Sigur Ros played Las Vegas on October 6, 2005.
"sigur rós and the toothfaeries, the creators of their merchandise, are fed up with the extortionate fees they are required to pay to concert venues for selling their t-shirts to fans at the american shows. half of the profit of all merchandise sold at tonight’s show at ‘the joint’ in the hard rock hotel, las vegas, goes to the venue and new taxes. sigur rós have decided to protest against these ridiculous fees by selling their t-shirts for $1 each at tonight’s show in las vegas, leaving the venue with about 50 cents per tshirt." What a joke. They didn't seem to mind the $20 extra ($10 for "handling," $10 for shipping) the company that handled their ticket presale tacked on.

Well I bet they realize there isn't much they can do about the tickets, but at least with the merchandise they have some kind of control over the price. Good for them.

Good statements by both Sigur Ros and Bright Eyes. This is how to make a difference, small battles rather than full-scale wars...

speaking as a tour manager...this is admirable but ultimately pointless. the only thing they are doing is losing money. the hard rock is not going to care as this is just extra free money for the venue. it's not money they are counting on making. so, like i said, the band is only taking money out of their own pocket.
having thought about this before i think a better thing to do, if you wanted to get back at the venue, would be to set something up outside the venue. if you could figure out a way to control the crowd so the cops didn't care you could get around the policy of the club.
again, laudable, but fruitless.
