WE ARE SCIENTISTS: PRE-FACIAL HAIR
We are Scientists

"...i have nothing against this band at all, but this is their first album and it's on a major..." [commenter]

Actually they have at least three old albums that are all available for download as MP3s. (via heartonastick)

I haven't seen those album covers for a while now. Takes me back to my college days when W.A.S. played all the cool parties. I'm glad the record is set straight, however Chris said in Rolling Stone: "If there's any justice in the world you'll never hear our early stuff." Oh well, it is interesting to see how their sound has evolved.

I've never been called out on the mat on BV before. Cool.

I was given this album by one of their college friend's two years ago, and I thought, ok band, not for me. Never did the word indie enter my head.

So I wan't counting old releases that only their college friends had. I realize their label must love that they have indie buzz suddenly, but none of their old releases garnered any attention in the indie world.

I stand by my comment. Indie is a sound, and their's aint.

Not saying they're a bad rock band. Just miss the days when an indie record was hauntingly original, avant-garde, and sometimes downright weird. Something that most people would hate, and a few would love like nothing else. A beautiful time when the phrase "They're indie, and they're gonna be huge" just wouldn't have made sense.

Remember seeing them at Brownies in like '02. Last show I saw there before it closed...

Does anyone know if they got their name from the Cap'N'Jazz song, or is that just a coincidence?

Posted by Kevin | January 19, 2006 4:31 PM

yes, im sure they took it from the capn jazz song. where else would it come from?

but, uh, when did this blog turn into a press release festival for major label bands looking to buzz? is that clap your hands' fault?

what happened to bv covering bands that actually need the exposure?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2006 5:13 PM

They took their name from an inside joke, supposedly. Matt over at youaintnopicasso.com has been in love with these kids for awhile...

i agree with...the guy who posted before "Zacharye Bread." come on bv.

Posted by jake | January 19, 2006 6:40 PM

i have never heard this band before but i certianly have no interest in checking them out. bv has burnt me out on this band before i got a chance to hear them. oh well.

i hate a couple things about this band:

1. name.. we are scientists? also, if it isn't the cap'n jazz song, it's just changing the plurality of one of the best gbv songs.

2. boring music. i am tired of boring music.

3. 3 piece band does not equal "can also double as a comedy outfit". the oxes came closest to attaining a bonafide title as musicians / sketch comedy troupe.. but even then, not quite & who cares? three young white dudes in suits and ties.. oh right, you like stella, still.

4. the oxes should put out a new album.

5. knob creek is delicious.

Hey Nick Knuckleduster, The Unicorns were better than the Oxes as far as music & comedy went. WaS aren't even funny. I hate singers who smile all the time.

A friend of mine turned me on to WAS a few years ago. Their old tunes were solid gold power-pop. Selective Memory is one of my favorite songs - it's fantastic.

Now they've gone the route of the Bravery. Blah. I have absolutely no interest. My band played a dive show with them at the Royal Oak in Williamsburg a year or so ago, and all I could think was, "What happened to that great power-pop sound?" Now it's all four-on-the-floor rhythms and indistinct melodies.

But what do I know? Now they are signed, making money, and "huge in the UK." My band is still playing powerpop, and the only thing that's huge is our studio bills. OUCH.

wow... thanks for sharing. who knew they were a Weezer rip-off band before becoming a Hot Hot Heat clone?? Mighty original.

I guess the backlash was going to come. As for whether or not they deserve a space at bv - of course they do. I read bv to talk about what is going on in music - i didn't know that had to be limited to a certain kind of sound.

As for power pop - that sound is limiting (just listen to the Click Five). I'm not going to despise a band for wanting to evolve.

As for Hot Hot Heat - their last record wasn't so great, so I'm glad someone else is doing it.

Christian, as I recall, you were quite jealous of ANOTHER local band that got big:

Be happy for them. :)

Hot Hot Heat's last record wasn't very good, so I'm glad someone else is picking up where "Breakdown" left off.

Hate is the fipside of love. I'm sure WAS are happy that someone is taking the time to love/hate them. BTW, I heard for the first time @ their show last week and they seemed pretty awesome to me.

Posted by Steve | January 20, 2006 3:31 PM

Yeah, so their show last night was cut short when the speaker I was standing right in front of caught on fire mid-song, dumping thick black smoke into the room. Crazy shit. Band eventually stopped playing and threw some beer/water on it to put it out and then started playing again. A few seconds later, they stopped again because they were told the room had to be cleared. about a half hour later, the room evenually was cleared and we left. Not sure if they ever started playing again. First time I've been at a show where the band sets a speaker on fire. Don't see that every day.

Chris said in Rolling Stone: "If there's any justice in the world you'll never hear our early stuff."

Couldn't be more wrong. We are Scientists, had two or three previous albums from their old days as a college band and THEY ARE AWESOME. They've got spirit, spunk, all that shit. I'm not against mainstream bands, and I don't mind that the new stuff is poppy. But it's just void. They are creative, they should let it go. "Your body is my body". Who the fuck writes that. Give more Spotomatic Freeze.

They sound a lot like Weezer. Not that its a bad thing. I saw these guys way back.. I think it was 2001. Put on a good show they did!
