Pitchfork published their top 50 singles 2005 today. Antony wins! Kelly Clarkson took the prize on the list with the same title at Stylus

From the paragraph above Pitchfork's list:
"Of course, the exclusion of non-single album tracks made staff favorites like Robyn's "Konichiwa Bitches", Beanie Sigel's "Purple Rain", and anything from SUFJAN STEVENS' ILLINOIS, among many others, ineligible. Fortunately, it all gets its due on the albums list, and everyone ends up happy.
hint, hint

I'll never really understand why their list is always so hip-hip heavy, especially the top 10. Maybe it's cause my exposure to more mainstream culture gets more and more limited, by I'll be the first to admit that I havent heard any of the hip hop singles, other than trapped in the closet.
Does anyone else find it odd that 'feel good inc.' was left out of the list? that had to be one of the most overplayed songs of the year, and one of the few that people from both the mainstream and hipster camps liked.
kelly clarkson rulez!!!!

the reason it's so hiphop heavey is simple - hip hop is a singles music...and all of those hip hop songs they highlighted are REALLY good. but where was Wait (Whisper Song) and Still Tippin' ?

Pfork always goes heavy on the hip-hop for singles b/c it's an indie rock site run by ppl who (theoretically, at least) know indie rock. A singles list is a lot less consequential than an albums list, so they'll throw out their nods to the obvious southern hip-hop trend on there rather than actually going out on a limb for the albums list. Pfork doesn't know hip-hop, so any substantive analysis will focus elsewhere.
And besides the radio factor, hip-hop is not any more singles music than rock - Three 6 and Juelz both put out work that spans the stretch of an album at least as much as most whatever-other-than-hip-hop albums have.
Just saying.

I think Wolf Parade is going to be #1. PF has to most to gain by placing them at the top.

if you ask me...
they are super predictable.

Sufjan will win. He wrote an entire album about Pitchfork's home state. Plus he's got God on his side.

When it comes to Pitchfork, nobody wins.

It's not gonna be clap your hands, cause the last three months for them has been mostly backlash.
Sufjan seems like a safe bet, but its tooo safe, which thus likely rules him out, cause the fork never really likes to follow the trend. they need to make a statement
my bet's on wolf parade cause it's awell liked debut album of a band that hasnt really gotten too much backlash, yet at same time doesnt seem like an obvious choice.
expect them or a way left field deerhoof pick.
