Nellie McKay Leaves Label | Label Not Releasing Album

Monday I reported that Nellie McKay was unhappy with Columbia/Sony's decision to release a shorter version of her next CD, and that Pitchfork reported that she won the dispute with the label. Well, that wasn't totally true because now the LA Times is reporting that Nellie is releasing the album on her own AND that she has " split with the label"

"To be on our own now, it does make things a lot easier," she said. "We're thinking … we'll probably put it on the Internet first sometime in January and then coordinate the [conventional] release around 'Threepenny,' maybe in February." A Columbia spokeswoman said Monday that the label had no comment.

By "Threepenny", she means The Threepenny Opera that she'll be starring in along with Alan Cumming and Edie Falco on Broadway. Oops, strike Edie.

A masterstroke in her gripping journey from near to total obscurity.

More shorter albums, please. Artists have an unnecessary urge to fill up nearly every second of a CD.

Low 40s, that's the sweet spot.

A better artist can go over 50 without losing the listener.

It's no surprise her label wanted to release a shorter version. Albums that wear our their welcome or lose their focus tend not to get good reviews and typically don't get good word of mouth.

Personally I don't think consumers have too much patience for long albums. Terrible attention spans.

I read or hear every week that albums are too long and that they're just one or two good songs and a bunch of filler. So why would an artist want to put out a long album when it's obvious there's a declining demand for them?

Replacing Edie Falco in 3Penny? Cyndi Lauper (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/96998.html).

Who would've made a very interesting Carmela Soprano.

// A better artist can go over 50 without losing the listener.

Which listener are you referring to? What... do you work at the label, you have an uncanny ability to just know what everybody wants. It's really quite amazing.

Listen, it's very simple... if your short attention span doesn't allow you to stick with an artist and for an entire hour - then by all means press pause and move on. But who the fuck are you to interject what the "listener" wants.

Peace

Amen to that Paxil. I would say that people like Coolfer give us good insight into what it must be like trying to discuss art with a recording industry greedy-ass mindless suit. The hilarious thing is that Sony/Columbia is sooo inane that they are letting a remarkable talent go - and are completely clueless. Oh, and Coolfer, I'm sure you will be dissappointed to know that the reviews I have seen are once again glowing. I pity Coolfers' attention span (no doubt accompanying his itty tiny brain). You ask why an artist would want to make a long album? Oh, I don't know, maybe they actually are wonderfully talented and have important ideas to express. God forbid the public be allowed access to such jems!

Go get em Nellie! As long as you have songs, I'll be listening!

I think nellie mckay is the best musician I have heard in years. Comparable to no other. Her music reassures my reality and soothes my soul. When the world seems cold and lonely, always know ya got me. Love Chris.

I've managed to save up roughly $74408 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
