Clogs @ Tonic, NYC | pics

Two days after they played a free show at Sound Fix in Brooklyn, Clogs opened for Bell Orchestre @ Tonic in Manhattan (November 7, 2005).

Clogs @ Tonic

Wes describes it nicely, "The Clogs, a side project of The National were mellow and dreamy with viola/violin/mandolin player Padma Newsome (wasn't that Natalie Portman's character in Star Wars?) taking up most of the spot light with spectacular and intense command of his instruments. I sat down on Tonic's concrete floor and was taken away for most of the show. The standard instrumentation was bassoon, drums/steel drum, guitar and violin/viola. Recommended for those who enjoy sophisticated, calm instrumental music."

"Kitchen Sink Music is a non-profit music organization committed to developing new audiences for classical music. It presents and promotes concerts that bring classical music into new settings by pairing it with non-traditional music. Additionally it produces an after-school music program for at-risk kids in Harlem. The after school music program, produced in association with Friends of the Children NY, brings classical musicians to at-risks youths in an innovative 6 week after school program. The program is led by pianist Alpin Hong, winner of the 2005 Robert Sherman McGraw Hill Arts in Education Award. The program focuses on interactive initiatives that range from homework help to rhythm games.

November 13th marks the debut of the KSM series that puts classical musicians in non-traditional and alternative settings. By putting classical music in these new settings and pairing it with different music, it hopes to build a new audience for classical music."

Strokes planning "Secret Shows"

"As the Jan. 3 release of their third RCA album, 'First Impressions of Earth,' draws near, the Strokes are about to set off on a worldwide promo tour that will feature secret club shows in several cities. The outing will begin Monday (Nov. 14) in Tokyo and proceed to Sydney, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Berlin, Milan and Madrid through mid-December.

'We'll do eight new songs and leave, just like how it was with the first record, with no one knowing any of our music,' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. tells Billboard.com. 'We thought it would build some excitement.'

The club blitz will continue in North America the week the new album comes out, with shows being eyed for New York, Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles. The Strokes' 'proper' North American tour will then get underway in February and run until the end of April." [Billboard]

Sound Fix Instore Reports & Upcoming Schedule

"Then there's the instore at Sound Fix in Williamsburg. I had not decided what to expect so I was extremely pleasantly surprised to find the room full of people from far and away. While not as prepared as I should have been, it was so freeing to be doing some new songs again. And some of the stuff I did doesn't even feel that new anymore, as they are tunes I wrote last year. I couldn't have asked for a better audience to nervously preview new material in front of. The heat was crazy in there, and yet the audience were totally chilled out and cool during the whole set. Thanks a lot." [Sondre Lerche]

"The day started at Sound Fix on Brooklyn’s legendary Bedford Avenue. Shortly after noon, the crowd descended upon the café in back of the shop. As Matt and Bonnie unrolled their guitar leads, customers drank coffee, tea and things of a stronger nature (like liquid cocaine). This show, needless to say, was a roaring success." [Drag City Newsletter]

"The Oakland band Rogue Wave played an in-store performance at Brooklyn's Sound Fix a few weeks ago. It was scheduled for 12:30 pm on a Saturday, which is insanely early for a music event or anything involving travel from one part of Brooklyn to any other. We gathered at the record store clutching giant cups of coffee and stared blearily at the band, who stared blearily back." [Glorious Noise]

John Cale | Fun Facts & Video | Show Saturday

John Cale

John Cale facts from Wikipedia:

John Cale * Welsh is his first language.

* In 1965, he joined Lou Reed (who is exactly a week older than Cale) in the newly-formed Velvet Underground, but left in 1968, due in part to creative disagreements with Reed.

* Cale appears on the Velvet Underground's first two albums, The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat.

* during one gig he chopped the head off a dead chicken with a meat cleaver, and his band walked offstage in protest. Cale's drummer--a vegetarian--was so bothered he quit the group.

* He produced Squeeze, Patti Smith, and Sham 69, among others. He produced a number of important protopunk records, including debuts by Patti Smith, The Stooges and The Modern Lovers.

Brazilian Girls heart Animals

Brazilian Girls

"I really think that a lot of people should not have dogs or animals. There are a lot of people who don't see an animal as a companion or as a soul, but as a free alarm system or bodyguard. Who knows—maybe these people treat their girlfriends or children the same way. There's a lot of misery on the planet. In fact, if music wasn't my passion, I think I would be trying to help lessen animal suffering because there's a lot of it." [PETA talks to the Brazilian Girls]

Eleanor Friedberger takes on Pitchfork, Rough Trade

On Pitchfork
"...She listed three things she'd like her records to be. She wants to pick it apart and dance to it and weep to it. She didn't have one of those three responses to our record. I'm not sorry about that. Tough shit for her, you know?..."

On Rough Trade
"...No. They were frustrated. It's not actually part of our contract. They just gave us money to record it. Personally I'm frustrated with them for that. They didn't think it was a commercial record...."

The National vs. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah | Indie Rock Showdown

Clay Your Hands Say Yeah vs the National

This is so perfect. So many times I started writing a post about my disgust with the battle between indie rock fans related to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah / National tour. Blog after blog after music site, even Pitchfork, touched on the same theme: CYHSY are the opener on the National's tour and people left after the opener and those people are freakin stupid because the National rule and maybe even CYHSY suck and on and on. I was going to compare the whole mess to sports. I never did it, partially because I didn't want to add more noise in particular to the "people leaving before the the National" part of it.

Above and below photos of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah playing the National in soccer ("Indie Rock Football Showdown") (thx Tom)

The Family | Devendra Banhart Sick of Freak-folk Label

CRIPPLE CROW | THE FAMILY
Cripple Crow

"Banhart's most recent album, Cripple Crow finds him in a more communal vibe. The album was recorded with the help of those he calls 'the Family,' a small group of friends from various bands (Vetiver, Cocorosie, Bunny Brains, Joanna Newsom, Feathers, Espers, Tarantula A.D.). The Family, Banhart reveals, is something he came up with to ward off the tiresome freak-folk label that's been slapped on everything he and his group of musician friends do. 'I was just trying to give an alternative to a lame name, and I thought that sounded pretty,' he explains." [Popmatters talked to Devendra]

A Google search for "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" and "Pitchfork" yields "about 94,700" results. Last week the band came face to face with Mr. Pitchfork himself. Read the CYHSY interview by Ryan Schreiber.

Pitchfork: What! You're not familiar with the Talking Heads?

Alec: I am familiar with them. I have all their albums, and I know all of their stuff backward and forward. But it's irrelevant. And also, if you do know all their stuff backward and forward, you know that it doesn't sound like the Talking Heads.

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE DOES DALLAS
Broken Social Scene in Dallas

Broken Social Scene added 2 NYC dates to their current tour: January 27 & 28, 2006 @ Webster Hall. (thx Chris)

---

"The band did not come without a secret weapon prepared, however, and the emergence of singer Leslie Feist to perform on '7/4 (Shoreline)' and 'Almost Crimes' energized audience and band alike. Bounding about the stage playing air guitar alongside Drew and joining in enthusiastically if inexpertly on second drums, the white-clad Feist gave the show an injection of stage presence the rest of Broken Social Scene's members rather lacked." [Billboard was at the November 1st Colorado show]

"After last night, I've concluded that Broken Social Scene is one of the few bands out there right now that can give the Arcade Fire a run for their money for the title of best live band in the world." [Gorilla vs. Bear took the above photo at the November 4th Dallas show]

Roadrunner Records 25th Anniversary | Show & CD

Roadrunner All Stars "The year-long celebration of Roadrunner Records' 25th Anniversary culminates on December 15th, when the label will host a once-in-a-lifetime concert at the Nokia Theatre in New York City.

The show will feature a RR United 'house band' comprised of Joey Jordison (Slipknot) - drums, Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) - lead guitar, Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory, Brujeria) - rhythm guitar, and Adam Duce (Machine Head) - bass and is shaping up to be a defining event in Hard Rock history.

Special guests, including past and present Roadrunner artists and other metal icons, will join the band onstage to play 20 classic Roadrunner tunes along with a few choice cuts from The All Star Sessions.

Tickets go on sale Saturday November 12th.

-----

Roadrunner All Stars Released on October 11th, debuting at #76 on Billboard's Top 200 album charts, Roadrunner United, The All Star Sessions, is a groundbreaking album which, according to Kerrang Magazine, is 'a superb arse-flaying metal record,' and 'boasts no weak points.'

Created as the ultimate celebration of the label's anniversary, the album features 55 artists from 42 different past/current Roadrunner bands playing 18 original songs written by 4 chosen captains. It is a true master-class in hard rock/metal that also includes a DVD, shot by Techtronic Rocket Society (Chimaira The Dehumanizing Process DVD) with a full hour of behind-the-scenes footage on the recording of the album." [Roadrunner]

Bell Orchestre @ Tonic, NYC | pics

"Muted brass moans and trades fanfare, static crashes, the guitars ring, and slowly it begins to come together. The structure is modest at first, but as sweat pours in, the project's scope reveals itself. Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light is colossal. The payload of six years' determination, the debut album from Bell Orchestre (French pronunciation: 'or-kest') gives orchestral post-rock the update it has desperately needed since Godspeed You Black Emperor! reached the genre's creative apex with their classic Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven five years ago." [Pitchfork]

Bell Orchestre played Tonic in NYC Monday night (November 7, 2005).

Bell Orchestre @ Tonic

I don't think you can talk about Bell Orchestre without mentioning that they share two members with The Arcade Fire. I think it's worth comparing the two groups musically too. Add keyboards, vocals, helmets, crazy hooks, and some violence to Bell Orchestre, and you should end up pretty close to The Arcade Fire's slow songs. It helps that the very dynamic Richard Parry is one of the shared members. Maybe I haven't listened close enough yet, but the Belle Orchestre album seems like background music. Live they made me want to dance.

"hey everybody...this is bob, the guy who played drums w/ the FF's recently. for the record, i DO NOT own any bit of the club Northsix. i book alot of the shows and bartend there but i am a mere employee of the place."

The Fiery Furnaces @ Northsix

The Fiery Furnaces played Northsix in Brooklyn Saturday night (Nov 5, 2005) while I was at the Gratitude show at Southpaw.

The Fiery Furnaces @ Northsix

My friend Joe Birch said it was a great show ("All around a good time, they actually made converts out of a few friends of mine"). He sent these pics.

2005 PAPER Nightlife Awards | Misshapes, Heatherette & Ultragrrrl

SARAH & KAREN
Sarah Lewitinn & Keren Plus One

The PAPER Magazine Nightlife Awards were held at Hiro Ballroom Sunday night (Nov 6, 2005). Michael Stipe was there.

"Sarah Lewitinn, a k a Ultragrrrl, raked in three awards. She won the people's choice awards for best deejay and best party — the Stolen Transmission party she throws with fellow blogger Karen Plus One. The duo — known as Tarts of Pleasure — also won best promoters." [NY Post]

"Last night were the Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards. Karen and I won the most awards of the night... 3 in total, and we have you guys to thank for that! We were psyched, but it seemed as if NOBODY knew who we were, which was funny." [Ultragrrrl]

"...the key difference seems to be friendship. our little group (consisting of the stolen transmission crew, the misshapes, thomas, junior sanchez, josh m, sandra, scott, jenny, rob hitt, etc etc) were the loudest in the room. every time a friend was nominated, we cheered. every time one of us won an award, we thanked the rest of the pack. you didnt get that with the old schoolers." [Karen Plus One]

"another oudoor brunch. then the paper nightlife awards where i saw michael stipe wear a parakeet costume. watched a crazy cabaret performance by the citizens band." [Daily Refill]

"At the Paper nightlife awards, blogger Sarah “Ultragrrl” Lewitinn wins three awards, signifying traditional media’s acceptance that bloggers and barflies are not mutually exclusive." [Gawker]

Best new club: Happy Valley
Best new deejay: Lockdown and Spencer
Best new party: Misshapes
Best new hotel: Maritime
Best new bar and lounge: East Side Company Bar
Best designer: Heatherette ("with influence on the nightlife scene;")
Best new gay night: Cuckoo Club
Best Club: APT

Nokia Theatre Times Square - Reviews | Good or Bad?

NOKIA THEATRE TIMES SQUARE
The Nokia Theatre

The Danzig show was my only time at the new Nokia Theatre in Times Square so far. I thought it was awesome. Not long after, Jerry published a scathing review. I was surprised. Then today Fluxblog echoed my sentiments in his Spoon review: "...it's an amazing venue, probably the best in the city." Fluxblog's opinion is in sharp contrast to the one someone else left in the comments today: "... i now think there is a great need to create a ban on this venue. band was great, tight, musically brilliant and the show simply sucked. everything that is wrong with the music industry, with this town, this country for that matter is summed up in that show. corporate america and their neo-nazi security guards and nasty middle america logo emblazened veues with product walls have taken over...."

I like a grungy show as much as anyone (that likes a grungy show), but you also can't beat (cost aside) the comfort and Disney World-like experience of the Nokia. What do you think?

"Singer and songwriter Phil Collins said on Sunday he would be open to a reunion of his old band Genesis, a day before he is set to perform in Israel as part of his what he calls his final tour. "I'm open for it," said Collins, 54, the most prominent international music star to perform in Israel since the start of a Palestinian uprising more than five years ago." [Reuters]

The Go! Team @ Roseland, NYC | MTVu Awards | pics

The Go! Team @ Roseland Ballroom

Lou Reed introduced the MTVu Awards @ Roseland Ballroom Wednesday night (Nov. 2, 2005). Phillip Seymour Hoffman came out next to introduce The Go! Team's one song live performance. I said I expected cheerleaders when I first saw the band in March. At least one person made fun of me. Well, this time they brought the cheerleaders. It's hard to rate a one song performance, but it was fun to watch at least.

Jay Loose Record was not impressed at all with their headlining performance at Webster Hall later that night.

Gratitude @ Southpaw, Brooklyn, NY | pics

Gratitude @ Southpaw

Saturday night (November 5, 2005) I stopped by Southpaw to catch Jonah Matranga's latest incarnation, Gratitude (sort-of). There's been a few line-up changes since Gratitude formed a little over a year ago. Now I'm hearing about lawsuits and the possibility that the band was dropped from their major label.

The latest line-up brings back members of New End Original, Jonah's Jade Tree band. The just-over-an-hour headlining set was a mix of Gratitude and NEO songs. The crowd was small, but dedicated. Most everyone knew all the words and was singing along.

The Arcade Fire in Union Square Video | Cure Cover

Jeff was one of the lucky souls to catch The Arcade Fire in Union Square Saturday night. He took some video. The first one is a cover of the Cure's Boy's Don't Cry.

Arcade Fire Played in Union Square Last Night

I woke up today to find this in the comments:

----

ALWAYS TAKE THE SUBWAY
Holy fucking shit.
We’re walking up the stairs from the N,R at Union Square, bout 2a.m. Sat night. Couple street musicians are banging out some tune when we get up to the park.
Holy fucking shit.
It’s Arcade Fire.
Covering New Order. Win and Will on guitars. Regine on guitar-case-as-percussion. Why the fuck not? It’s a nice night in New York, why not blow the dozen wanderers’ minds who’ve magically stumbled upon this scene? Cover a couple more, then wrap it up with Tunnels. Holy fucking shit. New York is magic.

----

Photo courtesy of Let's Do This.

----

I'm working on getting more pictures and figuring out a way to post the video. stay tuned....
