Ben Gibbard, Andrew Kenny & Matthew Caws played the Bowery
ANDREW KENNY @ BOWERY BALLROOM | JAN 10, 2006 (cred: mina k)

NYC is like that. On a random Tuesday night, Stephen Malkmus is playing Pavement songs in the basement of Knitting Factory while The Mooney Suzuki happen to be testing out new material at Sin-e, and Ben Gibbard (Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie), Andrew Kenny (American Analog Set) and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) are playing a one-off show at the Bowery Ballroom. For those not familiar with the venues, all three combined hold less than 1000 people.
Reviews of the Gibbard show are up at Stereogum, Central Village, lolz at Zach, and thegoodlife_863's LiveJournal.
More photos by Mina k at her Flickr. Death Cab is playing SNL Saturday.

This was really fun show...not too polished, lots of jokes, great set list. The Neil Diamond cover was really funny. Tim Robbins was in the VIP area with the bass player from Death Cab.

I definitely enjoyed Ben's set and found him to be a pretty engaging presence and performer, although it was clear that he was honest in his admission that he "didn't do this sort of thing often." I ran into comedian Todd Barry in the men's room, I was like "hey, you're that joke funny man from Dr. Katz right?" He not only confirmed but plugged the DVD release date. Impressive.

What's even funnier is the that the bartender in the backroom was David Caruso.
