FF' Rehearsing My Choir | Reports from Toronto

The Fiery Furnaces play Town Hall in NYC tomorrow night (October 14, 2005). I was wondering what the tour with the same title as their controversial new album would be like. The Toronto bloggers give us a preview.

"I didn't find appealing the half-hour long portion of the set dedicated to tracks from the new album. More often than not there were only hints at melody, odd time signatures and half-spoken/half-sung lyrics which all added up to a period of challenging listening." [For the Records]

"Even the Rehearsing My Choir material was a lot more enjoyable without their grandmother singing the material. The crowd seemed to dig the new stuff but then they were hearing Eleanor sing it... we'll see how they like the actual album when it comes out later this month." [Chromewaves]

Any chance grandma might show up at Town Hall?

I don't think so in regards to Grandma showing up. I think she lives in Chicago, though I could be wrong. I'm still on the fence about the new album myself. I listened to it again yesterday and while it's interesting, I can't say it's all that enjoyable and I'm a huge Fiery Furnaces fan. Regardless, I'll be seeing them in DC on Saturday night, so expect a full report.

being that i just moved to toronto for university and that lees palace is 4 bloocks from my residence, well apartment, yeah its an incredible residence (think nyu property for university of toronto, same thing) i went to the show. let me start by saying eleanor had a cold, and no voice, idk what she'll be like tomarrow for town hall but she sounded flat in toronto to the degree that she couldnt sing, imo the show shouldve been cancelled and rescheduled just off of that. as far as a furnace show goes it definitly wasnt up to par, the new stuff was alright, but the stuff they played that will be on their next record is what really sounded good. anyways for your sake hope eleanor got her voice or ull be just as good selling ur tickets outside town hall before the festivities

Okay, they played the new stuff here in Philly last night, and I had absolutely no problem with it whatsoever. Yeah, it's a more speak-y than sing-y, but the backgrounds for these songs aren't any more or less confusing than any of their other stuff. There's still unpredictable tempo changes and rapid shifts between different themes. But if you've seen them live before, you know that they take even their most calm songs ("Evergreen", for example) and turn them into fast, raucous, punky numbers with killer riffs. Same thing with the new stuff. I don't know whether the new stuff will sound on record anything like it did last night, but the FF's live show is just as enjoyable as ever, new material and all.

Also, Alex Kapranos and Bob Hardy of Franz Ferdinand were in the audience to watch Eleanor. I can't speak for Eleanor's footwear, but I can say that Bob was wearing absolutely the most ludicrous boots I've ever seen...

To Philabuster, I'm guessing some of your comments were in reference to my quoted comment above. It probably wasn't fair of me to impose my pop music tastes towards The Fiery Furnaces. I mentioned in my original review that I was a novice with the FF's music. I guess the FF are a little more quirky than I wanted them to be. At least I now know that their terrificly catchy song "Here Comes The Summer" isn't representative of their music. I still think they're a decent band, but I probably wouldn't listen to them as much as you.

The show was AWESOME. Oh my god, they totally rocked and Eleanor is extremely hot and while she did have a sore throat (she kept spraying something), she sounded great. Town Hall is not a great venue (hard, crowded seats, obnoxious sound system), but it was nice to sit.

This is the first time I've seen a show that made me feel like I understand a band in a real different way. I think the fact that they played Os Mutantes during the break helped, as well as seeing Matt's noodley guitar playing. I listened to Blueberry Boat today and felt like I was hearing it for the first time. . .
