Voodoo-EROS/Enlightened Family | A Record Label & Store 2

The Enlightened FAmily "Voodoo-EROS is a Brooklyn-based label founded by CocoRosie’s Bianca Casady. To celebrate the birth of her new venture, she has collected a series of previously unheard songs from friends, both famous and unknown. The Enlightened Family features two tracks from a sixteen-year old Devendra Banhart, a 1968 recording from British folk legend Vashti Bunyan, an instrumental recorded by Patrick Wolf on a desert island, two tracks from Diane Cluck, an old forgotten piano track from Sierra Casady, and two of the sisters’ side projects, Metallic Falcons and Island Folk Lore." [The Milk Factory]

Nomi is on the CD too. Antony isn't, but I think we can consider him a Voodoo-EROS associate as well.

* Listen to some EF songs here.

* Diane Cluck's new one on Voodoo-Eros too

THE STORE
Voodoo-EROS opened a store front on January 1st, 2006. "The shop will showcase artwork and music from their artist collective and extended family." It's located at 123 Ludlow between Delancey & Rivington in the LES, NYC.

The NY Times on "Best Of the Year" lists

"...Few critics know that better than the ones at Pitchfork, the influential indie-rock Web site, which published a year-end list as carefully compiled as a D.J. set, with the indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens in the top album slot. The Pitchfork list is a group effort, and since the site's CD reviews come with numerical ratings assigned by the writer, from 0.0 to 10.0, it's hard to ignore the discrepancies. For example, Wolf Parade, a band whose album was awarded 9.2, ranks behind LCD Soundsystem, which earned only 8.2...." [NY Times]

Your Favorite Musical Moments from 2005

For a recent contest, I asked you to tell me some of your favorite musical moments from 2005. Here are some of the answers I received. I'll be collecting/posting more over the next few days...

ARCTIC MONKEYS @ BOWERY BALLROOM
Arctic Monkeys @ Bowery Ballroom

hands down my musical moment of the year was being directly in front of the stage for the arctic monkeys bowery show, sweating out my feelings, screaming every lyric, dancing/fighting with all the riotously fantastic drunk brits in front for an hour and then walking up bowery in just a t-shirt and memories in the rain to cool down.
- Bill

JOSE GONZALEZ @ THE LIVNG ROOM
Jose Gonzalez @ The Livng Room

Seeing the first US Jose Gonzalez show at the Living Room in NYC
- Daniel

THE DECEMBERISTS @ INTONATION (via Pitchfork)
The Decemberists @ Intonation

for the favorite musical moment/concert/anything category, I'd have to go back to this past summer's Intonation Festival in the great city of Chicago. The Decemberists were closing out their amazing set (which was much more lively than I had ever imagined them being), and I was right at the front in the press pit, thanks to some photo passes. My friend nudged me and said I should take one of the tambourines. So as they're closing out with the song about the whale, I reached up and plucked it, stuck it in my backpack, and called it a night. As we drove back from Chicago, every time we would hit a speed bump or take a sharp turn, the faint jingle of my theft was heard. It was pretty funny.
- d

SUFJAN STEVENS @ BOWERY KATRINA BENEFIT
Sufjan Stevens @ Bowery Ballroom

My favorite concert moment of the year was at the katrina benefit with sufjan stevens and adam green - when sufjan started with REM's the one i love. When he started singing "this one goes out to the one I love" - the combination of the nature of the event and the song and his voice was simply moving. It was such a change from his previous shows at the bowery ballroom, and so appropriate at the same time.
- will

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT @ HARD ROCK CAFE (via Heartonastick)
Rocket From the Crypt @ Hard Rock Cafe

Half sad/Half amazing...the final Hot Snakes show at Bowery Ballroom and the final RFTC show at Hard Rock in Times Square...total underreported...totally the end of an era...totally blistering real rock and roll.

2) Morningwood do not have an album out in the UK. (When I saw an "import" on Amazon, I shouldn't of assumed it was from the UK. It's from Japan.)

Serena Maneesh playing more shows

As previously reported here and on Pitchfork, Serena Maneesh, the band from Norway that made Pitchfork's 29th favorite CD of 2005, are visiting NYC for the first time this month. They were originally playing one show. Now there are three:

1/20/06 Northsix in Brooklyn (tix)
1/21/06 Mercury Lounge (tix still on sale)
1/21/06 Free Soundfix instore @ 4PM

According to the original tour dates posted at Pitchfork, they also have a fourth NYC date already scheduled for March 8th at an undisclosed location. It's during their short U.S. tour that leads up to a March 15th SXSW appearance and continues on to California.

Jens Lekman | Oh You're So Silent

Jens Lekman I swear one of these days I'm going to write a 2005 recap/best-of post. In the meantime, I'm playing catch-up. In the process I've found another album I really love. Oh You're So Silent (a collection of music that came out on EPs) is my first introduction to Jens Lekman. I know that means I'm way late to the party. All Music says, "If you haven't heard Jens Lekman yet, you're missing out on one of the true pop geniuses of the early 2000s." That seems right. Sixeyes says, "Lekman would have made a great Tin Pan Alley tunesmith, or may one day make a great composer of Broadway show-stoppers." Now that I'm here, it's just unfortunate that I may not have the opportunity to see Jens play live for a long long time.

One last note: my love for this album is not unique at all.

Jens Lekman

Moby says Teany not Shutting Down (or is it or something)

hi,
contrary to some of the rumors that are floating around, teany isn't being shut down. we are going to close for a few weeks to revamp and re-model, but we're not shutting down. thanks for your interest, and happy new year.
-moby and kelly

>BUT, Gothamist updated their post again with this: "Jen: Spoke to Kelly Tisdale who said that teany will 'possibly' reopen. If that happens, it will be within a month, but it will not be under the same management (however, Kelly will still be there). She added that the tea beverage operation (that she and Moby are partners are in) is still going exist and that everything that's online is still available."

AND Newday, who cited Gothamist and quoted AM New York, wrote, "Co-owner Kelly Tisdale told amNewYork that they are 'closing based on money issues,' and once they sit down and rework the budget they hope to reopen within the month. 'We'll still be called Teany and we'll still be based on tea,' she said.

AND the NY Times says something about it too.

Portishead Update sort of

"Rumours are starting to grow about the long awaited third album from Portishead and a possible live festival appearance. Certain online record stores have a release date as early as February 2nd for the follow to 1997’s self titled second album and sites across the Atlantic are claiming that the duo will perform before The Strokes and Depeche Mode at this year’s Coachella festival in the US. The band confirmed early in 2005 that they were back in the recording studio and nearing the completion of their new album." [albumvote]

Morningwood & We are Scientists | About to Blow Up?

MorningwoodWe Are Scientists

Two majorly catchy, major label rock 'n roll bands from NYC are releasing CDs on January 10, 2006. Despite potentially bad Pitchfork reviews (UPDATE: Pitchfork already gave We are Scientists a 6.7), both Morningwood and We are Scientists will likely rise to fame in 2006.

* Get Morningwood @ Insound or @ Amazon
* Get We Are Scientists @ Amazon

SPINSPINSPIN

They'll probably land at least one SPIN cover each, and they'll likely graduate from Bowery Ballroom to, at least, Webster Hall. We are Scientists probably already have.

BOWERY BALLROOM SCHEDULE
1/11/06 - Morningwood w/ The Exit & Army of Me (tickets)
1/12/06 - We are Scientists w/ Oxford Collapse & Bishop Allen (SOLD OUT)

Morningwood

MORNINGWOOD'S STATS
* Pink is the New Blog declares "Morningwood is coming ... and you're gonna love them!"
* Stereogum is "Waking Up To Morningwood"
* Morningwood video was playing between bands at the MTVu Awards

We Are Scientists

WE ARE SCIENTISTS' STATS
* Indie Rock bloggers love them
* Headlined SPIN's recent "Year in Music" party @ Rothko (see here, here, here, & here)
* Already popular in the UK

This isn't a contest (nor a scientific evaluation), BUT if I was betting....I'd put my money on We are Scientists. Though sometimes accused of changing their sound to match what's hot, they're more often accused of not taking themselves too seriously. The cool kids like them like they like Franz Ferdinand and not the Killers. Girls like them. Brits like them. Most importantly, they're fun live and they write hits.

Morningwood seems less of a sure thing. Though they haven't released anything in the UK (meaning we don't know what the Brits think yet), I think girls like Morningwood. Unfortunately, you more often hear boys making fun of lead singer Chantel because she doesn't look like Gwen Stefani (or something like that). The 'take off your clothes' shtick won't last forever (especially when you're marketing to teenage girls), but I doubt image will be their problem; look at the CD cover and their pretty videos.

Someone in the comments wrote that Morningwood are already getting a lot of mainstream press. That's good news. I've always been a fan of their entergetic live show and was excited for them when they got signed. It wasn't until their publicists left a bad taste in my mouth by leaving phony comments that I lost some faith. My favorite comment reads, "...anyway, time to pick up where I left off and drink a bloody mary and get my day started. M-O, M-O-R, M-O-R-N-I-N-G, W-O-O-D! Sing it!"

(root root root for the home team...)

Christgau calls Antony the "Dud of the Month"

Robert Christgau The Village Voice never claimed to tie album reviews to their release date. They often make 'old' albums appear new, so I'm not too surprised that in this week's issue, dean of American rock critics, Robert Christgau got around to praising Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (released June 2005), Fiona Apple (October 4, 2005), Lady Sovereign (November 15, 2005), and Madonna (November 15, 2005). In fact, I kind of like it. It must help an album to get some ongoing press AND it probably helps to review an album after you've had ample time to listen to it, BUT to call Antony & The Johnson's I am a Bird Now "Dud of the Month" almost a full year after its release date just seems silly. They're talking about it at I Love Music.

Life of Agony split w/ Epic | Roadrunner 25th Reviews

"Reunited New York metallers LIFE OF AGONY have parted ways with Epic Records after releasing only one album through the label, informed sources have revealed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET....'Broken Valley' has sold 27,000 copies in the United States so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan."

COREY TAYLOR & KEITH CAPUTO @ NOKIA THEATRE
Corey Taylor & Keith Caputo @ Nokia Theatre

I missed the Roadrunner 25th Anniversary show at Nokia Theatre a few weeks ago. Billboard reviewed it. They said the Roadrunner house band played "music from Biohazard (whose Evan Seinfeld joined for 'Punishment'), Madball (with show host and Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta singing 'Set It Off') and Life Of Agony (featuring singer Keith Caputo revisiting 'River Runs Red')." One more thing I wished I could of seen was "the sole acoustic number" sung by Caputo and Corey Taylor (Slipknot). Metal Injection has a ton of pictures.

Stylus Magazine, not afraid of metal, gave the recent Roadrunner 25th CD a B+.

New York Magazine's 63rd Reason to Love New York: Because on a Random Saturday Night, The Arcade Fire Showed Up on a Street Corner, Strapped on Their Guitars, and Tore Through a Set of Cure, Pixies, and New Order Covers

There was literally fifteen people there, and everyone was freaking out, like completely freaking out." V2's The Mooney Suzuki | Secret Shows @ Sin-e

It was widely reported in September that The Mooney Suzuki signed to V2. Little Steven likes them. They played his party at the Hard Rock Cafe on New Years Eve. On January 10 & 17 (2006), they're playing "secret" shows at Sin-e in NYC as "The Patchwork Family". They want to try out some new material. Sin-e is a very small club. Tickets for the January 10th one are not-so-secretly on sale.

Strokes First Impressions of EarthKing Kong

Pitchfork handed down a 5.9 to the new Strokes album today. If 5.9 means take-it-or-leave-it, that's pretty much how I feel too. Playlouder LOVES it. Slant is also right in the middle. LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM @ AOL MUSIC. Buy First Impressions of Earth at Insound.

King Kong was awesome. See it while it's in the theaters. LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACK @ AOL MUSIC. Buy the CD at Amazon.

The Longcut

Raw and explosive, in support the band will make their debut appearances in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, having performed at this years SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX. The self-titled release contains six visceral, dance-based guitar tracks that whet the appetite for the band’s debut full-length, due here in the U.S. late Spring." [Filter]

White Rose Movement | Love is a Number | MP3

Though White Rose Movement's "Love is a Number" only scored #40 on Pitchfork's Top 50 Singles of 2005 list, it came in at a much more impressive #6 on Pitchfork editor-in-Chief Ryan Schreiber's personal list. In fact, when he first reviewed the track, he said it may "stand out as one of the era's definitive cuts," though he prefaced that by saying the band "won't likely amount to anything beyond this track."

I'm not totally sold on the band or the track yet, but we'll see in less than two weeks.

The Juan Maclean @ Avalon

"....And so on Friday night, the eve of New Year's Eve, Mr. Maclean could be found at Avalon, the Chelsea nightclub that has taken over the converted church formerly home to the infamously decadent Limelight. He is now known as Juan Maclean, the leader of the computer-enhanced project he calls the Juan Maclean....Certainly on Friday night, the gawkers outnumbered the gawked, although there was more than enough human spectacle to fill a photo-blog. You can visit lastnightsparty.com to see pictures of the band and, more important, the crowd...." ['A Club Party Fit for the Photo-Bloggers' @ The NY Times]

Dr. Dog, The National, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played Irving Plaza in NYC on New Years Eve (Dec. 31, 2005). Nick Brassbonanza (who sent me the first picture above) said the National and CYHSY both played great sets (he missed Dr. Dog). CYHSY played from about 11:30 - 1:00 with a balloon and confetti drop at midnight. As you can see from the third pic down, there were some circus performers entertaining the crowd as well.

The last three pictures came from davehsia's Flickr. Even more @ garbnzgh's Flickr.
