The Decemberists @ Webster Hall

The Decemberists played Webster Hall in NYC last night (Oct 5, 2005). It was their second night in a row at the same venue, and the third time they played Webster Hall since the club started having "Bowery Presents" indie rock shows around a year ago.

They've upgraded the Mariner's Revenge whale act where the crowd screams as they're swallowed by the whale.

Other Highlights
* They played a cover of E.L.O.'s Mr. Blue Sky
* They closed with I Was Meant For The Stage
* I heard that Colin crowd surfed the first night
* I heard they got the whole crowd to sit (like they did at Warsaw) the first night

I was there the first night. They did get the audience to sit, and they did the whale thing. Plus John Wesley Harding came out for a song -- I don't know what the song was, it had to do with Joseph and Mary. Actually Colin and he weren't really in sync for the song but that's OK. Then JWH stayed to play tambourine for a couple of songs.

I was there on Tuesday night. He made everyone sit down and there was one hipster guy who stood there smirking, but he eventually caved in and sat down. Two members came into the crowd with drums and cymbals at one point and started playing in the middle of the audience. Lots of pictures of Sons and Daughters and Decemberists at my flickr:

If anyone is interested, here are two short videos:

31 seconds of Eli the Barrow Boy:

7 seconds of Mariners Revenge Song (sound sucks):

They had a whale when I saw them last month in SF ... but they've definitely upgraded it since then. It looks a lot better than the one they had at that show.

I took video of Mr. Blue Sky and The Chimbley Sweep (during which there was a lightsaber fight, and Colin got everyone to sit down) at the SF show, if you're interested in them.

I meant to add another bullet point to last night's highlights:

* They opened with the Tain

another highlight: twas first time i'd heard "angles and angels" live, and i loved the addition of the "honky-tonk" version of "angel won't you call me?" (which actually just seemed to have the addition of chris funk's pedal steel, but was lovely nonetheless).

also: colin & his beau carson's concurrent birthdays.

also also: i can't believe they were playing webster and not two years ago i saw them at the middle east upstairs playing for 100 nerdy bostonians. their live presence is so much better now - they truly were meant for the stage.
