Radiohead Remixed | "Me and This Army" Download

"DJ Panzah Zandahz's "Me and This Army" is a collection of 16 Radiohead tracks remixed with snippets of artists such as MF Doom, Jurassic 5, De La Soul, and more. It's as if the white label gods planted sensors inside my brain; they heard my innermost mashup prayers, and answered them here. It's delicious..." [Boing Boing]

The Teenage Prayers | MP3s & Tour

It was Wes who first urged me to check out The Teenage Prayers. The Undisputed Heavyweights (Wes' band) and Underrated Magazine are playing/throwing a show at Pianos in NYC Saturday night (Dec 3rd, 2005). Rachael from Underrated heard their CD and played it for Wes. Long story short, The Teenage Prayers agreed to play the show. (Other bands on the bill are A Brief Smile & Paula Valstein).

The Teenage Prayers

"My first thought after I finished listening to this album from the NYC based band was: why have I not heard of them before? I'd like to think of myself as pretty NYC band savvy, but somehow these guys have fallen through, and I may not be the only one. But not for long. I've listened to this album at least 3 times now and it gets better every time." [Rachel Underrated]

Neutral Milk Hotel "Monroe Street" demos | MP3s

Jeff Mangum "Ok, so a little more than ten years ago; the middle part of 1994 to be more precise, I was in college, and I moved into a house with my friend John. One of his housemates, a guy named Jeff, moved out, and I moved into Jeff's room. Lots of musician types and artists lived in this house over the years, there was an ever rotating cast of characters. I happened to move in just prior to the demise of the Monroe Street House. Parties were had, shows were played, music was made, drinks and "other stuff" consumed, etc. It was, to say the least, a fun time. At one point, John gave me a couple of cassettes that contained quite a lot of demos recorded by Jeff, the guy who'd moved out just as I was moving in...." [Yes, Jeff's last name was Mangum. Shannon posted three MP3s]

Larry Tee king of the world | Nouveau! Tonight

Larry Tee Tricia Romano wrote in this week's Club Crawl that, "Larry Tee is still king of the world, especially the super-fabulous, gay, disco world. He's kept his crown by dishing his crowd just the right mix of edgy techno—Kompakt and Perlon for the know-it-alls—and the hits for the fashionistas."

Nouveau!, the latest party approved by both Last Night's Party and The Cobra Snake, debuts tonight (Nov. 30, 2005) at Fat Baby on the Lower East Side. Larry Tee, Shaun Slaugter, and DJ Jess (Trash) are DJing. No cover.

Preview Beck's Guerolito | Remix Album

"It's the season of the remix album, and Beck is set to release Guerolito, his own remix version of Guero. That album was released earlier this year and eventually went on to gold status. Now Beck has joined with artists like Boards of Canada, Air, John King of the Dust Brothers, Adrock of the Beastie Boys, and Mario C (among others) to remix tracks from Guero and release them as a compilation. Cover artist Marcel Dzama of Royal Art Lodge has even been asked to remix his original artwork for the new release." [Spacelab]

Benevento Russo, RANA, Ween, etc. | Tribeca Rock Finale

As previously reported, Tribeca Rock Club is closing in December. The last few scheduled nights currently posted on their site are Dec 7-10. The 10th is a "private party" and the 8th and 9th list bands I'm not really familiar with. That leaves the mysterious lineup on the 7th: BUSTLE IN YOUR HEDGEROW, DANJABOOTS, COME ON FALCON!

BENEVENTO/RUSSO DUO
Benevento Russo Duo

Further inspection of that lineup reveals that "Bustle in your Hedgerow" is a Led Zeppelin cover band made up of Sir Joe Russo & Marco Benevento (Benevento/Russo Duo), Scott "boom boom" Metzger (RANA), and "Diamond" Dave Dreiwitz (WEEN). Danjaboots is Russo and Metzger "singing country tunes about fightin' and f*ckin'" and Come on Falcon! is Benevento and Russo doing something else. According to Tribeca Rock's description, "Not even we are quite sure what to expect from this one." ADVANCED TICKETS ARE ON SALE

ALSO @ SCENIC: "Marco will be hooking up with Marc Friedman and Andrew Barr from the Slip at Scenic on December 9th and 10th for another round of improv collaborations. Tickets for this very intimate performance are available right here."

AND IF YOU LIKE LED ZEPPELIN COVER BANDS: The all Lesbian Led Zeppelin cover band, Lez Zeppelin, is headlining Bowery Ballroom on January 27th.

Colin Meloy on possibly signing to a Major

Prefix: What’s coming up for you guys?

The Decemberists: Well, I think we’re just going to continue on the course. This record that comes out in March is going to be our last record on Kill Rock Stars, I mean at least contractually. We don’t know what we’re exactly going to do. We’re talking to some labels. We’ll see.

Prefix: Are you necessarily opposed to signing with a major?

The Decemberists: No, as long as we’re able to do everything on our terms. There seems to be a lot of bands of our ilk that are looking at majors or looking to move up to majors. It seems the environment is such you can really tailor your own deal. We won’t make any rash decisions I don’t think.

BV Interviews Undisputed Heavyweights Wes

Some of you probably know Wes. He's a regular commenter on this site. He runs his own blog. He's in a band. He promotes other bands, and when he's not "working," he's out watching & supporting other bands. Since he's got so much going on, I asked if he'd like to do an(other) interview. He agreed.

WES & CASEY
The Undisputed Heavyweights

brooklynvegan: Hey Wes. Readers of my last inverview with you already know you throw free weekly singer-songwriter mashup sessions in NYC. They might not realize that you also make your own music. Your band is called the Undisputed Heavyweights, and your URL (betterthanelvis.com) claims you're better than Elvis. Can you tell us about that?

wes: First of all, we don't claim it as much as we prove it each show. But that's semantics perhaps. The band got it's start a little over a year ago when I met a great singer-songwriter called Casey Shea at an open mic. We chatted for a bit and started writing this song in the back kind of spontaneously. Then this drunk guy started bothering us and he got a little aggressive and we ended up in a full fledged bar-fight with pool cues and beer bottles and everything. Casey got cut pretty badly and I accompanied him to the hospital for his stitches (he was totally fine, just looked bad) and we decided that this kind of first meeting bonding experience was obviously a sign from God to form a band together.

We then also invited our mutual friend and singer-songwriter Jeff Jacobson to join and form the original trinity. We added bass and drums a few months later after a series of acoustic shows when the buzz had driven us to bigger rooms where that kind of sound was necessary.

brooklynvegan: Like for your Pianos residency? How did that go by the way?

wes: The residency went really well. We had a lot of fun, great opening bands, the crowd really seemed to dig and kept getting bigger each week with lots of new faces. We went through about 300 2 song promo discs we did for those 4 shows with Alloy Radio so that was exciting.

brooklynvegan: Who were some of those great opening bands?

wes: Derek James was probably my favorite, Granian was great too, and they didn't open for us but we shared a bill with the lovely Au Revoir Simone one of those nights and they were great. The last Friday we had a great bill with the Twenty Twos (Epic), Jaymay and Cock Lorge

brooklynvegan: Speaking of Jaymay, I realize you and she had a business relationship at one time. I'm referring to "Liberated Matter." Is that your own record label?

wes: We originally started organizing acoustic shows in the East Village and Philadelphia and then expanded our activities to bigger shows, booking, management and releasing a few Jaymay projects. I wouldn't call it a full fledged label at that point, but right now we're working on going in that direction. In the first quarter of 2006 we hope to unveil an exciting roster with small family of 4 to 6 artists we really believe in.

brooklynvegan: Awesome. Keep us posted as it develops, and thanks for talking. Any last words?

wes: Maybe just that I'm very excited about the state of music today and the direction in which I believe it to be moving in the near future. Great stuff is coming to the surface in a wonderfully organic way. Listener and artist driven.

SEE THE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHTS - Saturday night (12/3/05) @ Pianos. Check their tour page for more info.

Jose Gonzalez's band - Junip | Video & MP3s

Junip

Jose Gonzalez has a band called Junip. They have an album called 'Black Refuge.'

Junip "Whereas Gonzalez's solo debut 'Veneer' was a wistful collection of musical gems that eschewed the oft histrionic excesses of romanticism in favour of sleight musical (yet fathom deep emotional) dissertations, 'Black Refuge' sees him embark on a markedly more expansive sound alongside Elias Araya and Tobias Winkerton. Opening through the title track, Junip combine a bluster of organ thrums, thickly rendered percussion and Gonzalez's beautifully placid vocals to produce a sound which is at once spiralling yet very much rooted in the emotional bedrock." The Sharp Things Holiday Spectacular | A Benefit

A letter from the Sharp Things...

----

Ho ho HO!

The date is fast approaching for THE SHARP THINGS HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR, Saturday, December 10 at the BROOKLYN LYCEUM. We really, REALLY want and NEED you to attend this big, BIG show, but we understand you may have questions. So...

Q: Brooklyn? I can't go to Brooklyn!
A: Sure you can. It's easy! The Brooklyn Lyceum is just steps away from the Union Street stop on the R train. Hop on and let the MTA do the rest!

Q: Subway? I can't take the subway!
A: So drive already. The Brooklyn Lyceum is easy to get to by car, just two miles from the Tillary Street exit on the BQE. Here's a map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=227+4th+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11215&iwloc=A&hl=en

Q: Is the show really starting at 6:45? Why so early?
A: THE SHARP THINGS HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR is a family show, for children of all ages. We don't want anyone up past their bedtime -- unless they want to be.

Q: Twenty bucks? That's a fortune. Why so much?
A: THE SHARP THINGS HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR is a benefit for CF CARE, an organization that helps people with Cystic Fibrosis. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated. We want to raise as much as we can without bankrupting our fans.

Q: Gee, I dunno...
A: Come on! The cheap seats at Radio City are $50 -- and we'll have LIVE musicians, thank you. This is not just some lame, 40-minute set. We're talking over TWO HOURS of quality holiday entertainment. And the drinks are cheap. Such a deal!

Q: Are you just playing Christmas songs? I hate Christmas songs!
A: No sweat, Ebenezer. The second half of the show is a full set of Sharp Things originals.

Q: What's with the puppets?
A: We wish we could tell you, but we don't know ourselves. Come and find out with us!

Q: OK, enough already, you sold me! What now?
A: Go here and reserve your tickets:
http://thesharpthings.com/noflash/holiday.html

See you on the 10th!

Rumor | The Decemberists Signing to Capitol Records

THE DECEMBERISTS @ WARSAW IN BROOKLYN (more)
The Decemberists

EARLASH: Cool. So my last question: you talked about how the Decemberists are on an upswing right now and you're getting a lot of attention all of a sudden. Where do you think this is going and where do you want it to go? What's the five-year plan?

COLIN MELOY: I think we want to keep it realistic in keeping it in the indie community. Not to say that the major label industry has ever been that healthy, but it seems to be particularly unhealthy right now and really messed up and not a lot of positive, productive, creative stuff is coming out. And I think the indie community right now is as strong as it's ever been and there's some really, really great stuff coming out. So I'd like to keep moving in that circle. And to continue maintaining our creative freedom. We have an ideal situation at Kill Rocks Stars. They let us do whatever we want. And yeah, just to be able to quit my day job at some point and be able to do music full time. [from an earlash interview - July 2003]

--------

HUSH RECORDS: What is your opinion of the Portland music scene?

COLIN MELOY: I go back and forth on that. I'm really pleased to see how many solid indie labels have taken such a vested interest in a lot of the more marginalized Portland bands right now: The Thermals, Desert City Soundtrack, The Standard, KOLS, The Joggers. Regardless of how disparate their musics, they all deserve what they get. I think a lot of other bands who are sinking themselves into the mire of major label grovel-dom could learn a thing or two from these bands and change their tune. [The rest of that undated interview]

--------

It seems inevitable that The Decemberists will follow in Death Cab For Cutie's footsteps and sign to a major label. Word on the street says they're joining Radiohead, Coldplay, The Magic Numbers, and Morningwood over at Capitol Recods.

The Life Aquatic - Seu Jorge Bowie Covers CD

The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions featuring Seu Jorge I picked up a copy of "The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge" today. If you saw The Life Aquatic, heard the Life Aquatic soundtrack, or read one of my old Seu Jorge posts, you probably already realize that this CD contains acoustic David Bowie cover songs in Portuguese. There are 14 songs to be exact, and I didn't realize until after I bought it that the iTunes version has a bonus track. A few of the songs are on the regular LA soundtrack too.

TRACKS: 1. Rebel Rebel 2. Life on Mars? 3. Starman 4. Ziggy Stardust 5. Lady Stardust 6. Changes 7. Oh! You Pretty Things 8. Rock N' Roll Suicide 9. Suffragette City 10. Five Years 11. Queen Bitch 12. When I Live My Dream 13. Quicksand 14. Team Zissou

J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. renown and his long time friend Dave Sweetapple were interested in forming a hard rock band. They found willing and able conspirators in Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, members New England avant-folk outfit Feathers. On their eponymous debut album, this line-up mounts a mighty sonic tumult that harkens back to classic heavy metal sound of early 70's outfits while still sounding modern in it's assault (and without falling into the ubiquitous "Stoner Rock" pigeonhole). The eponymous debut album from Witch is scheduled for release on Tee Pee Records March 7th, 2006"

Broken Social Scene Drug Bust Update

Dave: The charges have been dismissed, thanks to my lawyer. They didn't want to dismiss. They dismissed the other guy's charges-- the guy who admitted to it-- and it was his deal. I didn't want to be in New York that night, I didn't want to get stoned. I had meetings the next day, I had to play a central park gig at six, I didn't want to party. That's what just pissed me off about the whole thing. [Pitchfork Interviewed Broken Social Scene]

The Cribs from the UK | Tour Dates & MP3s

"Like the Stooges, the Kinks, and Oasis, the Cribs keep it in the family, but they have more work to do if they wish to catch up to their established brethren. Together, this trio of British brothers blazes through three-minute indie rock tunes that lean heavily on the entire spectrum of British punk, inciting goodtime riots with sweat-drenched, blood-splashed live shows." We Are Wolves from Montreal | Tour Dates | MP3

"With their raw, menacing, electro-punk sound, We Are Wolves are as fierce as their namesake. Sure, that other lupine-loving band from Montreal (you know, the one that signed to Sub Pop and has Isaac Brock as the president of its fan club) has been making most of the headlines, but We Are Wolves have been building up steam. More and more, it’s looking like this dark horse could wind up in the winner’s circle when the dust settles." [PREFIX]

We are Wolves

When I was in Montreal for Pop Montreal this year, Montreal's We are Wolves seemed to be all the rage. I thought maybe they would make the list of Canada's hottest bands, but they didn't. I haven't seen them live yet, but that may change soon. They have three NYC shows coming up. Keep reading for the tour dates....

The 33 hottest bands in Canada

EMILY HAINES IS SEXY (not actually related to this post)
Sexy Canadians

In reaction to Information Leafblower's list of top American bands, I Heart Music brings us the 33 hottest bands in Canada. Not fair....

a) Picking bands for a list would of been so much easier had I The Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade and The New Pornographers to choose from.
b) I like the term "hottest" better than "top"

I wonder how similar a list of the 'hottest North American Bands' would be to a list of the 'hottest Canadian bands'. I wonder if any American bands besides Sufjan Stevens would make a list of the hottest bands from anywhere.

I'm glad to see Magneta Lane made the list. I bet Islands gets a better score next year. Where's The Most Serene Republic?

RIP Chris Whitley, Link Wray & Tarus Jackson

Chris Whitley"Singer/songwriter Chris Whitley died Sunday (Nov. 20) at the age of 45 after battling lung cancer. The veteran Texas-reared artist recorded for Columbia, ATO and, most recently, Messenger Records, which released his eleventh album, "Soft Dangerous Shores," in July. A new release, "Reiter In," is due in mid-December on vinyl and will appear on CD sometime next year." [Billboard]

linkwray With "Rumble," the classic 1958 instrumental first improvised at a Virginia sock hop, Link Wray invented the power chord, creating a template for modern rock guitar. Released as a single by Wray & His Ray Men, "Rumble" was gutbucket menace, awash in echo and reverb, built on Wray's slow drags across the strings of alternating major chords, capped by a run of notes up and down the fretboard. It was the big bang of dangerous guitar." [Washington Post]

The Coup "Tarus Jackson, a comrade of the politically motivated hip-hop group The Coup, has been killed in his home. Two armed men forcefully entered Jackson's home on Tuesday morning, demanded money from him, and fatally shot him during a robbery attempt." [Chart Attack]

"Meanwhile, Bowie has become the last rock star to give The Arctic Monkeys his seal of approval, after watching them at a show in New York last week. Bowie explained what he thought of the highly-rated Sheffield quartet in a posting on his official website. He explained: 'Popped in to see The Arctic Monkeys at the Bowery Ballroom Wednesday night. They had some good songs, a great drummer and generally rocked the house. A nice solid Brit band. Personalities sort of reminded me of a young Action (if anyone remembers them).' [Launch]

Alma y Niurka

"Alma and Niurka, two Cuban childhood friends reunited in Miami after many years of being apart each musician having established themselves as true artists on their own. As a duo they became an inseparable force to be reckoned with.....With soaring vocals and twinned shimmering guitars Alma & Niurka conjure the lush melodies, stirring rhythms and rich harmonies of Afro-Cuban culture that are at the heart of their music. The virtuosity and musicality of these two women is dazzling, but it is the unabashed emotional fire, sensuality and passion that Alma & Niurka transmit which makes this duo something rare, and something special...." Prefix talked to the Arctic Monkeys (part 1)

Arctic Monkeys

"...By all reports, the first show was for “industry types”; the second, for “regular folk” (many of whom, incidentally, had similar geographically divulging accents as the four boys from Sheffield – Alex Turner on vocals, Jamie Cook on guitar, Andy Nicholson on bass and Matt Helders on drums)...."

PM: How old are you guys?
Arctic Monkeys: Three of us are nineteen and one is twenty.

....

PM: So that’s not you guys?

Arctic Monkeys: No, no. The other day someone said to us, “I looked at your profile on Myspace.” I said, “I don’t even know what Myspace is.” [When we went number one in England] we were on the news and radio about how Myspace has helped us. But that’s just the perfect example of someone who doesn’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. We actually had no idea what [Myspace] was.

Mos Def left Kweli Tour | No more Black Star

Talib Kweli had this to say...

"As many of you know, Mos Def is taking some time off from the Breed Love Odyssey tour. I do not know what Mos is going through, but whatever it is, it is enough to make him not perform. As someone who loves the stage, he’s got to be having a tough time right now, and I pray that whatever he’s going through will end okay. Dante is my friend, and whatever he needs, we will always have his back.

With that said, I would like to make an apology to the fans who were looking forward to a Black Star show. Dante and I together on stage is a beautiful thing and I am just as disappointed as any fan that it is not happening." (thx Nick)

Avalon & Clear Channel to Create "top rock club"

Limelight

If you were around in the early 90's, you might remember Rock n' Roll Church at Limelight. Every Sunday night, rock fans (and Hell's Angels) took over the club that belonged to Michael Alig, club kids and ravers most other nights of the week. There was always a band, like Pearl Jam who played there on April 12, 1992. The goth Communion party on Tuesday nights had shows too.

Limelight closed amid scandal, reopened as another club, closed again, and reopened again as Avalon. Most people you talk to in the current club scene will tell you that Avalon is not doing too well as a nightclub. Crobar is king in that space, Pacha is opening in December, and of course there's Webster Hall. Avalon is not a venue you think of for live shows either. Occasionaly they have something. Like during CMJ.

Limelight

Anyway, my point is sort-of-just that Avalon/Limelight does have a history of shows. (possibly going back even further than I know). That brings me to my next point. In the very near future you might find yourself traveling to 20th St & 6th Ave for shows once again. In what looks like an attempt by Clear Channel to compete with Bowery Presents & Webster Hall, "Ron Delsener Presents and Avalon of New York City Announce New Partnership"....

----

"Ron Delsener Presents and Avalon of New York City are proud to announce a partnership to present live concerts at this top location for entertainment in New York. The club, located in the existing church space on 20th Street & 6th Ave, a historic landmark building in NYC, will soon be host to more than just the most exciting DJs and electronic acts in the world.

Beginning in January, Ron Delsener Presents will begin to present top names in both contemporary and cutting edge music at the already famous NYC nightclub. This will be the first time in the nightclub's history that it will primarily host touring music acts, yet it will still hold the trend setting parties and club nights it has previously been known for. In preparation to become one of the top rock clubs in the country, the Avalon has undergone both aesthetic and structural changes. The venue will also feature state of the art sound and lighting systems. Chris White, formerly of the program director of CMJ, has joined the team at Ron Delsener Presents as the talent buyer for Avalon." (thx Joey)

Jeff Mangum Surfaces at Elf Power show

ELF POWER
Elf Power

Elephant Six Recording Company artist Elf Power headlined a show at Knitting Factory in NYC last night (November 17, 2005). Andrew emailed to tell me Elf Power played a good show, and this...

"so last night i went to see elf power at the knitting factory. during like the third song jeff mangum comes out to sing the final chorus in his distinctively divine jeff mangum voice. he then exited stage left and that was it. the band did not acknowledge his presence, nor the audience really."

Jeff was last seen at one of Olivia Tremor Control's shows at Bowery Ballroom.

Love is All from Sweden | Tour Dates | Listen

Love is All The song by Love is All on What's Your Rupture MySpace page is great. According to Pitchfork, they have at least one more awesome song.

"The jangly post-punk of Sweden's Love Is All was a favorite of late UK radio personality John Peel and is set to make a serious splash on the US indie scene. The band's stateside debut will be released in December on the New York label What's Your Rupture." [Consulate General of Sweden]

"Long before Natalie Portman, there was the NME, that perseverant UK music weekly, introducing you to the bands that would Change Your Life. Bands by the bushel, each hyperbolically better than the ones before. So what better bastion of unabashed bombast than that classy rag to clue you in to Love Is All, the hottest Swedish export since the last thing everyone likened to Ikea?" [Pitchfork]

11-17 Washington, DC - DC9 *

Tribeca Rock Club Shutting Down | Condos Opening Up

Tribeca Rock Club "In an all-too-familiar tale, the ongoing development of Lower Manhattan is forcing the closing of another of New York City's most beloved venues. After only three short years of purveying live music to the masses, Tribeca Rock Club will be shutting its doors in mid-December. Not long thereafter, the building will be torn down and newly-constructed luxury condos will be erected in its place."

"The club's booking team, Rocks Off, will continue to focus on developing the wildly popular Rocks Off Concert Cruise series, as well as presenting events at the Knitting Factory, BB King's, and elsewhere. Cat Power @ Tribeca Performing Arts Center | Reviews

Cat Power played a free show at Tribeca Performing Arts Center in NYC Monday night. (Nov 14, 2005)

"...I've heard stories of how she (Chan Marshall) occasionally has 'meltdowns' on stage, owing to her incurable stage-fright and insecurity. As it turned out, she played her entire set without anything of the sort, and it was very good. She was just performing solo, and played a lot of songs off the forthcoming album 'The Greatest', in addition to a lot of my favourites, such as 'Good Woman'. Miscellaneous covers rounded out the set, including a lovely medley of 'All I Need to Do Is Dream' and 'Blue Moon', and finishing off with a heart-wrenching version of 'House of the Rising Sun', whose lyrics had been adjusted, clearly in view of the recent tragedy in New Orleans. She segue'd between songs, deliberately, I assume, to prevent people from applauding, which indeed they only did when she switched from guitar to piano or vice versa." [fearful_syzgy]

CAT POWER (NOT IN TRIBECA) | 10/20/05
Cat Power

"I really like Cat Power's name, but, other than that, she proved not to be to my taste. Neilson described her as 'dirgelike' and that just about sums it up. So if you like dirges, seek her out. The Blind Boys of Alabama, however, were amazing..." [Red Peonies]

The Germs & X Reunions, a movie & Juliana Hatfield

DARBY CRASH & THE GERMS

Darby Crash "In 1976 Darby Crash met Pat Smear (later of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters) and they formed Sophistifuck and the Revlon Spam Queens. They then changed it to The Germs. The Germs became a huge Los Angeles punk band, known for their chaotic live shows. Crash broke up the Germs (who once included future Go-Go's member Belinda Carlisle) and committed suicide with an intentional heroin overdose in 1980, the day John Lennon was killed. His legacy has carried on past the release of The Germs (MIA): The Complete Anthology, in 1993 thought to be the prototype for Hardcore Punk." [Wikipedia]

SHANE WEST AS DARBY CRASH (the movie)

"But interest in the Germs has never died -- after all, dying young is always good for an irreverent legend. Brendan Mullen's Crash biography, "Lexicon Devil" was published in 2002, and now a biopic entitled "What We Do Is Secret" is in post-production, set for the filmfest circuit next year.

And here's where the story gets even weirder. With all this interest, the surviving members are set to take the stage again. Filling the mohawk of the dearly departed Darby? Shane West. " [The Plain Dealer]

SHANE WEST AS DARBY CRASH (real life)

The Germs

"For the first time in my punk rock life I really get star struck! Standing a few feet from me is 3/4 of my most favorite punk rock band on earth and I never thought I’d ever likely stand in the same room with them anywhere, let alone witness those people recreating the music that was so crucial to my growing up. They opened up with “Circle One” and musically they sounded pretty damn good. Then the actor dude comes out and he really does bear a resemblance to Darby, except he’s not all gimmicked up on drugs and booze, and he actually sings into the mic at all times but not as good as Darby...." [The Punk Vault]

-----

The show described above took place earlier this month in Chicago. The Shane West fronted Germs are coming to NYC for the first time ever in December for two shows at The Continental. TICKETS ARE ON SALE (Dec 10-11)

-----

THE GERMS / X CONNECTION

"...Later that year (1977) Donna was replaced by Cliff Hanger, but they probably never played any gigs with this line up. The fourth drummer was Don Bonebrake (later with X), who also played with The Eyes. He did some gigs as well as the recording of 'Forming 2' and 'Round And Round'...." [A history of the Germs]

x "X are a noted punk rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1977. They have achieved only limited mainstream success, but were one of the most accessible and tuneful of Los Angeles' many punk bands. Original members were Exene Cervenka (aka Christine Cervenka, vocals), John Doe (aka John Nommensen Duchac, bass/vocals), DJ Bonebrake (drums), and Billy Zoom (aka Tyson Kindell; guitar)." [Wikipedia]

X REUNION TOUR

"Old-school punk rockers can relive their mosh-pit days as seminal Los Angeles act X takes its show on the road in December....The tour will feature the band's original lineup—-vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D.J. Bonebrake..." [Tour Dates @ Glide Magazine]

3) THE MAGIC NUMBERS

The Magic Numbers

The Magic Numbers? The band opening for Bright Eyes in NJ two times the same week? Some research reveals that this British band is signed to a major and has NME on their side....

"If the summer of 2005 was your 'mellowest' to date, the Magic Numbers probably had something to do with it. Two parts Beach Boys, one part Mamas and Papas, a dash of McCartney and a pinch of Leonard Cohen - all slow-baked under the mellow Trinidad sun - the Magic Numbers are undeniably the happiest band in music, their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize."

The Onion says, "...The Magic Numbers, a much-fêted new British quartet that's been compared to the sunshine pop and cosmic Americana of The Mamas And The Papas and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's eponymous debut sounds earthy and real, in stark contrast to the neo-new-wave that's been dominating modern rock for the past two years. But The Magic Numbers may be ascending too quickly, given what they have to offer.

The Top 40 American Bands | 2005

United States

Last year I talked a lot about Information Leafblower's list of the top 40 bands in America. This year I participated in the selection. A whole bunch of bloggers were asked to list "the top 10 bands in America today." 114 "bands" were nominated. Kyle Leafblower compiled the top 40 in a list, in order.

(REMEMBER: NO bands from the UK or Canada)

Mariah Carey I tried to be objective with my list. I mixed my own worldview with the bigger picture. I define "top" to be more than a band who put out an album I like a lot (didn't nominate The Mountain Goats or The Hold Steady). (UPDATE: As Matt pointed out in the comments, I tended to weigh who's "hot" very highly) I nominated Mariah Carey even though I don't listen to her much. Other bloggers seemed to take the "favorite albums of 2005" approach. For instance the band "Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin" made the list. Mariah didn't.

Green Day HERE'S MY LIST:
1) Green Day *
2) The White Stripes
3) Bob Dylan
4) Kanye West *
5) Bright Eyes *
6) Devendra Banhart *
7) Kelly Clarkson *
8) Mariah Carey
9) Sufjan Stevens *
10) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
* made the top 40

My Runner Ups: The Decemberists, Death Cab For Cutie, Wilco, Pearl Jam, Rilo Kiley, Sleater Kinney, The Strokes

Casey Kasim

READ THE TOP 40

The White Stripes

** Six of my top 10 made the top 40.
** Three of my top 10 made the top 10.
** I have no idea how The White Stripes didn't make it at all.
** It has to be backlash & denial that kept CYHSY off the top 40.
** The National are the second best band in America right now?

Antony Antony & The Johnsons would of been in my top 10, but I figured he wasn't qualified since he accepted the UK's Mercury Award. Others voted for him anyway so he made the list (barely). I'd like to revote and add him to my list. I might have to drop Mariah.

Listen to Arctic Monkeys @ Myspace

Arctic Monkeys @ Mercury Lounge

I never even heard of Arctic Monkeys two months ago, but I was still really excited to see the albumless UK band play their first U.S. show. My anticipation grew as the lights at Mercury Lounge went down. Snoop Dogg started blasting through the speakers. The band was about to take the stage, and I knew they were going to rip things up. Then I saw them. Could these kids be them? They seemed so young. Then they started playing. They weren't moving around very much (then again, neither was the crowd). I imagined a crazy stage show. Didn't happen. Two songs in I wondered what all the hype was about. The third song was their hit. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor sounded good. Then either they or I warmed up. By the fourth song I no longer cared about their age or their stage show. The songs were tight. The songs were good. Their singer was personable and funny. Now I know why they're signed to Domino in the UK and Epic in the US. Arctic Monkeys are just getting started. Have an open mind, forget about who you think they sound like, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. (Nov 15, 2005)

Kapow! playing w/ Arctic Monkeys | MP3

I just noticed that Kapow! are playing between Surefire and Arctic Monkeys @ Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night.

Did anyone see them opening for the Fiery Furnaces at Northsix? According to Fluxblog, that show was the "debut of former Furnace Toshi Yano's new band, Kapow! Yano has a knack for '60s style pop rock, and though that genre's been strip-mined by a few generations of indie rockers by now, he manages to keep his songs sounding fresh, vibrant, and lacking that icky retro aftertaste." John Cale @ St. Ann's Warehouse, Brooklyn, NY | pics

John Cale @ St Anns Warehouse

Super-producer and ex-Velvet-Undergrounder John Cale played St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn Saturday night (Nov 12, 2005). I'm not really familiar with his solo stuff, but here's my take anyway. John has mastered the art of music. He knows how to be Bob Dylan; then David Byrne. He jumps from genre to genre playing perfectly crafted, though not necessarily original sounding, songs. That said, I absolutely loved certain parts of the two-hour-two-encore packed show, especially the slow songs. He's got one of those beautifully dark voices.

John Cale @ St Anns Warehouse

"Dragging his viola bow over the strings with singularly lugubrious verve, John Cale opened his St. Ann's Warehouse show on Saturday with the Velvet Underground's menacing gothic classic 'Venus in Furs.' That was it for the Velvets, his early band, and the viola, his signature instrument. This show was stridently about rocking, not rumination.

It's a big year for this eclectic producer-musician, who is also planning to reunite this year with Patti Smith in celebration of the 30th anniversary of her seminal 1975 album, 'Horses,' which he produced. " [NY Times]

Art Brut @ Tribeca Grand

I know a lot of people hate going to shows at Mother*ck*er and Tribeca Grand, but if you like your audiences rowdy, sweaty and not-afraid-to-dance, these are the places to catch hot bands before it's off to Bowery (big)-Webster(bigger)-Roseland(biggest). I got there at 11:00 (November 12, 2005). The line was only about five minutes long. When Art Brut went on at 12:30, the downstairs of Tribeca Grand was more packed than I've ever seen it. People were pouring out of every corner. I lost a bit of hearing, but luckily it came with the experience of a great show. They played a shorter set than the one at Mercury Lounge two nights earlier - partly because they talked less between songs. That's not a good or bad thing, just different. The songs flowed together more. The energy in the room was felt by the band who gave it right back. Are you ready Art Brut?

The Modern Age vs. Writers vs. English

Laura Modern Age pointed to this article in Guardian Unlimited that asks if anyone understands what the hell music bloggers and Pitchfork are talking about. Laura believes the answer is "no," and even accuses these hard-to-understand writers of "having the unfortunate disposition of being an asshole."

Sasha Frere-Jones, Tom Breihan, and Nick Sylvester are among those quoted by the Guardian.

We Are Scientists @ FADER Lounge

We Are Scientists are getting a lot of attention. Jeff CV called them "buzz band du jour" in his recent Gothamist review of their show at Bowery Ballroom. It's especially true in the UK where their debut album was released in October. They're even lined up to play next year's NME tour with Arctic Monkeys. All the buzz overseas should help this NYC (via California) band sell their album when it's released in the U.S. on January 10th.

They have three videos you can watch at their site, and three songs streaming on their Mypace page. This photo set comes from their short appearance at the FADER Lounge on Orchard Street in NYC during CMJ 2005 (Sept 17, 2005)

Clogs @ Tonic, NYC | pics

Two days after they played a free show at Sound Fix in Brooklyn, Clogs opened for Bell Orchestre @ Tonic in Manhattan (November 7, 2005).

Clogs @ Tonic

Wes describes it nicely, "The Clogs, a side project of The National were mellow and dreamy with viola/violin/mandolin player Padma Newsome (wasn't that Natalie Portman's character in Star Wars?) taking up most of the spot light with spectacular and intense command of his instruments. I sat down on Tonic's concrete floor and was taken away for most of the show. The standard instrumentation was bassoon, drums/steel drum, guitar and violin/viola. Recommended for those who enjoy sophisticated, calm instrumental music."

Strokes planning "Secret Shows"

"As the Jan. 3 release of their third RCA album, 'First Impressions of Earth,' draws near, the Strokes are about to set off on a worldwide promo tour that will feature secret club shows in several cities. The outing will begin Monday (Nov. 14) in Tokyo and proceed to Sydney, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Berlin, Milan and Madrid through mid-December.

'We'll do eight new songs and leave, just like how it was with the first record, with no one knowing any of our music,' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. tells Billboard.com. 'We thought it would build some excitement.'

The club blitz will continue in North America the week the new album comes out, with shows being eyed for New York, Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles. The Strokes' 'proper' North American tour will then get underway in February and run until the end of April." [Billboard]

Sound Fix Instore Reports & Upcoming Schedule

"Then there's the instore at Sound Fix in Williamsburg. I had not decided what to expect so I was extremely pleasantly surprised to find the room full of people from far and away. While not as prepared as I should have been, it was so freeing to be doing some new songs again. And some of the stuff I did doesn't even feel that new anymore, as they are tunes I wrote last year. I couldn't have asked for a better audience to nervously preview new material in front of. The heat was crazy in there, and yet the audience were totally chilled out and cool during the whole set. Thanks a lot." [Sondre Lerche]

"The day started at Sound Fix on Brooklyn’s legendary Bedford Avenue. Shortly after noon, the crowd descended upon the café in back of the shop. As Matt and Bonnie unrolled their guitar leads, customers drank coffee, tea and things of a stronger nature (like liquid cocaine). This show, needless to say, was a roaring success." [Drag City Newsletter]

"The Oakland band Rogue Wave played an in-store performance at Brooklyn's Sound Fix a few weeks ago. It was scheduled for 12:30 pm on a Saturday, which is insanely early for a music event or anything involving travel from one part of Brooklyn to any other. We gathered at the record store clutching giant cups of coffee and stared blearily at the band, who stared blearily back." [Glorious Noise]

John Cale | Fun Facts & Video | Show Saturday

John Cale

John Cale facts from Wikipedia:

John Cale * Welsh is his first language.

* In 1965, he joined Lou Reed (who is exactly a week older than Cale) in the newly-formed Velvet Underground, but left in 1968, due in part to creative disagreements with Reed.

* Cale appears on the Velvet Underground's first two albums, The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat.

* during one gig he chopped the head off a dead chicken with a meat cleaver, and his band walked offstage in protest. Cale's drummer--a vegetarian--was so bothered he quit the group.

* He produced Squeeze, Patti Smith, and Sham 69, among others. He produced a number of important protopunk records, including debuts by Patti Smith, The Stooges and The Modern Lovers.

Brazilian Girls heart Animals

Brazilian Girls

"I really think that a lot of people should not have dogs or animals. There are a lot of people who don't see an animal as a companion or as a soul, but as a free alarm system or bodyguard. Who knows—maybe these people treat their girlfriends or children the same way. There's a lot of misery on the planet. In fact, if music wasn't my passion, I think I would be trying to help lessen animal suffering because there's a lot of it." [PETA talks to the Brazilian Girls]

Brandon Flowers & Bono duet in Las Vegas | MP3 & Video

Bono and Brandon

"Bono invited The Killers' Brandon on stage this weekend during U2's performance in Las Vegas for a cozy, little duet. Hot! Before they sang "In A Little Whille," Bono introduced the guest singer by telling the audience he had some vocals problems and needed help from the singer from the "swankiest rock and roll band on the planet." I told ya that a year and half ago." [Download the video and MP3 @ Arjan Writes]

Eleanor Friedberger takes on Pitchfork, Rough Trade

On Pitchfork
"...She listed three things she'd like her records to be. She wants to pick it apart and dance to it and weep to it. She didn't have one of those three responses to our record. I'm not sorry about that. Tough shit for her, you know?..."

On Rough Trade
"...No. They were frustrated. It's not actually part of our contract. They just gave us money to record it. Personally I'm frustrated with them for that. They didn't think it was a commercial record...."

The National vs. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah | Indie Rock Showdown

Clay Your Hands Say Yeah vs the National

This is so perfect. So many times I started writing a post about my disgust with the battle between indie rock fans related to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah / National tour. Blog after blog after music site, even Pitchfork, touched on the same theme: CYHSY are the opener on the National's tour and people left after the opener and those people are freakin stupid because the National rule and maybe even CYHSY suck and on and on. I was going to compare the whole mess to sports. I never did it, partially because I didn't want to add more noise in particular to the "people leaving before the the National" part of it.

Above and below photos of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah playing the National in soccer ("Indie Rock Football Showdown") (thx Tom)

The Family | Devendra Banhart Sick of Freak-folk Label

CRIPPLE CROW | THE FAMILY
Cripple Crow

"Banhart's most recent album, Cripple Crow finds him in a more communal vibe. The album was recorded with the help of those he calls 'the Family,' a small group of friends from various bands (Vetiver, Cocorosie, Bunny Brains, Joanna Newsom, Feathers, Espers, Tarantula A.D.). The Family, Banhart reveals, is something he came up with to ward off the tiresome freak-folk label that's been slapped on everything he and his group of musician friends do. 'I was just trying to give an alternative to a lame name, and I thought that sounded pretty,' he explains." [Popmatters talked to Devendra]

Pitchfork Interviewed Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

A Google search for "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" and "Pitchfork" yields "about 94,700" results. Last week the band came face to face with Mr. Pitchfork himself. Read the CYHSY interview by Ryan Schreiber.

Pitchfork: What! You're not familiar with the Talking Heads?

Alec: I am familiar with them. I have all their albums, and I know all of their stuff backward and forward. But it's irrelevant. And also, if you do know all their stuff backward and forward, you know that it doesn't sound like the Talking Heads.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE DOES DALLAS
Broken Social Scene in Dallas

Broken Social Scene added 2 NYC dates to their current tour: January 27 & 28, 2006 @ Webster Hall. (thx Chris)

---

"The band did not come without a secret weapon prepared, however, and the emergence of singer Leslie Feist to perform on '7/4 (Shoreline)' and 'Almost Crimes' energized audience and band alike. Bounding about the stage playing air guitar alongside Drew and joining in enthusiastically if inexpertly on second drums, the white-clad Feist gave the show an injection of stage presence the rest of Broken Social Scene's members rather lacked." [Billboard was at the November 1st Colorado show]

"After last night, I've concluded that Broken Social Scene is one of the few bands out there right now that can give the Arcade Fire a run for their money for the title of best live band in the world." [Gorilla vs. Bear took the above photo at the November 4th Dallas show]

Roadrunner Records 25th Anniversary | Show & CD

Roadrunner All Stars "The year-long celebration of Roadrunner Records' 25th Anniversary culminates on December 15th, when the label will host a once-in-a-lifetime concert at the Nokia Theatre in New York City.

The show will feature a RR United 'house band' comprised of Joey Jordison (Slipknot) - drums, Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) - lead guitar, Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory, Brujeria) - rhythm guitar, and Adam Duce (Machine Head) - bass and is shaping up to be a defining event in Hard Rock history.

Special guests, including past and present Roadrunner artists and other metal icons, will join the band onstage to play 20 classic Roadrunner tunes along with a few choice cuts from The All Star Sessions.

Tickets go on sale Saturday November 12th.

-----

Roadrunner All Stars Released on October 11th, debuting at #76 on Billboard's Top 200 album charts, Roadrunner United, The All Star Sessions, is a groundbreaking album which, according to Kerrang Magazine, is 'a superb arse-flaying metal record,' and 'boasts no weak points.'

Created as the ultimate celebration of the label's anniversary, the album features 55 artists from 42 different past/current Roadrunner bands playing 18 original songs written by 4 chosen captains. It is a true master-class in hard rock/metal that also includes a DVD, shot by Techtronic Rocket Society (Chimaira The Dehumanizing Process DVD) with a full hour of behind-the-scenes footage on the recording of the album." [Roadrunner]

-----

Vocalists on the CD include Peter Steele from Type O Negative (clearly still alive), Keith Caputo from Life of Agony, King Diamond, Max Cavalera from Sepultura, Mikael from Opeth, Tim Williams from Vision of Disorder, Christian from Ill Nino, and others. You can listen to a few songs on their ECARD, and there's a video

Bell Orchestre @ Tonic, NYC | pics

"Muted brass moans and trades fanfare, static crashes, the guitars ring, and slowly it begins to come together. The structure is modest at first, but as sweat pours in, the project's scope reveals itself. Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light is colossal. The payload of six years' determination, the debut album from Bell Orchestre (French pronunciation: 'or-kest') gives orchestral post-rock the update it has desperately needed since Godspeed You Black Emperor! reached the genre's creative apex with their classic Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven five years ago." [Pitchfork]

Bell Orchestre played Tonic in NYC Monday night (November 7, 2005).

Bell Orchestre @ Tonic

I don't think you can talk about Bell Orchestre without mentioning that they share two members with The Arcade Fire. I think it's worth comparing the two groups musically too. Add keyboards, vocals, helmets, crazy hooks, and some violence to Bell Orchestre, and you should end up pretty close to The Arcade Fire's slow songs. It helps that the very dynamic Richard Parry is one of the shared members. Maybe I haven't listened close enough yet, but the Belle Orchestre album seems like background music. Live they made me want to dance.

The PAPER Magazine Nightlife Awards were held at Hiro Ballroom Sunday night (Nov 6, 2005). Michael Stipe was there.

"Sarah Lewitinn, a k a Ultragrrrl, raked in three awards. She won the people's choice awards for best deejay and best party — the Stolen Transmission party she throws with fellow blogger Karen Plus One. The duo — known as Tarts of Pleasure — also won best promoters." [NY Post]

"Last night were the Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards. Karen and I won the most awards of the night... 3 in total, and we have you guys to thank for that! We were psyched, but it seemed as if NOBODY knew who we were, which was funny." [Ultragrrrl]

"...the key difference seems to be friendship. our little group (consisting of the stolen transmission crew, the misshapes, thomas, junior sanchez, josh m, sandra, scott, jenny, rob hitt, etc etc) were the loudest in the room. every time a friend was nominated, we cheered. every time one of us won an award, we thanked the rest of the pack. you didnt get that with the old schoolers." [Karen Plus One]

"another oudoor brunch. then the paper nightlife awards where i saw michael stipe wear a parakeet costume. watched a crazy cabaret performance by the citizens band." [Daily Refill]

Nokia Theatre Times Square - Reviews | Good or Bad?

NOKIA THEATRE TIMES SQUARE
The Nokia Theatre

The Danzig show was my only time at the new Nokia Theatre in Times Square so far. I thought it was awesome. Not long after, Jerry published a scathing review. I was surprised. Then today Fluxblog echoed my sentiments in his Spoon review: "...it's an amazing venue, probably the best in the city." Fluxblog's opinion is in sharp contrast to the one someone else left in the comments today: "... i now think there is a great need to create a ban on this venue. band was great, tight, musically brilliant and the show simply sucked. everything that is wrong with the music industry, with this town, this country for that matter is summed up in that show. corporate america and their neo-nazi security guards and nasty middle america logo emblazened veues with product walls have taken over...."

I like a grungy show as much as anyone (that likes a grungy show), but you also can't beat (cost aside) the comfort and Disney World-like experience of the Nokia. What do you think?

Lou Reed introduced the MTVu Awards @ Roseland Ballroom Wednesday night (Nov. 2, 2005). Phillip Seymour Hoffman came out next to introduce The Go! Team's one song live performance. I said I expected cheerleaders when I first saw the band in March. At least one person made fun of me. Well, this time they brought the cheerleaders. It's hard to rate a one song performance, but it was fun to watch at least.

Gratitude @ Southpaw

Saturday night (November 5, 2005) I stopped by Southpaw to catch Jonah Matranga's latest incarnation, Gratitude (sort-of). There's been a few line-up changes since Gratitude formed a little over a year ago. Now I'm hearing about lawsuits and the possibility that the band was dropped from their major label.

The latest line-up brings back members of New End Original, Jonah's Jade Tree band. The just-over-an-hour headlining set was a mix of Gratitude and NEO songs. The crowd was small, but dedicated. Most everyone knew all the words and was singing along.
