

Sigur Ros played Las Vegas on October 6, 2005.

"sigur rós and the toothfaeries, the creators of their merchandise, are fed up with the extortionate fees they are required to pay to concert venues for selling their t-shirts to fans at the american shows. half of the profit of all merchandise sold at tonight’s show at ‘the joint’ in the hard rock hotel, las vegas, goes to the venue and new taxes. sigur rós have decided to protest against these ridiculous fees by selling their t-shirts for $1 each at tonight’s show in las vegas, leaving the venue with about 50 cents per tshirt." Econo Culture | A Cloud Cult Interview from Tonic

Econo Culture is a new online music magazine. One of their first features is an interview with Cloud Cult that went down live at BMJ.

Do you guys like playing in New York? Do you like New York?

Dan: It’s a big city. Like, overwhelming a bit. We think Minneapolis is big, and you get here, and Minneapolis seems tiny. I think it’s exciting, though. I had never been in New York until June when we first played here. And it’s cool to actually see it. Also, it’s hard to get attention anywhere, but especially here, and it’s really nice to get it here, and maybe it means more than in, like, Gary, Indiana or something. I don’t know. What do you think?

Craig Minowa: Yeah, it’s a mystical kind of city. You see it in the movies all the time. And to come here and have people know you and bob their head when you’re playing and know lyrics and stuff is nuts. Insane. It’s pretty mellow where we come from, and everybody in the band is just overstimulated here – like, “wow, there’s all this noise, and lights everywhere.” It’s beautiful.

The whole interview at Econo Culture.

Lenny Kaye | You Call it Madness | Mo Pitkens

lenny Kaye "Musician Lenny Kaye is perhaps best known as Patti Smith's guitarist. But he's also a music writer, whose work has appeared in Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and Creem. His new book, You Call it Madness: The Sensuous Song of the Croon, chronicles the male singers of the 1930s known for their suave, sophisticated and romantic interpretations of song: Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee and Russ Columbo." [Listen at NPR]

"On Thursday evening, Oct. 20, at Mo Pitkins club, 34 Avenue A in New York City, in a rare solo acoustic/electric appearance, Lenny Kaye will sing original songs, read and croon from his acclaimed book on the intimate and romantic pop stylists of the 1930s, YOU CALL IT MADNESS, and celebrate the many musical traditions that have found their home on the lower east side." Little Steven says Don't Give up on CBGB | MEANY FEST

The Save CBGB rally in Washington Square Park was over 40 days ago already (exactly how long they've been operating without a lease). Except for the mildly interesting M.E.A.N.Y Fest shows that are happening there this week, and recent gigs by Helmet and Ric Ocasek, things are pretty much back to completely boring (normal). Little Steven reminds us that there's still a fight going on...

"'As that great protest singer Yogi Berra once sang, 'CBGB ain't over till it's over,'' Little Steven Van Zandt writes in an editorial that appears in the Oct. 15 issue of Billboard, which is on newsstands today (Oct. 7).

Stressing that the club remains operational with nightly shows, the E Street Band guitarist-turned-actor, radio host and garage music flag-bearer is asking the music industry's artists and executives to join the fight with their influence and money." [Billboard]

Robert Christgau on CBGB & New Orleans & History

"From the moment the eviction threats started, the notion that CBGB should be preserved in amber tripped my nostalgia alarm, which is tuned so fine it goes off after two notes by Solomon Burke. But I love CB's as I've never loved any other joint, and didn't look forward to pointing out in print, as Pareles did, that it hadn't broken a significant act in decades—or adding, as Pareles didn't, that even if CBGB could sidestep rent inflation in its once scuzzy 'hood, the young bohos who make bands go could not. Once the focus of a geographical scene, it can never be more than the symbol of a sensibility." [Village Voice]

David Byrne turns Factory into Instrument

David Byrne's Factory

"The Talking Heads founder has turned a disused paint factory by the Stockholm waterside into a giant musical instrument, constructed around an old wooden pump organ with its entrails ripped out and replaced with wires and pipes." [Billboard]

"On the morning of the day of the opening I arrive on Jan's borrowed bike in time to see maybe a hundred people drinking coffee in the café and waiting on the stairs for the doors to open at noon. 'How am I going to get a nice clean installation picture with all these people here?' I think to myself. I forget this as soon as I see people begin to play the thing. They're totally enraptured, entranced." [David Byrne]
