"Confirming a rumor that has been floating around the indie world for weeks, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy revealed to Pitchfork this weekend that his band has indeed signed to Capitol Records."

"Even after we recorded [2003's] Her Majesty the Decemberists, it was pretty clear that we would probably be at a point after the next record that we would be moving on to something bigger."

And Capitol Records is just the sort of outfit that'd OK an 18-minute Tullesque EP based on an old Gaelic legend.

I do like these guys -- even if their last CD was a bit of a disappointment, their live show is great -- but everytime I hear them get all precious about how "We're just a little band writing songs about chimney sweeps!" I want to punch Meloy in the face. They should be careful not to look down; they might see shark.

Maybe if you took your head out of your ass and stopped listening to contrived and derivitive music you would realize that the Decemberists are brilliant musicians. They have interesting and intelligent lyrics and creative and complex songs. There is more to music than technical ability and accessibility.

Congrats to the band, we love them.

They were okay when I saw them at Southpaw back before they totally sold out and went mainstream. They are soooooooooooo over.

I am disappointed the Decemberists thought they needed to become like everyone else and join the system. They had everything they wanted, why market for money? Hello MTV. Goodbye the people that brought them there.

I am disappointed the Decemberists thought they had join the industry ruled marketing system that stiffles creativity. They had everything they wanted right? Money caused people to abandon their values. Hello MTV. Goodbye the people that brought them there.

Mainstream? Stupid comments like that make me wonder if half of you know what your talking about. Theres nothing wrong with signing to a major label. The process in the long run will help them get there music out. I don't think The Decemberists will ever "sell out" because they stay true to the music and continue to stand out with original elements that you can't find anywhere else.

"Goodbye the people that brought them there."

To whom are you referring? The indie label(s) that released their album up until now? Or their fans, who may have to compete with new Decemberists fans for concert tix and proximity to the band in the future? If it's the latter, I quote you George Michael, circa 1990:

All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me

this band actually does suck. sorry, their lyrics are original but so was Hitler's. doesn't mean its good. their shit is heartless, history book bs and Colin sings with a stupid nasally twang that no one from Portland has. I met him at a bar and he was a dick

His picture on the back of the album does make believe that he would be a dick in real life for some reason. I love the music, but am curious as to what he did to make him be a dick?
