Independent Award Shows: Totally Pointless?
"...The list of ten final nominees has most of the names we've been unable to escape lately (Sufjan, Arcade Fire, etc.), and the only remotely surprising nominee is the Kings of Leon, which isn't exactly a good thing. But now we know the nominees, anyway, and that answers one burning question. Now for a few more: Does indie-rock really need to pat itself on the back like that? And who really gives a fuck?..." Yeah, alternative awards kind of label the alternative market as just that, a market. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it smacks of mainstream suits who A) don't know independent music B) Wouldn't know it if it crawled up their ass a hibernated through the cold New York Winter (although it's mild right now). Let's keep the award shows for the music genres that need award shows... namely pop, some hip-hop and crap R&B.

id love a source awards-style fight with all of these tepid indie rock bands.

My biggest problem with these awards is that they don't shed any light on new or heretofore unheralded indie artists. Sure, The Arcade Fire and Sufjan et al are independent in the literal sense of the word, but it seems pointless to champion bands under the "indie" banner who are mere steps away from the mainstream border. How about we bestow some medals on bands who aren't Pitchfork darlings, eh?
Also, I agree with the poster who said they are sick of Sufjan... do we really need to give an award to some folk douche with too many instruments on stage? No.

Well said, Brandt.
Speaking of awards though, I must give props to Diesel-U Music for recognizing W.A.S. and Out Hud. Of course, this was back in June, when W.A.S. was still playing the Tank.

They don't shed any light to you, Brendt. But all the teaming masses out there wandering through their middle-American Best Buy blockstores might just be more willing to pick up and try out a CD that says "Blah Blah Award Winner" on it.
Awards are nothing more than advertising. They are otherwise useless, and mostly harmless. But I'm not really going to stand in the way of new audiences discovering music that way.

wow. Sucks to be the people who don't get Sufjan Stevens. You're missing out. I pity you.

Actually, I pity you for being some tosser who likes dweeby folk music for sensitive twentysomethings. Really, Sufjan is a twit. You know what? I'm from Illinois, and as a conossieur on my own state I can say the album's crap. I spent many, many years in Chicago, and I don't need some spotty singer like Sufjan to romanticize it song for me.

"the only remotely surprising nominee is the Kings of Leon, which isn't exactly a good thing"
what i want to know is why exactly it is not exactly a good thing that the kings of leon was nominated. I personally think that if any of the nominees deserve to win it the kings would be it

Hey BV,
First-I'm a huge fan of your site. You have turned me on to some amazing bands and have been the reason I've got tickets to shows before they sold out, so thank you.
I had great seats for the Sufjan show last night at Jazz and Lincoln Center and got a few good pics (including one of the setlist) and wrote up a review. Please feel free to use them on your site-I would really love and appreciate a link to my site if you do.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers
