Win 2 Tickets to Paul Oakenfold | A BV CONTEST
Did you know that Paul Oakenfold used to manage Run D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys in the 80's? The Superstar DJ/Producer was also involved with at least 17 albums and made Q Magazine's 2002 list of 50 Bands to See Before You Die.(thanks Wikipedia)

On Thanksgiving, Paul Oakenfold, Seb Fontaine and Liquid Todd are DJing Crobar in NYC. Tickets at the door are $50.00 each. Reduced admission on the Bradley Rose guestlist will cost you $40.00. If you want to win two free tickets, email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: CROBAR) by Tuesday Nov 22, 2005 @ 6:00 PM.
In the email, tell me:
a) if you're happy to see DJ/nightclub coverage on BrooklynVegan
b) and if so, what other clubs you like going to & DJs you like seeing
I won't share your email address with anyone. Let me know if you don't want to be added to a mailing list that I might make in the future. One winner will be picked at random.

agreed. this guy did a lot for dance music in his day, but unlike the other "superstar" dj's, he failed to evolve with the times. i hold him personally responsible for the terrible crowds with outdated tastes in electronic music that flock to NYC megaclubs...i hope to god that pacha nyc is 1/18th as awesome as pacha ibiza.

He also did A&R for some label and signed DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince to their first major deal.

Que? I thought that Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin managed RUN DMC and The Beasties back in the day? Please explain.

Are there any DJ's who play Crobar that would be better for a contest? I know Tiesto and Deep Dish are both coming up.

I know beggars can't be choosers but these contests are kinda annoying...

I never did a contest before because I thought they might be annoying, but then the LCD one seemed like a good opportunity to try it and the response was really positive. How can I make them less annoying?

Back in England by the early '80s, Oakenfold worked as a club promoter and British agent for the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C.

I think the concerts would be less annoying if they were a "treat" of sorts... like once every 2-3 weeks. You should also use some discretion when deciding which shows to have these contests for -- LCD is good, since it relates well to most of the assumed audience here while a Paul Oakenfold contest makes it just seem like a promoter who knows the amount of your readership has stepped in and offered you tix simply to get his event some exposure... Regardless, your blog is tops out there - so with or without the contests I think most people will keep coming back.

agreed, paul oakenfold tix spell SELLOUT to me. how much crobar payin' you?

Some coverage of DJ's and the club scene are fine if it's kept in context. By context, I mean something at least somewhat germane to the "indie-rock" or other "rock scene" (very broad I know...), particularly those of the NY scene. Although, it may seem self-limiting to focus on NYC, I would assume the majority of your readers are in the area and would like to be in the know and be able to attend events.
One other point, posting MP3s when possible is a very good idea and I'm assuming you got that from many people in response to your first contest. Overall, very good blog and one that could use a little nudity and/or profanity once in a while.

I wish they were paying me.

Oakenfold IS the MAN! Try listening to his sets more than once and you will see he takes it to a whole other level that "other" dj's dont. Too many people like to judge him, prob cos he makes alot of money. If you ever hear him in an interview he says he would love to play in a bar to 100 people but that aint going to happens- he has a big following - me included!
Leave the guy alone he just had his heart broken!
