Jens Lekman | Oh You're So Silent
I swear one of these days I'm going to write a 2005 recap/best-of post. In the meantime, I'm playing catch-up. In the process I've found another album I really love. Oh You're So Silent (a collection of music that came out on EPs) is my first introduction to Jens Lekman. I know that means I'm way late to the party. All Music says, "If you haven't heard Jens Lekman yet, you're missing out on one of the true pop geniuses of the early 2000s." That seems right. Sixeyes says, "Lekman would have made a great Tin Pan Alley tunesmith, or may one day make a great composer of Broadway show-stoppers." Now that I'm here, it's just unfortunate that I may not have the opportunity to see Jens play live for a long long time.
One last note: my love for this album is not unique at all.

My experience with this album is very similar to yours, BV. I'm way late to the parade as well, but in the last month or so I've fallen in love with this compilation as well. In fact, it made my Top 10 list for the year despite the fact tha almost all of it was previously released (this was my 1st exposure to Jens, however). Anyway, here's my list (including Jens):

Just one thing, though. It's full title is Oh You're So Silent Jens.

never heard of him either, but i like it! Thanks for introducing me to this music BV; sounds a LOT like Stephin Merritt / Magnetic Fields to me...

I've been told that it's "the dark season" in Sweden right now, and that people always feel waaaay down/waaaay depressed when this happens. And I heard that Jens was just in this sort of funk, and that maybe it'll just pass when the season changes(?)

Jens is GREAT! I was lucky enough to see him at Mercury Lounge last year.

That Mercury Lounge show was great. I reviewed it at my site...

I saw him a couple weeks in San Francisco and he was even better. I wouldn'tput too much stock in his supposed retirement, despite what he writes on his website. At the SF show he said he was moving there. We'll see.

I was at the mercury show. The ending was amazing, when he went to the side w/o mic nor amp nor lights, and played "Julie."
I just wish he played longer. It seemed rather short. Maybe because he was just burnt out.

This quote is from his December 31, 2005 blog entry on his site...

"My vacation payed off well, I had my heart a little messed up again but nothing can bring me down right now. NOTHING. I am writing , recording and planning stuff 16 hours a day. I don't know what is gonna come out of it but I can tell you one thing: 2006 is gonna be the best year ever."
The California sun has obviously had a good effect.

Glad to see somebody else referencing the excellent False 45th blog from Vermont. Great stuff from up North.

okay, that jens concert at mercury was one of my absolute faves of 2005. jerry, when he walked into the dark corner with just his uke and everyone was DEAD SILENT was easily the coolest thing i've ever witnessed at mercury. sorry but i first saw this guy when my favorite hosted 'new york noise', played a video of his and then i was obsessed. he is like the art brut of morrissey-type crooners.
