The Devendra Banhart show last night at Webster Hall (October 20, 2005) was a who's who of "freak-folk." The Hairy Fairy band includes members of Espers, Currituck Co, and Vetiver. Special guests on stage included Tarantula A.D., Cocorosie, Bunnybrains, and Devendra-regulars like Will. Antony was name checked.

I'm a huge fan of artist collaboration, especially with Devendra. Unfortunately I think he's taken the recreation of the 60's thing too far - not because I can't dig it, but because the stage show is ruining what we're there for in the first place: the music. I didn't feel any of the magic last night.

This doesn't mean I'm giving up on Devendra. Maybe he needs some rest. Maybe the sound wasn't that good at Webster Hall. Maybe the band drank too much magic punch. Maybe I was really tired (I was). The recent CMJ show at Bowery was actually pretty tight.

Stay tuned for more pictures that better capture the craziness. Bunnybrains & Tarantula AD opened.

Hey BV,
It looks like you and I felt the same way about alst nights show. In my review I felt very similar. I love Dev music but last nights show didn't really seem to focus on the music. But they can't all be great shows.

I've only seen this new band once now (only had seen him solo), so it was kind of interesting to me. BUT, as you can see from my review of it, the music was some of the least interesting parts! Good show all around, but the music definitely suffered as a result of the tremendous party on stage.

This was my 4th time seeing DB, and it was probably my 3rd favorite, or tied last with Tonic. Every time is good, but the two shows at Bowery (especially last year) were magical. "Hey Mama Wolf" and "Lazy Butterfly" were beautiful, and he played "fall" for the first time I've seen.

yeah, my girlfriend and i left 5 or 6 songs into the set. it just wasn't 'there' for us. she remarked that each time we see him (maybe six or seven times now) it gets a little less special.
what was that expression... too many cooks spoil the broth? i think that's what's happening here.

this was one the most fun show i've seen in a long time. if you couldn't feel the ecstacy then you're lame.

Don't know what show some of you attended....it was pure dynamite. Sorry if you were expecting a long acoustic set.....The vibe was intense and most of the audience were thrilled....
