Neko Case @ Joe's Pub, NYC | pics
Download an MP3 at Filter

"Singer-songwriter, Neko Case has finished recording her first studio solo album since 2002. "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" is scheduled to come out March 7 on Anti- Records. A variety of musicians will contribute on the new LP — Garth Hudson of The Band, Kelly Hogan, The Sadies, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand and Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico." [Chart Attack]

To celebrate the completion of the new album, Neko played two shows at Joe's Pub in NYC last night (Nov 17, 2005). I went to the early one. She played a lot of the new stuff. Accompanying her on vocals was a girl from a band whose name I can't remember (Visi-something). It was a beautiful show.

was it in the vein of blacklisted or more country? was the sadies her backing band?
ive seen her twice but neither time was heavy on the blacklisted material...usually a lot of country a la the live album she released. she's excellent but i skipped this show because i imagined more of the same.
cant wait for the new cd though...and uh, awesome pics as usual.

The accompanying singer's name is Rachel Flotard. She's from Seattle via Jersey and fronts a band called Visqueen. She's also one of the coolest people on the planet. Just sayin'...

Sadies weren't the band this time. She had Jon Raohouse, P. Rigby and others. More of a "Boyfriends" configuration. The new album may be a bit "rockier" then others. At least in some of the new songs we heard that was the impression I got. The bassist (his name escapes me) had a faster, more pounding, driving beat. It pushed the rest to rock out a bit more even on some older tracks.
My ditto thanks for the pics. I left my camera behind yesterday and was scouring flickr last night for good shots. These are the best so far.

She is so heart-stoppingly beautiful. It actually hurt me a bit to scroll through those photos. Just an absolute goddess...

this is my show review....
caught the early neko case show at joe's pub tonight. a great show. it felt more like a listening party than a majorly pre-thought-out concert, which was nice. neko plays a surprising number of her older tunes, mixed in with some new songs off her live lbum and some of the newest ones on her upcoming release.
she spent a lot of time tuning her guitar -- i would like her to get 6 guitars and have them all pre-tuned. seriously, she could afford that now, right? though i guess it's a nice time for her usual chatting with the audience and her band, which i would miss. hmmmm.
i realized something was really different this time around seeing her, couldn't figure out what it was, then it came to me: neko's vocals weren't drenched in the usual heavy reverb. it was sort of nice to really hear her voice. that gal can belt. zowie!
tom ray and jon rauhouse (loooking very good after the stint thingie) were there, as was rachel flotard from visqueen doing harmonies. i don't know the other guys in the band but they were pretty good. no sadies, just sayin. and the chick was no hogan or nora o'connor but you can't have everything....
the new songs are amazing. it will be a very very good thing. can't wait.

I hope you don't mind me posting about a non-NYC show, but I got some pretty decent photos of her in L.A. a week ago. (Note: She was wearing the same dress. And this is only the second time I've seen her perform in something other than a well-worn T-shirt and pants.) It's funny to read about her retuning her guitars at the Joe's Pub show. I wrote about that in one of my captions. Anyway, just thought I would share:
