The New Pornographers played Webster Hall

The New Pornographers played two nights in a row at Webster Hall in NYC (Oct 12-13, 2005). Thanks Jeff for sending me some photos from the second night.

Pretty good show last night, but nothing mind blowing. Was the first time seeing Destoyer and they were fun too. What the hell was up with that Princess Leia get up Kathryn was wearing??? Was kinda fitting actually, since she sort of looks like Natalie Portman from a distance.

Neko was wearing a yellow gown yesterday. I guess it was Kathryn's turn tonight. The first night was better but it was still fun. Hafta wait a full month to see Neko again :(

Neko has an incredible voice and may be the (not undeserved) sex symbol of the band, but Kathryn, tall and willowy with her porcelain features, is a classic beauty. And she has a great voice too.

Good show last night, although I'm disappointed they didn't play "The Jessica Numbers". Webster Hall probably wasn't the greatest venue for the New Pornographers. I think the sound of the seven-member indie power pop supergroup overwhelmed the place a bit.

I'm told the first night was about 25 minutes longer with a Fleetwood Mac cover tossed in. That said, night 2 was still lots of fun, although whoever commented that the venue was not suited to the New Pornos sound was correct. Dan Bejar looked homeless.

Between sets last night, I had an in depth conversation with the gf regarding the economic rationale behind charging $8 for a Corona at a venue as large at Webster Hall, when some smaller venues charge half that. Our theories were quite fascinating. At least the temperature was comfortable last night.

My first time seeing the entire band together (Neko is key to a good performance by all accounts since she adds so much to their harmonies) and I thought it was worth the wait. Yes, Webster pales in comparison to Bowery and there were problems with the sound during the second night I thought the set list was smart, the bands were all on point, and it's interesting watching Bejar try to keep his shit together.

Quick review and nearly three dozen pics up on my site at http://ortgeist.com/2005/10/reviewing-new-pornographers.html

I agree -- $8 beers? And the sound was horrible. Disappointing, since the show clearly had potential for more.

That said - what a talented band. It was my first exposure to their music, and I really enjoyed them.
