I woke up today to find this in the comments:

----

ALWAYS TAKE THE SUBWAY
Holy fucking shit.
We’re walking up the stairs from the N,R at Union Square, bout 2a.m. Sat night. Couple street musicians are banging out some tune when we get up to the park.
Holy fucking shit.
It’s Arcade Fire.
Covering New Order. Win and Will on guitars. Regine on guitar-case-as-percussion. Why the fuck not? It’s a nice night in New York, why not blow the dozen wanderers’ minds who’ve magically stumbled upon this scene? Cover a couple more, then wrap it up with Tunnels. Holy fucking shit. New York is magic.

I'm working on getting more pictures and figuring out a way to post the video. stay tuned....

This is simply beautiful. Which new order
song?, tell me temptation and I will just die.
makes me have hope, smile and cry at the same time.
random poetic actions is goodness.

damn...i was just making my way back from the Spoon show...wish i knew...
how many songs?

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2005 3:48 PM

i got there a while after they started, so i only saw them play "wave of mutilation" and "boys don't cry" a new order song whose name i forget and "tunnels". apparently they played "this must be the place" before i got there; i'd figure 5 or 6 songs.

How did they sound?

so wheres the show tonight?

Posted by brassbonanza | November 6, 2005 7:51 PM

they sounded good, until win broke a string. (my friend and i picked up the bits of the string after they'd left.)

there's no show tonight, i don't think; they said they were just in town for a wedding and had their guitars, etc. with them and decided to play some songs.

That is quite a story! Very nice!

maybe they will show up tomorrow at Tonic.

Posted by danfun | November 6, 2005 11:24 PM

The New Order song was probably "Age of Consent," because they've been playing that lately in concert.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2005 11:28 PM

Magic. What a rush it must have been coming up from the tube and realizing what was unfolding. Wow.

Posted by Mark | November 6, 2005 11:34 PM

I'm guessing "Age of Consent" on the New Order song too. You can download them singing it at Vegoose (if you understand torrents and FLAC):

Belle Orchestre played a show at Tonic last night at 8. They have been in town since Sat. Belle and The Clogs played a free show in Brooklyn at Fix in Williamsburg on Saturday. Wish I would have seen them on the street....would have been amazing.
