CYHSY & The National @ Irving Plaza (NYE), NYC | pics

Dr. Dog, The National, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played Irving Plaza in NYC on New Years Eve (Dec. 31, 2005). Nick Brassbonanza (who sent me the first picture above) said the National and CYHSY both played great sets (he missed Dr. Dog). CYHSY played from about 11:30 - 1:00 with a balloon and confetti drop at midnight. As you can see from the third pic down, there were some circus performers entertaining the crowd as well.
The last three pictures came from davehsia's Flickr. Even more @ garbnzgh's Flickr.

oh goddamn did I miss a show. I couldnt go because I had no one to go with me, I still have the FOUR tickets to this show. How depressing to see the night I missed!
Does anyone have a setlist of either?

i was looking everywhere for tickets to this show...people were selling them for 100 a ticket on craigslist. I could have used your tickets. Brooklyn Vegan needs to add section to the site where people can trade and sell tickets for face value. What say you BV????

oh man, i bet this show was completely boring

this show was sick. they sounded so good. I haven't seen an indie crowd so into a show since arcade fire.

enough is enough. this band is mediocre seriously. ENOUGH

brooklynvegan needs to change its name.

it was a very fun, great show. the crowd was way into it and there was just a great atmosphere all around.

Best show of 2006... so far.

Actually, the show kinda sucked. The crowd was filled with immature teens, one of whom actually hit band members with a ballon.

what a fucking amazing show. Perfect New Years set. And one of the BEST NYC crowds of the year.
Posted by Anonymous | January 2, 2006 1:50 PM
show was quite amazing indeedy. and it wasn't just one 'immature' teen who hit band members with balloons, we ALL did.

the show was great. great great great, but there really were some immature kids in the frontrow. they were pestering the band for beer, throwing balloons at them, and yes stealing the band's megaphone from the stage. the bouncers had to deal with to keep them away from the men on stilts. and yes they were the spoiled brats who used their holiday money from their parents on $100 ebay tickets (announcing this to all). there were also a couple of whores showing off their new boobs and elbowing everyone in sight.
i love seeing shows in nyc, but there does seem to be more teenyboppers in the city than anywhere else. older brothers and sisters everywhere, please stop telling your fratty kid brothers, and sisters what to listen too. next year, don't buy them that cool new cd, get them gum.
however, the double band arrangement of Satan Said Dance, fixed everything. peace. can't wait to see more from both bands in 2006.

whores showing off their boobs? wow. next you'll tell me there were people tail-gating outside the venue.
Posted by davehsia | January 3, 2006 2:23 AM
there are only more teeny boppers in NYC when you go to a clap your hands say yeah show mr. jan 2nd, at 7:48pm...don't you get it? CYHSY are mainstream and appeal to cheese balls...
you might even be one of them!

only: ah, you just made me remember my high school hatin' days, when the word "sellout" was generously thrown about.
frankly I'd rather a label or band get the money of frivolous teens than a gum company.

Fuck that.

Yes it was unfortunate to see some of those "teens" who paid $100 a ticket leave early to go to Misshapes. Who cares about them though? I had a great time by just tuning them out. It was actually a pleasant surprise to see a New York crowd move their hips and jump to the music rather than just have their arms crossed nodding their head.
By the way I think I saw David Bowie mooning the band and buying the "teens" some beer.

I'm a fan of CYHSY and I think the night was pretty mediocre for a New Years gig. I was hoping they'd put on a good 'show' but ended up getting a pretty good concert. Those circus peeps were pretty slim for the hype around this one....they barely did anything but juggel. I know Kuroda wasn't going come in for the light show, but their songs have the potential for much more energy at their shows.

I thought the energy during the show was pretty solid, especially during "Yellow Country Teeth" ! The crowd was jumping around, screaming the lyrics and having a great time. The energy was not sustained for the whole show and the the crowd did thin out by the end of the night. The highlight for me was when they played a cover of Neil Young's "Helpless". It was a sweet rendition and they sounded great on it.
Plus, The National were unreal! They played a solid opening set and I heard a few people say they should have headlined. It was a smooth set.
All in all, I thought it was a great show. The balloon drop did malfunction at midnight, but it ended up falling (with the help of a man with a cane) and that helped stir the crowd up. CYHSY were very tight and Alec even had a smile on his face a few times, so maybe he was also having a good time. The moment it hit midnight and they went from "auld lang syne" into "yellow country teeth" was one of my favorite concert moments in a long time. Happy New Year!

i was outta town for this show, but having seen CYHSY a few times before, i feel like their live performances never quite live up to expectations, even though i am a big fan of the album. seems like more than a couple people agree. when they were at warsaw last year, the national just blew them out of the water.

i loved the show. anyone have a setlist?

The guy who released the balloons was the man. I thought he was going to crack his head open. I didn't see a cane. i took pics:
