"some very HOT news off the Howard Stren show this morning, New York City's long running premiere rock radio station, 92.3 KROCK is changing formats and going to TALK radio as of January 3rd!! holy shit! there's been some speculation, but official word came this morning and most KROCK DJ's and staff learned the details from Howard Stern's show today! even K-Rock's biggest names like Julie Slater are going to be laid off." PLEASE DEAR GOD BRING BACK RON & FEZ!!!!!!!!!!!

Krock has sucked for so long now that I'm glad it's being put to rest. I can't believe that with the strength of the NYC music scene, we don't have a decent indie-rock/alternative radio station.

damn, rock is dead, at least on the radio.

hey vegan, did you go to the wolf parade show last night? any photos? the show was good times.

The Internet killed the radio star.

Where, where will I go to be disgusted by nĂ¼-metal? Who gets all that extra payola cash, now?

To be fair, KROCK changed formats a few months ago, moving away from nu-metal and playing more older "classic" rock songs. Not perfect and often made you feel like it was 1995 all over again but much better than the previous few years, when it was unlistenable.

One of my favorite recent Krock moments was during the ticket giveaway madness for Radiohead's Beacon show, how they pretended for a week that they actually liked Radiohead and only played Paranoid Android, Fake Plastic Trees, and Creep a few times a day. Utterly pathetic. And then made fans eat trash, etc. to win tickets. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Where will go now for an instant Stone Temple Pilots or Nirvana fix? yuck....

Wow KROCK gone, it's a sad day.

"PLEASE DEAR GOD BRING BACK RON & FEZ!!!!!!!!!!!"

If your looking for Opie and Anthony OR Ron and Fez they moved to XM Satellite Radio.

Posted by Joe | October 25, 2005 11:33 AM

Yeah, I know, but I want them back on NYC airwaves.

Or maybe Stern should steal R&F from XM. :p

speaking of a radiohead k-rock moment...
one of my favorite "memories" was prob another one of those times where they pretended to dig radiohead. i think prob the only radiohead show that was ever sponsored by k-rock.. in support of "the bends". when they distributed radiohead condoms. edgy.

Posted by v.i.c. | October 25, 2005 12:06 PM

That wasn't the only one. I think Krock has sponsored just about every Radiohead show in NYC since then.

Which makes me wonder if they will continue to leach onto cool buzz shows now that they are no longer a music station.

Aaargh! I am STILL not totally recovered from when 92.3 WDRE (punk/new wave) switched to 92.3 K-Rock. WDRE was my FAVORITE station in the early 90's when I started college.... Oh, well.

Posted by Anne-Marie | October 25, 2005 1:37 PM

Actually, WDRE, which ruled, was 92.7 FM. I think it's some Latino music station now.

I lived for WDRE during the late 80s/early 90s before I went to college.

Radio in NYC sucks ass.

Posted by Qbertplaya | October 25, 2005 3:24 PM

I still have that Radiohead condom... and I also remember that Beacon ticket thing. I'd listen all week in hopes of winning a ticket - and the DJ's were such assholes laughing at you when you'd finally get through. It ended up I had to sleep on the street and get the tickets. F Krock.

And speaking of Ron & Fez and XM, while they'll never be as big or as well known as Ye' Old Stern, Opie & Anthony on XM are hands down the funniest radio show on the air. Stern may be the "pioneer" but these guys are hysterical.

WDRE RIP. They came back on Eastern Long Island last year and it was a shell of its former self. They had one weekend where they played the old promos and all the music was great... for one weekend. It doesn't matter though - once you get XM (or Sirius), you won't go back.

Is that you randall?

Speaking of Sirius, if any subscribers are interested, Vin Scelsa will have John Darnielle (Mountain Goats) on this Sunday night. His show runs from 8-whenever (usually around midnight) - and it's totally free-form - on Sirius Disorder (I think the channel is 24?) John will be talking, playing his music, other's music, etc. etc. Should be pretty cool.

OMG!!! What the hell will we listen to now. The last GREAT WHITE RADIO station will be gone forever, I am really upset by this news and wish there was something I can do. What will we listen to now during our sleepness nights and through our days =( DAM!!!!!!!!!!MOTHER F**KERS!!!!!!!

Posted by Ghsot-Hunter | November 3, 2005 3:20 AM

This is terrible. Just recently when K-rock changed their format they were so good. Though new rock is awful right now, old rock is amazing. I think its awful its my favorite station and it will be ireplacable. At least here in Jersey we have 105.5 which is pretty good. I just can't believe that in new york city we have a terrible rock scene heck Syracuse has better rock then us which is sad.

Posted by Steven | November 5, 2005 12:55 PM

It really is a shame that rap music and latin music is taking over NYC radio. It is hard to believe that in a city with a population of nearly 8 million and another 4 million in the tri-state area that we can not keep one current rock music station. Well what do you expect when children in middle and upper middle class families walk around imitating 50 cent and Jay-Z. I guess it is time for satelite radio.

P.S. Howard Stern will be a smash on satelite but it can't last to long people will get bored in a couple of years part of his appeal is the FCC and his constant battle for free speech!

IT REALLY SUCKS THAT WE ARE LOSING STERN,BUT AT LEAST WE DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE HOWARD WANNA-BE;BOOKER!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2005 1:52 AM

Well now i will have to listen to wbab 102.3 now.

I would always switch back and forth .

They play mostly old stuff with some of the new stuff thrown in.

I listend to roger and jp in the mornings.

this sucks majorly... this happened to me a year ago when i lived in miami and they took away our only alt-rock station and replaced it with a spanglish reggaeton format.. ahh guess ill have to stock up the i-pod i refuse to pay for radio so id rather just not listen

Posted by this sucks | December 22, 2005 2:41 PM

KRock used to be really good in my opinion like two years ago. Before the "New Music Alternative" gimmic, and currently before the "Great Rock. Period." crap. What was good about KRock was that it was the only station that plaed altrernative rock in long island other then say 98.5 The Bone and the defunct Radio 104. I love older rock such as GNR, ACDC and Van Halen but they didn't belong on Krock. I will miss 92.3 but not the most recent craptastic version of it. I liked it when they played Sublime, AIC, Nirvana, NIN, Metallica and such. At least theres still Radio X 104.5

K.rock if finally going off the the air. At least we still have 933WMMR, 94.1wysp and all the other radio stations out there.
K.rock started going down hill way b-4 Howard stern got kicked off. They ruined themselves when they swiched themselves with 104.3 a few years back. GOOD for them!!! Maybe this is the end of an era of bad radio. BRING BACK HEAVY METAL on radio and keep talk radio to 101.5 like it should be!!!

Posted by Matt | January 22, 2006 1:51 PM

K-rock sux now, Howard Stern is gone. K-rock is now like 101.5 - Talk radio and one of the only stations to get real rock-n- roll now is the original station, 933 WMMR or 94.1 WYSP!!!

Posted by Matt | January 29, 2006 11:57 AM

92.3 sucks. now there are NO stations left to listen to

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2006 7:51 PM

I've managed to save up roughly $81628 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

Posted by Courtney Gidts | February 27, 2006 9:35 PM

dude krock had to go. it was in one of the biggest rock scenes in the world and it played f*****g nostril-metal music by young pissed off rednecks or college dropouts.whatever happend to good ol' rock'n'roll on the radio.I dont know where on the spectrum NYFREEAM will be,hopefull on the right side, but krock just had to pass.peace

How many of these fucking top 40 station we need? Come on ! I mean I am so tired of hearing Britney Spears, One Direction and One Direction sucks big time, and ohh god don't start me on with that Justin fucking Beiber. Come on We got more than any other top 40 station. We need to at least have one rock station. Althugh er have 105.5 WDHA and it's good but most of the time there is to much static while I'm listening to them. Q104.3 is okay but there to old for me.But Krock had New Wave Alternative and many other rock music they had they even had played hard rock. We need to get K rock back. We have to many of the top 40 station and the talk free FM is even worse. I rather listen to death metal then just to hear talking.
WE NEED KROCK BACK ON THE AIR WE NEED A ROCK STATION IN NEW YORK GOD AMMIT ! ! !
