Franz Ferdinand Live Reviews

FRANZ FERDINAND IN LA | OCTOBER 8, 2005
Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand played the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in NYC last night.

"They started with 'Jacqueline' and ended with 'This Fire.' In between, they played…a lot of stuff. Even from my view, from which I could make our the band’s general movement on toothpick legs, I was blown away. The sound is a bit funky in the MSG theater but it didn’t kill my eardrums. Being closer would’ve been great but I, someone who rarely shows any inkling of dancing ability, kind of danced. Kind of. The first time I saw FF, I wasn’t a fan; afterwards, with the realization, “Holy shit, they made me feel like dancing,” I was won over." [The Oh So Quiet Show]

Talk about it in the comments...

the show was great...they sound a lot grittier in person, not as polished as the songs sound on record...the place was bouncing from beggining to end. I was a little disappointed they didnt play eleanor put your boots on... ;(

heard cut copy has been getting good reception from the crowd as well...which makes me happy

Show was AWESOME! Even FF acknowledged that from the second they walked on stage, the crowd started jumping and the stage started shaking along with the crowd. That got them hyped up as well.

Cut Copy was good live, better than I expected but I couldn't get into TV on the Radio. I haven't seen anyone talking about TV either, Just FF and CC.

the show was great...it was my first time at the MSG 'theater' and I really dug the venue. the floor wasn't crowded at all, so we were able to hang back and dance and still get a great view of the band...

was it my imagination, or did they NOT play Tell Her Tonight? whattup?

I liked tv on the radio, but the section I was sitting in did not feel them at all.

I got to the GA section halfway through TVOTR's second song due to a maddening $6.75 beer line. I walked all around the floor trying to find a spot where the tools next to me weren't blathering. Most people were NOT into TVOTR down there. I bought the tickets soley for the TVOTR; I'm bananas for "Desperate Youths..." and had yet to see them live for various reasons - the primary being that for the past year they've only played benefit shows at tiny bars with shitty sound at 1:00 a.m. on a school night.
I thought they sounded as crazy, complex and brilliant as I hoped they would. I was more fascinated then ecstatic. After one of the guys in the band announced FF would be coming out soon, there was a huge roar. Moments later, he said "TV on the Radio" and the crowd was silent, myself included. (I'd finally found a blather-free spot near the stage lip.) He had to repeat his band's name to get a cheer and sounded hurt. It was weird because I would have gladly screamed enthusiastically, but for some reason it didn't register when he first said "TV on the Radio".
Anyway, their set was much shorter than I'd hoped and damn the MSG people to hell for those overpriced beer lines and prompt start times.
That said, FF was much better than I had hoped. After seeing them at Roseland, over time I forgot how sharp they are. That 40' gets me every time.
But please, TVOTR, play a freaking NY headlining show that doesn't result in you going onstage at 1:00 on a weeknight with a crappy sound system!

$6.75? please...that's nothing...

$8 at Webster! BEAT THAT!

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2005 4:06 PM

did anyone else notice that cut copy were not really playing their instruments?

Posted by ff-fan | October 19, 2005 4:14 PM

8 bucks? Damn. I've never bothered trying to buy a beer at Webster. I guess I was getting a bargain.

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2005 4:15 PM

I think they charge $3 for a cup of water too

FF were amazing!! for the most part the crowd was really into it. pretty good venue...the sound was better than average and there really wasnt a bad seat in the house.

the band seemed really pumped playing their new material. i thought walk away, i'm your villain, and outsiders were particularly strong live.

they might be playing somewhere even bigger next time.

Kalefah in the NY Times wrote another worthless article on this show.

Posted by dirt | October 19, 2005 4:47 PM

If you thought Kalefah's article was worthless (no comment on it as I haven't read it), try reading Dan Aqualante's review of the show in the Post (I just read it online a little while ago). What a douchebag. He really is the worst rock critic ever and it's not just me. Everyone I know that's read his column, including a Republican friend who reads the Post daily, agrees.

Anyway, I was at the show and I thought it was great. I don't agree that the sound was bad there at all (in fact it's quite good for such a big venue), but oddly it was better for TVOTR, though of course FF got a much larger more rapturous crowd response. I thought both bands were very good, though I've also yet to see TVOTR headline (just opening for The Roots and now FF). And no, to the person who asked, they didn't play "Tell Her Tonight", so it wasn't just you. It would've been nice, though. I like when Nick gets behind the mic, though he sings lead on one of their new ones (forgot which one) which they did play.

OK I just read the NYT Kalefah article in question. What's wrong with it, dirt? Why the hatred for Kalefah? Still mad at him about the rockism article?

Posted by incarag | October 19, 2005 5:08 PM

8 bucks for what beers? i alsways choose teh cheapest beers in the house.

Posted by Old Rummy | October 19, 2005 6:01 PM

How did they handle the slower songs off the new record?

Posted by Scott | October 19, 2005 7:48 PM

they really didnt play the slower songs off the new record.

Cut Copy's Drummer was miming to a track. It was like watching an episode of the Monkees...Daft Punk should sue them for copyright infringement.

The show was arright...
Roseland was a finer demonstration of their energy i feel. Also, "Cheating on You" was absent. Ga Floor was stupidly packed with kids who had to take an english 101 exam the next day. thats cool, the show ended really early!

Kalefah never explains the MUSIC and ATMOSPHERE a band emits during a performance. And watch EVERY article will contain a snippet of lyrics; like one really needs to read this in a show review. He/she/it always sees the need to place the act in some sort of classification context, rather than experiencing in the absolute. He/she/it has no passion, no opinion, and little knowledge of the scene of present and of past. Fuck him/her/it!

I was at the Philly show last Friday. Some pics and a review at my site.

bllaaaah. no respect to a band that started solely on making girls dance. lame.

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2005 7:57 PM

empty boring wanker revivalists. and yes, i know rock's a big incestuous self-devouring merry-go-round where everyone sounds like everyone past, present future. and yes i know rock's built on mindless ass-shaking like this. no problem with mindless shakin of the ass. you just better have some soul while doing it. this FF shit just has no soul, no edge, just pretty faces, retread-sound, payola n winks aplenty.
