Devendra Banhart plays for Lindsay Lohan & Ashley Olsen @ Fashion Show

Karl Lagerfeld, Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Olson" Karl Lagerfeld pulled out all the stops and then some to present Chanel's latest pre-fall collection on Wednesday night. First, there was the matter of the show's location: The 57th Street flagship was shut down for two days beforehand. Then there was the carefully choreographed event itself, with nouveau folkie Devendra Banhart playing live for an audience that included Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Olsen, Diane Kruger, and more socials than you could shake a quilted bag at..... Indie Bands Jump on Brand Wagon

"Bob Mould is best known for his 1980s punk band Husker Du. Now 45, the guitarist and vocalist sells his new music primarily by touring and through his Web site. But it's a grind. So Mould was thrilled when he was contacted recently by the music supervisor for the hit Fox show 'The OC,' who wanted to use a recording from Mould's most recent album in an upcoming episode..." 25th Anniversary of John Lennon's Death | MP3

"Liverpool and New York -- two cities forever associated with John Lennon -- are the focal points for bittersweet celebrations of the life and death of the former Beatle." [CNN International]

If I was home in NYC right now (which I'm not), I'd consider visiting Central Park tonight. According to Gothamist, "A moment of silence will be held at both the time he was shot (10:50 pm) and his time of death (11:15pm). People have been protesting the 1am curfew of the park on this night for several years, however, authorities still plan to stick to the curfew tonight."

Update on the unreleased Neutral Milk Hotel Demos

Shannon writes on her blog, "wow. this whole posting of the rare songs thing has been really interesting. I went from mostly anonymous to being on the front page of both Pitchfork and Tiny Mix Tapes (in addition to many blogs, lots of which I already read regularly) in just a matter of 24 hours or so. Very surreal to say the least. ...Now let me tell you this. I've just asked a mutual friend of mine and Jeff's to contact Jeff and get permission for me to post the other songs. (This person is much closer to Jeff than I ever have been, and he volunteered to do so, ...an offer I quickly accepted). I don't want to do anything else without making sure it's okay with him. I really should have asked him before ever posting ANY of this, and I regret not doing so....."

The Pogues "The band specialised in Irish folk music, often playing with the energy of the punk rock scene from which several of the members had their roots. Loose Record / Levy show @ Fat Baby Raided

Firemen raided a Loose Record party that Levy were playing at Fat Baby on the Lower East Side Friday night. (Dec 2, 2005)

"...then took off to the L.E.S. bars with cheryl and her friend margot. we also got shut out of the loose record party featuring bands levy and end of the world because the cops and fire department barred the door at fat baby for going over capacity[74]. it was ridiculous, because myself and serkan the loose programmer were shut out of our own party..." [lucky is coming your way]

"...I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw full-suited firemen charge into Fat Baby on Friday. The venue has been open two months and already has citations galore. It was packed on Friday, but by no means unbearable. I could still walk around. By bringing in that many firemen and police officers, it only congested it more..." [The Underrated]

"...Later in the night, New York’s finest bar-busters busted up the party. The firemen came in and more or less shut the place down by not letting anyone enter or reenter. I guess the owner had a lot of violations, and it was pretty hazardous -in theory- to occupy the space. One could interpret this as that I was endangering my life for rock and roll...." Lady Sovereign Fiasco in Philadelphia

The first time Lady Sovereign played Knitting Factory in NYC, she was supposedly suffering from McDonalds food poisoning. This time around she played a successful show and joked that she only eats Burger King now. The next night at Silk City in Philly didn't go so well. The sound wasn't working properly so she walked off the stage after only playing one song. The sold-out crowd was not happy at all.

Not Happy, Not Happy, and Not Happy.

Lady Sov sent a message to fans via a message board:

To all the fans who attended....
We want to clarify something about Sov's show last night in Philadelphia...the promoter has issued a public apology and refunds to anyone that wants them. He takes full responsibility for what happened as far as the show went. Basically, he had gotten the equipment from a place he had never rented from before, and it ended up being stotally ub-standard. She literally could not hear herself on stage. An example of the problems is we had taken all the DJ equipment from the UK and the promoter hadn't even provided a transistor for transferring the equipment to a US power supply, so equipment was blowing out on stage, you cannot perform under such circumstances. All the equipment had been agreed weeks before with the promoter and should never have been a problem supplying.

Sov asked me to post a message from her: " last night was a massive disappointment, I was well excited to be laying Philadelphia for the first time. The equipment in the club was shit, I could not hear anything on stage and even though I tried to roll with it by doing 2 tracks it just got worse and worse to the point I couldn't continue like that, it's not fair i was well up for it".

Sov will come back to Philadelphia soon, and perform again, next time hopefully without any of these problems.

I'd be pissed too.

Stefan Lockdown | RIP | DJ, Party Promoter

Stefan LockdownStefan Lockdown

Stefan Lockdown I didn't know Stefan personally, though I did see him out all the time. The picture above (he's the one with the hat) was just taken after he won a PAPER nightlife award.

"...The award goes to Stefan Lockdown and Spencer Product. Stefan raises his fist and leans into the mic, joking, 'I'd just like to thank everyone for giving us the MisShapes Award'...." [Vilage Voice]

"NYC-based DJ Stefan Lockdown, co-host of the beloved Tuesday weekly staple We Bite! party at Happy Ending, and winner of the PAPER Nightlife Award for Best New DJ along with other We Bite! host Spencer Product, passed away on Wednesday night. The cause of death, as far as I know, was a heroin overdose." [Shit Parade]

* LNP Bronques remembers Stefan
* Stefan's MySpace page

He died on Wednesday November 30, 2005. The funeral was Sunday. A note urging people not to use heroin, or at least to use it responsibly, was floating around MySpace with the funeral details. Someone forwarded it to me. Here it is:

-----

If you're still using, just think about the way his fucking death made you feel, and if you're not going to quit, AT LEAST FUCKING BE RESPONSIBLE. There has been no heroin related tragedy in our circle of friends that could not have been prevented with a little common sense and maybe 5 minutes on google. But if you're too lazy to do that, here, I'll do it for you. The harm reduction center is on 25 Allen street between Hester and Canal, theres a needle exchange there where you can get cleans and they've recently started giving away loaded Narcotan syrenges. Please, if you're going to use, get one. They're free, its an opiate blocker, in case of an overdose you can use it to perhaps save your own life, but more likeley save someone else's. Aside from all that, use common sense, if you haven't used in awhile guess what? your tolerance goes down, use you're old dose and you're probably going to die. You can always do more, you can never do less.

Memorial:
Stefan's memorial service is going to be held in Washington Ct on this coming sunday 3m at the Washington Memorial Church. If you were a friend of his please make it out here. This would mean the world to his mother and brother.

The church that has been decided apon is a bit stuffy/ not what I think Stefan would have wanted, or maybe he would laughingly.. Please bring cards/ music/ anything to make this day more him.

also working on getting a place togethor for afterwards/ a bit more social/ play some of his music. ect

I finally caught Lady Sovereign at Knitting Factory Wednesday night (Nov 30, 2005). I'm happy I did.

Lady Sovereign @ Knitting Factory

FADER has a good review, "For the rest of her mini US tour behind the Vertically Challenged EP, Sov will just be rapping while DJ Frampster plays the tracks, as she's always done. But for this NYC date, she was backed by a band. And not just any band, but some full-on rap rockers, replete with dreadlocked 7-string slinger and a bassist with a brimmed watch cap..."
