Trey Anastasio Replaces My Morning Jacket @ MSG

I guess it's old news that My Morning Jacket cancelled their European tour due to illness, but I just realized they're not opening for the Black Crowes at Madison Square Garden on New Years Eve anymore either. Former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio is taking their place. It's fitting since he played the same venue, on the same date, exactly 10 years earlier. In fact, Rhino just released that 1995 Phish concert on CD.

Allen Toussaint Benefit Shows | Filmmaker Kills Self

Allen Toussaint "Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer" Allen Toussaint is playing New Orleans (Katrina) benefit shows at Joe's Pub in NYC on December 30th, January 15th, February 19th, and March 12th, 2006. Tickets @ Telecharge.

In sadder, but very related news, filmmaker Stevenson J. Palfi shot himself Dec. 14 at his home. "He had been severely depressed after Hurricane Katrina damaged most of his property and possessions.....At the time of his death, Palfi was in the final stages of production on a feature-length program about Toussaint titled 'Songwriter, Unknown.' He had been working on the film for more than 15 years."

Misshapes are an indie band?

"INDIE band the MisShapes are no longer the house deejays for Susanne Bartsch's Tuesday night party at Happy Valley. At last week's Toy Drive for children with HIV/AIDS, the club's owners kicked the trio out of the disco-ball deejay booth - to the delight of a disgruntled crowd after the group behaved extremely poorly. "They were completely out of control," said our spy. "They had 35 people in the booth with them, spilling drinks all over the equipment. The music was undeniably bad and went off every 30 minutes until they were finally asked to leave." " [Page 6] (thx Sean)

Happy Hanukkah | Matisyahu, Pitchfork & The Voice

VILLAGE VOICE | 12/21/05

"...But the leading new Jewish contender for pop's next big bang is Matisyahu, a figure attracting almost as many rude bwoys as yeshiva boychiks. His sold-out September 8 Webster Hall concert was full of surreal and evocative equations...."

Read "Hanukkah Outrocks Christmas" at the Village Voice

AND...
* I shouldn't of procrastinated this post so long, because now the Voice's "Hanukkah Musical Time Line '05" is just about out of date.

* Ryan Schreiber at Pitchfork gains ironic cool points for dissing Matisyahu by printing something the singer of the Bravery said in that article in the Guardian.

* Yo La Tengo are blogging their Hanukkah shows.

* Matisyahu has a new video and a whole bunch of 2006 tour dates that were just announced.

Sufjan Stevens & Damien Rice playing 2006 Tibet House Concert

"As always, artistic director Philip Glass is gathering an amazing line-up of artists for the concert. The show presents well-known performers from around the world and features unique collaborations between them. To date, confirmed artists include Philip Glass, award-winning composer, well known for his gripping melodies which enchant listeners worldwide; Laurie Anderson, another long-time favorite of the Benefit Concert, who will be gracing the stage with her wildly creative musical talent; Damien Rice, an amazing artist who will be performing for the first time at the event, whose haunting and melodic music can be heard on the soundtrack of the movie Closer, in the title song, “The Blower’s Daughter”; Sufjan Stevens, another newcomer to the show, a talented, intelligent artist whose work brims with heart-wrenching melodies and orchestration; and singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer Allen Toussaint, one of America’s greatest musical treasures and a New Orleans native who has had a tremendous influence on American music reaching deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theater, blues, and jazz.

There will be more artists performing at the show so check the website regularly as all new updates will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. As many of you may already know, there is a wonderful reception after the concert, where the artists, honorary chair, and all of the benefit concert package ticket holders congregate for a buffet dinner party. Tibet House looks forward to seeing you at Carnegie Hall on March 1st, 2006."

Ultramagnetic MC's @ Knitting Factory NYC Tonight

Ultramagnetic MCs "The year 1986 was a special time for hip-hop, with people like KRS One, MC Shan and Rakim defining the young genre. But there was also a lesser known crew called the Ultramagnetic MC’s (featuring Kool Keith, T.R. Love, Ced Gee and DJ Moe Love) who dropped the classic ‘Ego Trippin’/Funky Potion’ 12 inch, featuring an otherworldly approach to rhyming that made it an instant classic, leading, by all accounts, to a new style of rap. Well, here they are, reunited, with some new additions to the group" [It's the L Magazine Pick of the Day]

A Mix Tape by Richard from Burnside Project | MP3s

Richard (aka Pocket) from Burnside Project sent out an MP3 mix tape for the holidays. I asked if he would mind presenting it as guest post on this site. He thought it was a good idea, so here's his letter followed by the mix....

Richard from Burnside Project

2005 was the year I became rather obsessed with rock and roll again (after a bit of a hiatus.) I soaked up the BritRock invasion, caught more live shows than usual and drove to Montreal to catch my first-ever U2 concert (wow).

These are my 15 favorite songs discovered in 2005. Not all were released in 2005, but you should all hear them anyway. I did some editing for your enjoyment. Throw it on your iPod or burn yourself a CD.

If you like what you hear, go buy the albums. Most of these artists need your support (ok, maybe not U2 but...)

Happy Holidays
- Richard.

DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE MIX AS A ZIP FILE or track by track...

DISCOVERIES 2005 (MP3s)
01) the national - baby, we'll be fine
02) redjetson - stay comfortable
03) the mfa - the difference it makes (superpitcher remix)
04) appareil - i will betray you

Nellie McKay Leaves Label | Label Not Releasing Album

Monday I reported that Nellie McKay was unhappy with Columbia/Sony's decision to release a shorter version of her next CD, and that Pitchfork reported that she won the dispute with the label. Well, that wasn't totally true because now the LA Times is reporting that Nellie is releasing the album on her own AND that she has " split with the label"

"To be on our own now, it does make things a lot easier," she said. "We're thinking … we'll probably put it on the Internet first sometime in January and then coordinate the [conventional] release around 'Threepenny,' maybe in February." A Columbia spokeswoman said Monday that the label had no comment.

By "Threepenny", she means The Threepenny Opera that she'll be starring in along with Alan Cumming and Edie Falco on Broadway. Oops, strike Edie.

Chris Thile Chris Thile is a musician's musician with a music fan's sense of fun.

The mandolinist for hit alt-bluegrass group Nickel Creek recently moved to New York and has started a side project with four other accomplished musicians (on guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle - a pair of them from southern jammers Leftover Salmon). Privately, they're putting together a serious, multi-part suite; publicly, they're having a lot of fun. The group played its first show ever at The Living Room last month to a packed-to-overflowing room, mixing originals, standards, and inspired covers (Radiohead's "Morning Bell," Wilco's "Poor Places"). I personally don't know blue from grass, but thought the show was amazing; the room's collective jaw was on the floor.

Hopefully, this will turn into a monthly residency. They're back again tonight (Dec 22, 2005) with two shows (10PM and 11:15PM). Tix are $12 and are here.

Listen to Thile's "other band": Music Cherry posted Nickel Creek's cover of Britney Spears' Toxic, and here's their Grammy-nominated instrumental Scotch & Chocolate (mp3)

Tapes 'n Tapes & The best of Gorilla vs Bear

TAPES 'N TAPES (photo via How was the show)
Tapes 'N Tapes

Tapes 'n Tapes are the perfect example of a band that I first heard of on a music blog. Gorilla vs. Bear (GVB) is the perfect example of such a music blog.

It all started on November 3rd when a post on Music for Robots led to a post on Gorilla vs. Bear. He wrote: "...So if you take anything away from this post, it should be that Tapes 'n Tapes is really, really awesome, and that if Music for Robots says a band is good, they probably are...."

AND HE POSTED THESE THREE TRACKS (MP3s)
Insistor
Cowbell
Omaha

The same three tracks have since appeared on Sixeyes and the Rock Insider ranked their album called The Loon #21 on his best albums of the year list. They almost made MOKB's list. And just 20 days after GVB first posted about them, he named them #15 on his top 50 albums of 2005 list (yes, he posted his list WAY early). He also posted a lot of other lists...

Gorilla vs Bear

GORILLA VS BEAR LISTS
* Top 50 Albums of 2005
* Best Songs of 2005
* Favorite Live shows of 2005
* Favorite EPs of 2005
* Top 5 Arcade Fire shows he saw this year

SO back to Tapes 'N Tapes: I noticed they have some NYC shows coming up - three to be exact. (note: I also just noticed that JERRY YETI ALSO TOOK NOTICE OF THIS)

Mike Ladd playing the Kitchen - NYC

"Rapper, musician, and hip-hop conceptualist, Mike Ladd pushes the boundaries of experimental hip-hop with his political and sonic explorations, which he describes as “post-futurist soul music”. Accompanied by a crew of MCs and musicians, Ladd performs songs from his acclaimed Since Infesticons/Majesticons trilogy of albums. This series is based on Ladd’s invented sci-fi narrative that chronicles a fictitious rap battle over hip-hop’s future fought between two rival factions, represented alternatively as the assimilated “commercial mainstream” and the rebellious “underground contingent”. The evening also includes the New York-debut of new tracks from the final trilogy installment, Domesticons."

The Changes @ Mercury Lounge

The Changes from Chicago were in town to play three shows. I caught the third one at Mercury Lounge Saturday night (Dec 17, 2005). "Smooth" comes to mind when trying to describe their show, and a search of their press page does in fact turn up three instances of the word "smooth". Their mostly catchy (smooth) pop songs bring me back to the 80's. Central Village and Underrated Blog were there too.

Nellie McKay vs Columbia Records | Nellie Wins

Nellie Mckay

Nellie McKay has a new album coming out on Columbia Records on January 3, 2006. At a recent show in California, "the 20-year-old singer, known for her sophisticated pop-cabaret songs, social activism and emotional demeanour, told the audience that she wants her upcoming album, Pretty Little Head, to contain 23 songs and run 65 minutes, but that the label plans to release a 16-song, 48-minute version. She encouraged her fans to write to Columbia in protest, and spelled out the e-mail address of Columbia Records Group Chairman Will Botwin. After berating an audience member who told her to stop talking and sing, McKay appeared to break down in tears...." [The Star Online]

AND: Nellie won.

Odetta playing free afternoon show Wednesday

You might remember Odetta from the Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home. Her song "The Waterboy" even appears on the soundtrack. in 2000, a remastered version of her cover album, "Odetta sings Dylan" was released on CD. For more Odetta, try "The Essential Odetta".

Her bio describes her as "one of the most important and influential artists of the last century, Odetta was the first solo woman performer to tour the world singing blues, jazz and protest songs while telling the stories of America’s southern experience." Wednesday at 12:30 PM at Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, she'll be singing "selections of folk songs and African-American spirituals celebrating the holiday season from her new album, Gonna Let It Shine, A Concert For The Holidays." Free Springsteen Tribute Show w/ The National & more

On January 14, 2006, the 6th annual New York Guitar Festival kicks off at the World Financial Center Winter Garden with a free gala concert honoring Bruce Springsteen's Landmark 1982 album, Nebraska

Performers:

---

The New York Guitar Festival 2006 is honoring Bruce Springsteen's 1982 Nebraska album with a free gala concert under the glass atrium of the World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, Saturday, January 14, at 8:00pm.

Entitled The Nebraska Project, this 25th anniversary celebration of the classic Bruce Springsteen album features on one stage a distinctive roster of singer-songwriters, bands and instrumentalists. The Nebraska Project opens this year's New York Guitar Festival.

Performing their own arrangements of one of the ten Nebraska songs are Laura Cantrell, Dan Zanes, Vernon Reid, Mark Eitzel, Michelle Shocked, Meshell Ndegeocello, The National, Chocolate Genius, Marc Ribot, Martha Wainwright, Jesse Harris, Kevn Kinney, Lenny Kaye, Gary Lucas and Harry Manx.

"Sometimes a recording artist's demo versions of songs are more brilliant than the final studio product. Nebraska is one of those moments in music history," said David Spelman, Artistic Director of the New York Guitar Festival. In 1982, Springsteen chose to release the demo versions of his newest songs, recorded with only acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica, and vocals, as his sixth album, Nebraska. The rest is history. www.brucespringsteen.net

Bad Brains w/ John Joseph (Cro-Mags) playing CBGB in '06

Bad Brains "The Bad Brains were an American all-black hardcore punk and reggae band, originally formed in Washington, DC in 1977. They are considered pioneers of hardcore punk." [Wikipedia]

"John 'Bloodclot' Joseph is the former roadie for the Bad Brains; an early 80s hardcore band. He joined the navy when he was 17, but quit it 6 months later to focus on music. He was a victim of violence in the past. Joseph went on to fame as the lead singer of the Cro-Mags; a NYC hardcore band that is credited with starting the Krishna-core movement that bridged the gapo between straight edge and traditional hardcore music. He now works in association with Krishna movements to build Hare Krishna temples and has action in his vegetarian catering business." [Wikipedia]

Bad Brains "featuring John Joseph" are playing two shows at CBGB - February 24 & 25, 2006. No tickets yet. This is a lot more interesting than the club's New Years Eve show.

Wilderness played & will play again @ Pianos

I have yet to see Wilderness play live. That includes missing both of their opening sets for Explosions in the Sky @ Bowery Ballroom. It looks like my next chance is at Pianos on January 12th, 2006 with Lolita Bras and "very special guests".. It doesn't look like tickets are on sale yet, or any other dates have been announced.

Explosions in the Sky @ Bowery Ballroom

I unfortunately missed all three Explosions in the Sky shows at Bowery Ballroom this month. Everyone I talked to said they were amazing. Luckily, Bradley came down from Boston to, not only see one of the shows, but record it and post the MP3s.

Bradley also took the above photo. More show reviews at Ear Farm, Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con, and Friends Forever

The Wrens & Nada Surf & MORE - Benefit Show @ KF

You probably know the Wrens are playing a few shows including the Onion Holiday Party @ Bowery Ballroom and that Nada Surf is on a much bigger tour with Rogue Wave, but you might not know that both bands are also playing an all day benefit concert at Knitting Factory in NYC on Sunday January 15, 2006 (tickets) along with:

Breakup Breakdown, Hopewell, Langhorne Slim, Maplewood, Koester, Freshkills, Stalkers, Ar Duvall, Leaders, The Redcoats Are Coming!, Cordova, Goodnight Gunfight, Heads Up Display, Class, Parts and Labor, Antonius Block, The Choke, Julia Marvel, The Dead Betties, The Vibration, Violator, Estevez, Poorboy Johnson and the Goddamn Rattlesnakes

The show is an ALL DAY, ALL AGES event, with THIRTY BANDS on ALL THREE STAGES at the historic KNITTING FACTORY in New York City. The talent ranges from indie legends like the Wrens and Nada Surf, to emerging alt.country stars like Langhorne Slim, and the heaviest hitters in the New York underground and indie scene. Whether you like experimental, heavy rock, or disco, you will find something you love on one of the stages.
Other forms of entertainment throughout the day will include a kissing booth (kiss the rock star of your dreams!), a tarot card reader, a bake sale, and an all-day raffle with valuable prizes. The first thirty people through the door will get a special gift basket.

Artists live in a state of economic peril, often living from paycheck to paycheck, without health insurance or a safety net. It’s estimated that artists and arts organizations throughout the Gulf region lost more than $82 million in equipment, studio space, venues, and other resources vital to make art--and to make a living.

The Relief Fund is helping artists throughout the south rebuild their lives—and we want to help them!

'Morrisey Park' Bar Closing

Morrisey Park is closing. They sent out this letter...

----

Many of you have already heard, but to those who haven't:

The Morrisey Park Era. Is. Over.

(Are you happy, Mr. Bloomberg? Anti-Nightlife Crusaders, can you keep clinging to your dream of a rustic, noiseless existence--in the middle of focking New York City?!)

Yes, Morrisey Park is closing its doors after this week. It's a wrap. Time to move on. Keep it moving to the K. I. M.

That being said, I wanted to invite everybody to celebrate and pour 40s (metaphorically, of course) for our last party. Our last night.

This Saturday, Dec. 17th, 2005.

Rob Swift (ROB SWIFT!) is dropping by for a final guest spot. Special guest appearances by Jer2, Empanadamn, DJ Parler, Moe Choi...and oh so much more.

I also wanted to thank everybody for their support of Morrisey Park. I hope everybody has enjoyed coming through to the spot. It's been quite an experience. Ah the memories.

Like when our favorite Rick James contemporaries (no joke) busted out their bass guitars, cuz they felt like it. Or like when peeps sported the coolest protective eye-wear behind the bar ever. Or the coolest protective bike helmets ever. Or the most phallic head gear ever. Or like when sisters be chiznillin' (awesome).

Or like when patrons decided, no, the bathroom is right here. Not there. Right *HERE*.

Well here's to one last night of good times.

----

(thx Bill)

Tonic, Scenic, & Rothko Raided, Dark Room reopened | Pacha

"...Hanging at Pacha you'd never know that below 14th Street, the battle between the residents, bars, and police had just been amped up another notch. The weekend of December 2, to hear one witness tell it, Avenue B looked like a zoo. Police trotted up and down the block on horses, a giant police van parked outside Le Souk, and the men in blue set up a checkpoint, carding drivers. One witness counted 16 or so cops between East 3rd and East 2nd. And more L.E.S. bars, including Scenic, Rothko, and Niagara, were visited over the week by precinct police and the nightlife task force (MARCH—Multi-Agency Response to City Hotspots)......It was rumored that Tonic got a cabaret violation for its allegedly unlicensed basement, but calls to the club were not returned......" Neutral Milk Hotel demos...Continued | Hawk & a Hacksaw

I last reported that Shannon was waiting for permission from Jeff Mangum to continue posting the lost NMH tracks. She got permission. According to YANP, she even posted a new song already which, according to her, has since been temporarily taken down.

In the meantime, Pitchfork reviewed one of the tracks and Harmonium Music reviewed five of them.

And in slightly related news, ex-NMH drummer Jeremy Barnes is performing as A Hawk and a Hacksaw at Mo Pitkin's in NYC Friday night (Dec 16, 2005).

Longwave Dropped from RCA

Longwave

longwave has been dropped by RCA records. here's a note on longwave's message board from steve, the lead singer/guitarist:

--

hi guys

yes it is true. to explain would take a long time and would probably be
very boring.......as for the shows, there were a lot that fell through for
money reasons, and a lot for cancellations by the bands we were playing
with. aside from the couple of shows close to home we just did there will
be no more for a while. we are working on new songs and we need to figure
out who will be putting out longwave records in the future. once we know
more about that we will be playing again. thanks a lot...................

Goldfrapp @ Nokia Theatre, NYC | pics

Last Monday night (December 5th, 2005), I checked out Goldfrapp at the Nokia Theatre in NYC. It was a fun show and their only U.S performance this time around. They'll be back for a proper tour when their album is released in March.

Goldfrapp @ The Nokia Theatre

"Alison Goldfrapp, who leads Goldfrapp, makes it easy to mistake her for a lightweight electropop act. Goldfrapp's current album, 'Supernature' (Mute) - a hit in Europe, though not due for an American release until March - is full of synthesizer hooks and come-hither lyrics. At the Nokia Theater on Monday night, in Goldfrapp's only United States performance this year, disco lights flashed as Ms. Goldfrapp sang lines like 'I need la la la la la la/ I need ooh la la la la' or 'You're my No. 1/ I'm like a dog to get you.'" [The NY Times]

Goldfrapp @ The Nokia Theatre

"...The band were accompanied on five songs in the set by a pair of dancers who performed choreographed moves in different fetish suits for each tune. (Wolf masks and bikinis for "Train," silver latex robot suits for "Slide In," disco-ball horse heads and tutus with horsey tails for "Ride A White Horse," etc.) It's a brilliantly designed spectacle for sure, but the songs are still the most impressive thing about the show.... [Fluxblog]

Goldfrapp @ The Nokia Theatre

"....The fans on the floor were definitely in high spirits (either from the marijuana or four cups of Heineken) and the people at the front staked their claim way before 8PM. I read in Arjan's blog that he felt the fans weren't responding well to some of Goldfrapp's songs. I believe it was the opposite. Some people can disagree with this, but from where I was standing, Alison was definitely feeling the energy from the crowd...." [Digital Music World]

Fiona Apple @ Nokia Theatre, NYC | Reviews & Pics

Fiona Apple @ Nokia Theatre

Last night (Dec 11, 2005) Fiona Apple played the Nokia Theatre in NYC. As you can sort-of see in the above and below Getty Images, she was sporting the latest Jawa fashion.

She spent about half the time behind the piano, and the other half singing and violent dancing front-and-center at the mic. Full band. No Jon Brion. No Roseland-like incidents. Very enthusiastic, sing-along crowd. I hope she comes back soon. For a more detailed review and setlist, check Fluxblog, and even more at Manic Mess.

"Liverpool and New York -- two cities forever associated with John Lennon -- are the focal points for bittersweet celebrations of the life and death of the former Beatle." [CNN International]

If I was home in NYC right now (which I'm not), I'd consider visiting Central Park tonight. According to Gothamist, "A moment of silence will be held at both the time he was shot (10:50 pm) and his time of death (11:15pm). People have been protesting the 1am curfew of the park on this night for several years, however, authorities still plan to stick to the curfew tonight."

Update on the unreleased Neutral Milk Hotel Demos

Shannon writes on her blog, "wow. this whole posting of the rare songs thing has been really interesting. I went from mostly anonymous to being on the front page of both Pitchfork and Tiny Mix Tapes (in addition to many blogs, lots of which I already read regularly) in just a matter of 24 hours or so. Very surreal to say the least. ...Now let me tell you this. I've just asked a mutual friend of mine and Jeff's to contact Jeff and get permission for me to post the other songs. (This person is much closer to Jeff than I ever have been, and he volunteered to do so, ...an offer I quickly accepted). I don't want to do anything else without making sure it's okay with him. I really should have asked him before ever posting ANY of this, and I regret not doing so....."

Nick Sylvester and Pitchfork today declared Love is All's Nine Times That Same Song "Best New Music" with an 8.7 rating. "What's the stat, 99% of all songs are love songs? And what's the other, 99% of all love songs make me want to slit my face? Swedish indie pop group Love Is All admit as much in their bandname and album title."

Loose Record / Levy show @ Fat Baby Raided

Firemen raided a Loose Record party that Levy were playing at Fat Baby on the Lower East Side Friday night. (Dec 2, 2005)

"...then took off to the L.E.S. bars with cheryl and her friend margot. we also got shut out of the loose record party featuring bands levy and end of the world because the cops and fire department barred the door at fat baby for going over capacity[74]. it was ridiculous, because myself and serkan the loose programmer were shut out of our own party..." [lucky is coming your way]

"...I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw full-suited firemen charge into Fat Baby on Friday. The venue has been open two months and already has citations galore. It was packed on Friday, but by no means unbearable. I could still walk around. By bringing in that many firemen and police officers, it only congested it more..." [The Underrated]

"...Later in the night, New York’s finest bar-busters busted up the party. The firemen came in and more or less shut the place down by not letting anyone enter or reenter. I guess the owner had a lot of violations, and it was pretty hazardous -in theory- to occupy the space. One could interpret this as that I was endangering my life for rock and roll...." Lady Sovereign Fiasco in Philadelphia

The first time Lady Sovereign played Knitting Factory in NYC, she was supposedly suffering from McDonalds food poisoning. This time around she played a successful show and joked that she only eats Burger King now. The next night at Silk City in Philly didn't go so well. The sound wasn't working properly so she walked off the stage after only playing one song. The sold-out crowd was not happy at all.

Not Happy, Not Happy, and Not Happy.

Lady Sov sent a message to fans via a message board:

To all the fans who attended....
We want to clarify something about Sov's show last night in Philadelphia...the promoter has issued a public apology and refunds to anyone that wants them. He takes full responsibility for what happened as far as the show went. Basically, he had gotten the equipment from a place he had never rented from before, and it ended up being stotally ub-standard. She literally could not hear herself on stage. An example of the problems is we had taken all the DJ equipment from the UK and the promoter hadn't even provided a transistor for transferring the equipment to a US power supply, so equipment was blowing out on stage, you cannot perform under such circumstances. All the equipment had been agreed weeks before with the promoter and should never have been a problem supplying.

Sov asked me to post a message from her: " last night was a massive disappointment, I was well excited to be laying Philadelphia for the first time. The equipment in the club was shit, I could not hear anything on stage and even though I tried to roll with it by doing 2 tracks it just got worse and worse to the point I couldn't continue like that, it's not fair i was well up for it".

Sov will come back to Philadelphia soon, and perform again, next time hopefully without any of these problems.

I'd be pissed too.

Stefan Lockdown | RIP | DJ, Party Promoter

Stefan LockdownStefan Lockdown

Stefan Lockdown I didn't know Stefan personally, though I did see him out all the time. The picture above (he's the one with the hat) was just taken after he won a PAPER nightlife award.

"...The award goes to Stefan Lockdown and Spencer Product. Stefan raises his fist and leans into the mic, joking, 'I'd just like to thank everyone for giving us the MisShapes Award'...." [Vilage Voice]

"NYC-based DJ Stefan Lockdown, co-host of the beloved Tuesday weekly staple We Bite! party at Happy Ending, and winner of the PAPER Nightlife Award for Best New DJ along with other We Bite! host Spencer Product, passed away on Wednesday night. The cause of death, as far as I know, was a heroin overdose." [Shit Parade]

* LNP Bronques remembers Stefan
* Stefan's MySpace page

He died on Wednesday November 30, 2005. The funeral was Sunday. A note urging people not to use heroin, or at least to use it responsibly, was floating around MySpace with the funeral details. Someone forwarded it to me. Here it is:

-----

If you're still using, just think about the way his fucking death made you feel, and if you're not going to quit, AT LEAST FUCKING BE RESPONSIBLE. There has been no heroin related tragedy in our circle of friends that could not have been prevented with a little common sense and maybe 5 minutes on google. But if you're too lazy to do that, here, I'll do it for you. The harm reduction center is on 25 Allen street between Hester and Canal, theres a needle exchange there where you can get cleans and they've recently started giving away loaded Narcotan syrenges. Please, if you're going to use, get one. They're free, its an opiate blocker, in case of an overdose you can use it to perhaps save your own life, but more likeley save someone else's. Aside from all that, use common sense, if you haven't used in awhile guess what? your tolerance goes down, use you're old dose and you're probably going to die. You can always do more, you can never do less.

Memorial:
Stefan's memorial service is going to be held in Washington Ct on this coming sunday 3m at the Washington Memorial Church. If you were a friend of his please make it out here. This would mean the world to his mother and brother.

The church that has been decided apon is a bit stuffy/ not what I think Stefan would have wanted, or maybe he would laughingly.. Please bring cards/ music/ anything to make this day more him.

also working on getting a place togethor for afterwards/ a bit more social/ play some of his music. ect

Lady Sovereign @ Knitting Factory, NYC | pics

I finally caught Lady Sovereign at Knitting Factory Wednesday night (Nov 30, 2005). I'm happy I did.

Lady Sovereign @ Knitting Factory

FADER has a good review, "For the rest of her mini US tour behind the Vertically Challenged EP, Sov will just be rapping while DJ Frampster plays the tracks, as she's always done. But for this NYC date, she was backed by a band. And not just any band, but some full-on rap rockers, replete with dreadlocked 7-string slinger and a bassist with a brimmed watch cap..."

Page France @ Sin-e

Page France has some really good songs, and there were a lot of times during their relatively short set at Sin-e in NYC Tuesday night (Nov 29, 2005) that I was really enjoying those songs. Other times I was a bit distracted by the Jesus-retreat-campfire-like aspect of their performance. On the other hand, "Jesus" is one of the best songs live and on album. Listen to it at their PureVolume page. I was about to compare their religiosity to Sufjan Stevens, but then I noticed Pitchfork already did in their 7.8 review of Hello, Dear Wind.

I felt a little bad. The band got caught in some crazy accident traffic while driving from Maryland to NYC for this show. It took them like eight hours instead of four. They were tired and that probably affected things a little.

Konono No. 1 @ SOBs, NYC | pics

Konono No. 1 played three NYC shows during their first ever tour of America. The first one was at Joe's Pub. The second one was at SOB's the next day. The third one was right after the second one. These pictures are from the third one (Nov 17, 2005). I think their almost 2 hour set (with encore) was only four songs. Though instructed to dance even more, a lot of people were dancing, especially when the music started to resemble what we typically consider dance music.

Konono No1 @ SOBs

"SOBs was jammed with my ethno-curious peers: the kind of kids that sniff disdainfully at ESPN culture but follow alt-sports like English Premier League. And looking around me I was faced with the confronting question: when did the back-country woodsman beard come back in fashion?" [Moist Works]

"They call it Congolese Bozombo trance music, but when leader Mawangu Mingiedi founded the group 25 years ago he was intent on furthering a tribal ancestral tradition, not filling western dance floors." [Boston Herald]

"The most astonishing thing about that band is the bass, and although I knew it was made by likembe, I had expected it to be a big likembe, one you had to sit on or something. I spent a full ten minutes of the show trying to figure out where the bass sound could possibly be coming from before finally realizing that yes, it was actually coming out that tiny handheld thumb piano" [Doveman]

Konono No1 @ SOBs

"To hear an approximation of what this live Konono N°1 show sounded like, check out this 1978 Konono N°1 recording that Christopher Porter kindly posted on his blog The Suburbs Are Killing Us. Then go cop yourself a copy of Congotronics (out on Crammed Discs), which Ryko is now distributing domestically to retail outlets big (Amazon) and small (CD Alley)....And look, now we even have a Congotronics 2 CD/DVD comp to look forward to" [Tuba City]

Andrew Kenny on NYC & Arcade Fire (sort of) & stuff

"That's what music is in New York. It was kind of good going to Europe and the last couple weeks playing shows that are maybe a little bit smaller but kind of on par with what we play in the States, but people were really excited to see us. It's like, we know we don't have a huge following, but we're an important band to a small group of people and it's cool to connect with people like that, and just because you're not the Arcade Fire at the Bowery -- like oh my God, what happened, I couldn't get into the show, it's a huge fiasco! What, you're not on the guest list? You know, it's not always like that. Sometimes we can be not cool and still appeal to people. I guess it's an important thing to remember that it's really hard living in New York. I'm sure you can appreciate this as well. " [PopMatters talked to Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set]

Kudu, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Annie | Win Tickets

annie Tonight is the Annie / Secret Machines benefit show at Webster Hall. It's the show TV On the Radio dropped off of. In their place is Anton from Brian Jonestown Massacre. If Webster Hall holds five times as many people as Pianos, then that's potentially five times more hecklers which might mean five times more of this.

Saturday night is the Annie show at Rothko. Kudu is opening. If you can't stay up late enough to catch Kudu at Nublu on Tuesdays, this is your chance. And if you need another excuse to go, I have a pair of free tickets to give away. If you want them, e-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Annie) and let me know some artists you don't think I post enough about. Same terms as the Goldfrapp contest. I'll pick a winner at noon on Friday (Dec 2, 2005).
