I don't know how I got scooped by another blog when I actually *work* for Columbia Online (make that worked), but if any of your readers need an online producer/marketing expert with scary good music kung-fu, they can drop me a line. I'm gonna have a lot of free time.

wes claims that it was totally a surpise? wait has sony been doing well? ummmmmmmmm. if by well, you mean conniving and shady. then yes, theyre doin great.
Posted by zach | January 6, 2006 5:05 PM
i didn't claim that, that is just what the firees told me. every knows they are not doing great but those dept's weren't known to be danger of being fired.
Posted by wes | January 6, 2006 5:18 PM
fair enough. i just though it was inevitable for big changes to happen over there. i do not mean to make light of a bad situation. its the coporation i blame. not the music lovers who work there.

Any word on the team of people that authorized the ill fated copy protection software? My guess is that class action lawsuit, didn't help the bottom line there.

well ramie, the people end responsible for bad decisions high up are never really fired haha, or at least not without a big severance. it's always the low and mid level people that do all the actual work that get fired and then the ones left over have to double their work load (ie West Coast creative dept being fired, not the East Coast creative dept has to take over all those projectst)
Posted by wes | January 6, 2006 6:28 PM
sorry, typo (again lol) should have read:
(ie West Coast creative dept being fired, NOW the East Coast creative dept has to take over all those projectst)

I've been in the music biz since the mid 80's...Trust me..the Big Houses have to clean house every 3-4 yrs....So stop your whining...you knew what you were getting into.

always an interesting argument oldschool lemmy.
In the same vein I'd like to say
1. People that move to Washington DC or Baltimore shouldn't complain when they are robbed or murdered, because they knew what the crime rate there was.
2. People that cross the street shouldn't complain when they get hit by a car and end up in a wheel chair, because they knew there was a chance of this happening with so many cars around
3. Soldiers that go to war shouldn't complain when they get shot and killed, because they knew what they were getting into
Thanks for explaining the situation to the laymen with your simplistic non-argument explanation lemmy!

i'm sorry, but you won't get any compassion from me. you would have, had you walked out the door the day you knew about the rootkit. oh, you're not able to continue working for a bunch of crooked evil bastards who are actively harming the public? go cry on somebody else's shoulder. i'm sure there's a tobacco company you can go work for.
Posted by adam | January 7, 2006 9:43 AM
yeah that's realistic adam. i'm sure that you will quit pappageorge/haymes no more than a minute after a lawsuit hits where it turns out a building caved in and killed people.
Posted by wes | January 7, 2006 11:59 AM
all i'm saying is, not everyone is able to quit their job just like that. which is basically why it sucks to get fired in general, and specifically in that manner. college loans, kids, spouses, mortgage, you know the deal
Posted by wes | January 7, 2006 12:15 PM
"One Pop Icon"?who could that be?
it is a shame how this record company ruined Neil Diamond's comeback bid.If another record company released 12 Songs, the album would be platinum by now.But putting a rootkit in it.Not releasing a single.Delaying the album 3 times so it woudnt get a grammy nomination.
Neil Diamond should be ahaid of Sony!

People who get laid off are typically idiots whose role in the business was likely unnecessary to begin with. Smart, capable people are usually retained, whether in their current position or another one within the company. If you people were really that vital to the company's success to begin with, you'd still have a job.

somebody likes to stalk...
you'd better believe i'd quit my job if i was aware of the sort of negligence that would cost people their lives. obviously sony isn't on that level, but i'm still not sympathetic.

fair enough, we can agree to disagree

When SonyBMG bought Columbia House last year they found themselves with 2 companies that do the same thing. This meant that they also 1 too many of everthing and everyBODY....
So as the two companies consolidate many employees find themselves with no reason to exist. Unfortunately for them there are no other music clubs to migrate to
BMG and it's facist puppetmasters back in Germany have themselves a monopoly...a monopoly that will soon be worthless as digital downloads and a new music industry paradigm replace them
fuck BMG

Is the the big shot Steve Lillywhite?
Lemmy's post is cold but I think he's accurate about the companies' house cleaning every 2 - 3 years. This has certainly been my experience and those of friends at labels. This wasn't always the case though. Prior to Sony taking over CBS and even more so Warner during Mo Ostin's reign, people worked for these companies for 10 - 15+ years. This is one on the many awful effects of the majors becoming divisions of debt heavy public corporations. They were seen as high profit cash machines when they were acquired but then they were forced to do business differently when saddled with the pressure of billions of dollars of debt. Here's to hoping they all get spun off into private companies again (or being replaced by the upstarts).

well, i don't think something being somewhat of a trend, a recent one at that, makes it a good thing. Among the people fired were several ones that had 6, 9 or even 15 years of service in with the company. It's particularly bitter for them to see that they are axed when their junior co-workers with fewer years in and therefor a lower salary are kept on. Brain drain.

I've managed to save up roughly $55808 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
