The Magic Numbers

The Magic Numbers? The band opening for Bright Eyes in NJ two times the same week? Some research reveals that this British band is signed to a major and has NME on their side....

"If the summer of 2005 was your 'mellowest' to date, the Magic Numbers probably had something to do with it. Two parts Beach Boys, one part Mamas and Papas, a dash of McCartney and a pinch of Leonard Cohen - all slow-baked under the mellow Trinidad sun - the Magic Numbers are undeniably the happiest band in music, their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize."

The Onion says, "...The Magic Numbers, a much-fĂȘted new British quartet that's been compared to the sunshine pop and cosmic Americana of The Mamas And The Papas and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's eponymous debut sounds earthy and real, in stark contrast to the neo-new-wave that's been dominating modern rock for the past two years. But The Magic Numbers may be ascending too quickly, given what they have to offer.

I love the disc and can't wait for the show at the Bowery Ballroom. I singed up for the newsletter. Maybe I will make it to the Mercury Lounge show.

I saw these guys at Vegoose, and was super impressed. I had their album, but hadn't really listened to it, now it's a regular in my ipod rotation.

I saw their 1st show US show back in March totally by accident. My friend's band Gold Streets happened to be on the bill with them at Sin-E and this was the night before they opened for Doves at Bowery Ballroom. I walked in on them mid-set and they were great! They probably got an American record deal during that trip (they also played SXSW a few days afterwards). I slept on tickets for the BB show, but I may make it to to the Merc. I'm glad I have another chance to see them on this tour.

This band is fat and hairy. Who thinks fat hairy people can make music? I certainly don't.

whoever said that comment about "who think fat hairy people can't make music" obviously doesnt listen to much music, especially music from the 70s.
on that note, check out my band "the fat hairy band" at www.mediawave.blogspot.com

just kidding
seriously though... the magic numbers album is at least an 8.5 or maybe a 9. It's been on my rotation since I got it as an import months and months ago. They are one of the best bands to come along in ages. I'm really glad they have another show at the Mercury because otherwise I would ahve missed out

capitol records' street team has been getting free tickets to cover magic numbers shows, so, my guess is that they're signed to something on EMI.

Their record is indeed being distributed via EMI here (at least that's what Rhapsody has when I go to their page) and I think it came out here in October or so (it came out in the UK in June). I'd give it about an 8.0 if I had to rate it like that, though I think the Pitchfork rating scales are a bit inane.

Oh and Brett, fuck you and your corporate media driven thin, pretty boy, heroin chic standards for musicians very much.

Signed,
A fat, hairy Magic Numbers fan

caught them randomly one night in manchester (england) in some small club. i knew absolutely nothing about them, but it was one of the best, most intimate shows i've ever attended.

HIGHLY highly recommend them live. they're just great musicians and people!
