Sound Team @ Summerstage, NYC | CMJ | pics

Sound Team @ Summerstage

Sound Team had the fortunate and unfortunate luck of playing right before The Arcade Fire (and David Bowie) at the biggest show of CMJ 2005 (Sept 125, 2005). Win Butler personally asked them to play the show. He also watched a lot of it from the side of the stage.

sadly, Sound Team were not quite up to the task. their songs were weak and they need to work on their act. they could stand to lose a member or two (hint: the creepy guy with the moustache.)

Posted by DrJimmy | October 5, 2005 11:34 AM

maybe they could stand to lose a member or two... but NOT the guy with the moustache!

i saw this show, and was majorly unimpressed. then again I left half way through the arcade fire's set, so I guess there is no impressing me since the world seems to think they are the best band in the world.

Posted by k | October 5, 2005 12:01 PM

whoa, you missed the best parts of the show. and, yeah, they're the best band in the world right now. but the world keeps turning.

Posted by DrJimmy | October 5, 2005 12:10 PM

I was way more impressed with the moustache than the band. And even that got old after a song.

Posted by Anonymous | October 5, 2005 2:20 PM

hmm. i actually kind of like their set. the sound wasn't so good though

Posted by deke | October 5, 2005 2:32 PM

SOUND team played a fantastic set. Anyone at the show could have noticed that for him- or herself, and judging from the audience, many did.

Agreeing with Lan D. From my point of view (right in front of the guy with the moustache) they were awesome. One of the keyboardists and the moustache guitarist were really nervous and shaking like crazy during the performance, but I believe they handled themselves well for that kind of venue. I'd go to see them again without a doubt.

Love the Fire, sure, but in response to the expected cast of hatahs, I'd wager heavily to say that ST's show at the Mercury was WAY more interesting than Arcade's histrionics-driven set at Summer Stage. Totally dug SOUND team's Central Park set, too, but the levels were a tad off, if I remember correctly. And never mind the fact that I caught an engrossed Win Butler nodding along from my perch.

Just googled ST, too, and found some MP3's on their site -- www.soundteam.net -- that'll do some hearty debunkin'.

Anyone happen to know anything else about these guys??

Sound Team sucks and NO ONE can persuade me otherwise. But the moustache dude is my best friend because he looked like he did not want to be up there. Who did this band sleep with to make it this far? I need that person's digits in my life!

Bell Orchestre sucked too. I tried to get people to boo them off the stage (the crowd did that to Princess Superstar the time she opened for NERD at Summerstage--I was fiercely proud to be there that day), but NYC hipsters are such shameful spineless wimps.

And I must agree that while I do love The Arcade Fire, it was nost certainly not the love changing ish I thought it was gonna be after reading those Coachella reviews.

SOUND team are from Austin, Texas. They spent a summer building an analog recording studio from an abandoned record-pressing plant. They toured with The Walkmen before getting signed.

interesting, look at this review from this year's austin city limits performance...http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2005-09-30/music_phases5.html

can't say i've heard enough of them, and have read only what they publish on their site, but I bet these guys are gonna be pretty big. they seem to have a rare, artful band ethic and when it comes down to it, a very curious mystique.

i love the walkmen, but they don't have that. and arcade fire's all too exposed.

i'm sorry, but the walkmen and arcade fire don't just ask anybody to open for them.

yes, camille camille, very solid acts on your bill.

Posted by Plimpton | October 5, 2005 4:52 PM

personally, i thought the set sucked except for maybe 1 song. a rumor is that the arcade fire's van broke down in Texas one time, and the sound team came and drove them to their show on time. goes to show how far being nice gets one, imho.

Posted by rich | October 6, 2005 1:41 AM

another rumor is that after playing to a half-capacity crowd at the st. augustine six flags a while back, better than ezra stumbled upon the fountain of youth.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2005 11:57 AM

sound team sucked AND the levels were off at summerstage. they have work to do.

and anyone who slams "hipsters" with blanket criticisms is an idiot (get it? i'm contradicting myself). but Camille's statement is still idiotic.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2005 12:07 PM

wow. bunch of bitter haters here.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2005 5:27 PM

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? If you don't like an opener, there's no reason to boo them. It's just politeness and common courtesy. After all, they're making an effort being on stage and while you don't have to like it, you should at least be respectful and not boo them. And it has nothing to do with NYC hipsters being spineless wimps or other such bullshit.

Posted by incarag | October 7, 2005 5:37 PM

yeah, wtf? boo them off the stage?

camille, you're a fucking moron. and you're involved in the music biz? way to go. i hope everything you touch turns to shit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2005 6:16 PM

yikes we've got an emotional crowd here.
interesting to see that you don't respond well to people who assert what they believe in the light of day.

so sound team can go scott free and i have to become a failure? wondering how you arrived at that equation. i was no more offensive to them then they were to me (at least i liked the guy with the moustache)!

It is only the great men who are truly obscene. If they had not dared to be obscene, they could never have dared to be great. -- Havelock Ellis

I like strong opinions, just not yours (haha). Actually, it just came off as bitter. Like an axe was being grinded right down to a little nub. The world does need strong opinions. The world does not need more people screaming at each other. And just by virtue of being "obscene" doesn't mean you have something of value to say. Quit hiding behind other people's quotes. If you have an opinion, say it once -- straightforward and direct, without bullshit drama.

I think that Sound Team is going to become a very big sensation, i am brother in laws with the two blonde guys and I really think that they are one of the best bands out there right now. And yes the so called rumor about arcade fires band breaking down and them helping is definitely true.

Well, I believe all you bitter haters are simply angry at yourselves...not Sound Team. I saw both Sound Team and the Arcade Fire at the ACL festival and both were some of the best shows Ive seen in my day. I agree with that Will guy above me, I've never met him before...but he knows what he's talking about...So anywho, those of you who bash Sound Team will live to regret it... Zane.

What is the tour schedule looking like for ST? I thought they showed mad potential/gave a pretty great performance at ACL. Hmm, and that's not just me. There were several people enjoying.... Go, Sound Team, Go!

My personal opinion; Sound Team are boring, prima donnas, a whole lotta fuss for nothing new musically. If you wanna f*k them that's your business though. Rock is dead. c-ya in Austin.
