Metric vs. The New Yorker

Glass Ceiling

At last night's Metric show, Emily Haines seemed a bit upset by Sasha Frere Jones' recent writeup in the New Yorker. In fact, she mentioned him by name and kept asking the crowd if there's a 'glass ceiling.'

Sasha wrote, "Metric was born late. This Toronto-based guitar band could have found itself a bona-fide mainstream career in the mid-nineties, when brainy female-fronted guitar bands like the Breeders got their fifteen minutes on MTV and an outside chance at platinum sales. Now, along with a hundred other artists with birth dates earlier than 1990 and no rapping in their songs, Metric is unlikely to get much play on MTV—or any other TV, for that matter......They play next week at the Bowery Ballroom and Southpaw." United States of Electronica (tonight) | Yes or No?

United States of Electronica "Seriously, I wouldn’t hype this band if they weren’t capable of DEMOLISHING your standards of a live show." [Yeti Don't Dance]

"An S Club 7 for twentysomething Americans, Seattle’s U.S.E. (short for United State of Electronica) make high-energy dance-pop from grungy guitars and filter-house vocoders. Unabashed, unironic—they’re occasionally unstomachable too. Diehards disagree; the Fluxblog guy once said to me on a message board, 'They could totally beat your favorite band in an energy-off.' Well OK! With Candy Whales." [Nick Sylvester for the VV] (thx J)

"USE is easily one of the top 5 live acts I've ever seen. Going to see Sufjan Snoozans instead of them would be insane. USE will bring the joy." Everyone needs to see them and have their mind BLOWN. [Fluxblog]

"United States of Electronica are amaaaazing..." [conanphile's livejournal]

"Here are some blurry camera photos of The Rakes brilliant performance at Cinespace. In order to actually see them, one had to wait through one of the worst bands with one of the worst names in the world, The United States of Electronica (I'd link to them, but I'd rather not encourage them any further). The Rakes did redeem the night wonderfully." [Untouched by Work or Duty]

Bob Mould played a show | playing Northsix | No Husker Du

The comments section of the Metric post has spawned some discussion about the October 5th Bob Mould show at Irving Plaza in NYC...

"The Du, said Bob in some recent interviews on this tour, will not be reuniting. Judging from the attitude Grant displayed at his recent Mercury show, he's not too interested in burying the hatchet either.

Bob's show at Irving was incredible. New songs sounded great, and the classics were, well, classic." [Coolfer in Metric Post]

Tickets are on sale for Bob Mould @ Northsix in Brooklyn on December 3rd.

The Rapture played Crash Mansion

Aziz Ansari was there. He told me, "they did killing, jealous loves, out of the races, sister savior and then all new stuff, which was pretty good."

Jeff Central Village (who will post an official Gothamist review later) said, "they were fun, it was short - 45 minutes, venue sucked, but I liked the new songs."

DJ Steve Aoki @ Fader Lounge, NYC | CMJ | pics

DJ Steve Aoki @ FAder Lounge

You might know DJ Steve Aoki (AKA Kid Millionaire) as the owner of Dim Mak Records, as the brother of supermodel Devon Aoki, or even as the son of the guy who owns the chain of Benihana restaurants. If you ever read the Cobra Snake, you might just know him as "that guy" who's in so many pictures.

If you were in NYC for CMJ this year, you probably know him as the DJ who played the most shows ever. You get bonus points if you actively attended CMJ events without bumping into him at least once. These few photos are from the Fader Lounge on Orchard street - the afternoon of CMJ Day 4 (Sept 17, 2005).

CocoRosie @ La Tulipe | Pop Montreal | pics

CocoRosie @ La Tulipe

CocoRosie was the first group I saw play at Pop Montreal this year (Sept 29, 2005). They opened for Antony & The Johnsons to a capacity crowd at Montreal's La Tulipe. I've seen them a bunch of times. This was the best one. No CocoRosie show ever seems to have the same linuep. They're always pulling in special guests and friends. This one was limited to the Cassidy sisters and one other (rapping/beatboxing) person (top pic, right). Antony didn't join them on stage for Beautiful Boys, though they did later join him on stage.

CocoRosie @ La Tulipe

Sometimes you need to get away for a better perspective.
a) The crowd was going nuts for them. (not everyone's a hater)
b) Montreal crowds generally go more nuts. (not everyone's a New Yorker)
c) CocoRosie were confident & appreciative (NYprobably makes them nervous)

The Decemberists & Whale @ Webster Hall, NYC | pics

The Decemberists @ Webster Hall

The Decemberists played Webster Hall in NYC last night (Oct 5, 2005). It was their second night in a row at the same venue, and the third time they played Webster Hall since the club started having "Bowery Presents" indie rock shows around a year ago.

The Decemberists @ Webster Hall

They've upgraded the Mariner's Revenge whale act where the crowd screams as they're swallowed by the whale.

The Decemberists @ Webster Hall

Other Highlights
* They played a cover of E.L.O.'s Mr. Blue Sky
* They closed with I Was Meant For The Stage
* I heard that Colin crowd surfed the first night
* I heard they got the whole crowd to sit (like they did at Warsaw) the first night

Fluxblog loves Fiona, screwed by Daily News

"10.0, *****, A+, two thumbs waaaaaaaaaaaaaay up. I don't care what your rating system is, I just know that whatever it is, the officially released version of Extraordinary Machine is the one record that I've heard this year that deserves the top ranking, and believe you me, I've heard a LOT of music in 2005. Many will romanticize the original Jon Brion production, but I maintain that the Mike Elizondo versions are uniformly superior...." [Download an MP3 at Fluxblog]

On a related Fluxblog note... if you looked at Vinyl Mine after I posted that blurb from the Daily News, you probably noticed that the News accidentally cited Vinyl Mine instead of Fluxblog. Did they fix it? NO.

* Death of a Party attended the Brakes show at Pianos.
* Jason One Louder was at Brakes too.

StarTime International Records (home of Tom Vek, Brendan Benson, The Joggers, Dios Malos, etc...) is hosting a weekly (I think) party at 169 Bar. It's $3.00 for 2 bands, DJs, and an open bar.

"We’ve got two (not one but two!) great, great bands playing. The teenage power pop sensations Surefire! (Yes they really are teenagers.) And the dub-punk assault of Professor Murder. It’s going to be amazing. Great music provided in between sets and afterwards by your local heroes Eucho, Logan, and Lightning."

new Neighborhoodies venue | Brakes

* Brakes are a UK band best known for sharing members with British Sea Power and Electric Soft Parade.
* Neighborhoodies is best known as a seller of clothes.

Brakes If you haven't heard already, Brakes are playing a free instore performance at Neighborhoodies' Brooklyn location (234 Atlantic Ave) @ 5PM today (Oct 4, 2005). It's the store's first instore, and they told me it won't be their last. I believe they can hold like 40 people.

For Brakes, it's one of only three U.S. appearances this time around. The first was last night at Pianos. The third is tonight at Pianos again (8:30 PM).

Listen to Brakes songs and watch videos at their site.

Sufjan Stevens @ Bowery Ballroom (benefit), NYC | pics

Sufjan Stevens @ Bowery Ballroom

Of the zillion Sufjan Stevens shows I've seen since Michigan was released, this acoustic-solo-benefit show at Bowery Ballroom (Oct. 2, 2005) was probably the most special. No band. No costumes. No theatrics. Just Sufjan, a banjo, and a guitar. He opened with a cover of REM's The One I Love. He played a cover of The Innocence Mission's The Lakes of Canada (because Michigan and Canada are best friends). He played John Wayne Gacy and Chicago from Illinois, and a bunch off Seven Swans and Michigan including Seven Swans and an encore of Romulus.

Adam Green @ Bowery Ballroom

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I arrived at the Bowery Ballroom Salvation Army benefit (Oct 3, 2005) too late to see Other Passengers, Grizzly Bear, Akron/Family, and special guest Wooden Wand (no Strokes or Decemberists). I got there in time to see Adam Green though. Though not evident from the pictures, he was playing with a full band.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sign to Wichita

"Sorry kids, but Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are now officially no longer a completely DIY success story. The band's management told Pitchfork today that CYHSY have signed to Wichita Recordings in the UK, home of Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They hope to release the band's self-titled debut album over there in January, with the possibility of a limited-edition single preceding it. No word yet on any US record deals. For now, the boys are sticking with their unique set-up with ADA Distribution, which allows the mammoth distributor to work directly with the band, without any label middleman interference." Interpol @ Webster Hall, NYC | pics

Interpol @ Webster Hall

Interpol played the last show of their tour (and supposedly the last show before their next album) at Webster Hall in NYC last night (Oct 2, 2005) to an extremely enthusiastic crowd. Compared to their last NYC (& area) shows at Across the Narrows, Jones Beach, Hammerstein Ballroom, and Radio City Music Hall, this was a small venue show. (but not as small as the secret show the played at Bowery Ballroom last year).

Celine Dion vs. The Arcade Fire | Pop Montreal

Celine DionArcade Fire

Next year I'll be more prepared. My 2005 Pop Montreal experience was limited to a short stay in Montreal, a few shows, and a lot of sightseeing. The five day festival ran from Wednesday September 28th- Sunday October 2nd. I arrived Thursday evening in time to catch CocoRosie and Antony, and was on my way back to NYC by 11 AM Sunday morning. I've got pics and stuff to post, but in the meantime here's two things I learned in Montreal...

THE ARCADE FIRE ARE HUGE
The Arcade Fire have reached Green-Day-Kanye-West-Kelly-Clarkson status in their hometown of Montreal (and maybe all of Canada). I heard them in a souvenir store in the touristy section called Old Montreal, twice blaring out of car windows, and once on the radio in a cafe. The cafe was tuned in to Montreal's English-speaking top-40 station. Shaggy was guest-hosting the day's countdown.

CELINE DION IS HUGER
Montreal loves French-Canadian Celine Dion. ("The youngest child in an enormous French-Canadian family, Celine Dion grew up performing with her parents and 13 siblings in the family-owned piano bar." [NNDB]) She was actually born in Charlegmane which is right near Montreal. She was married in Montreal too. (You can visit the church). One record store literally devotes half the store to Celine memorabilia. I wish I took a picture of the shrine. There were glass cases full of CD's on display, binders full of magazines, awards, life-size posters, EVERYTHING. Another CD store specialized in heavy metal and classic rock. No Wolf Parade. No Madonna. No Kanye West. There was lots of Danzig and Dylan, and...a large Celine Dion section.

Neither of these artists actually played Pop Montreal.

BV Interviews Other Passengers

Other Passengers

I asked NYC's Other Passengers a few questions about their opening slot at tonight's Sufjan-headlined benefit show, how their lives were affected by Katrina, CMJ, and their upcoming residency at Pianos...

BV: You're playing a Katrina benefit at Bowery Ballroom with Sufjan Stevens, Adam Green, Grizzly Bear, and Akron/Family. Besides being a good deed, it must be a pretty exciting show to be involved with. How did it come about?

OP: Yeah, we are really excited about being part of this bill. Peter DiBari at Fanatic Promotion who organized the show, knew we spent August recording in Louisiana and that we wanted to do anything we could to help out.

BV: Speaking of Katrina, I heard the hurricane personally affected Other Passengers. Can you tell us about that?

OP: We spent the entire month of August recording our first full-length with producer Grant Curry at his studio, Music For Chameleons in Ponchatoula, LA. It's about 25 miles north of New Orleans. We finished about 5 days before Katrina hit but he and his wife were forced to evacuate. We actually established some strong ties with some locals that we met while there and felt apart of the community by the time we left, so we were fairly devastated by the magnitude of the events that followed. Grant had just begun mixing the recordings when he had to take off - all they could take was their pets, a couple of guitars and our masters. He called us up concerned about how Katrina threw off the production schedule...and this while he didn't know if his studio was washed away! We were just glad to hear he was safe. Thank God they were relatively lucky and suffered only minor damage to the studio and even their home in New Orleans. He just recently got power again and he's back to mixing...talk about dedication. Grant and everyone me met down there have been incredible to us. There is definitely a bond between us and the camp down there because of what it represented from both a life and music perspective.

BV: I also heard you were playing CMJ and then not playing CMJ. How did you get selected to play CMJ, and then what happened?

OP: We were accepted despite not having a label to really push for us or put us on their label showcase night. We then had quite a streak of bad luck after finishing the recording, what with Katrina, then Billy our singer getting tonsillitis the week of our CMJ show and Travis our guitarist is in a cast because of still not fully diagnosed infection in his leg. We were extremely excited because of the fact that Brooklyn Lyceum is an incredible venue. It's got more character than most clubs in NYC. But we had to pull out because he Billy was incredibly ill and couldn't even speak let alone sing.

BV: You have an October residency coming up at Pianos. I believe it was a Pianos residency that got people talking about Clap Your Hands Say yeah initially (pre-Pitchfork). How does one end up with one of these residencies?

OP: We had been talking about doing it for a while but we were focused on writing and recording. The timing for October just worked out for everybody. I think going through the recording process the way we got to, just an intense solid month of eating, sleeping and breathing the band has taken us to that proverbial next level. It was a dream realized to be able to work that way without the distractions of day jobs and just New York City in general.

See Other Passengers tonight (Oct. 3, 2005) @ Bowery Ballroom and then every Tuesday night in October at Pianos.

* Gothamist interviewed Other Passengers too.

Stay tuned for MP3s from their new album. In the meantime, download some old ones off their site.
