Mi and L'au @ The Knitting Factory, NYC | pics

"Mi and L'au @ Knitting Factory" or "This is why I missed Bruce"

Mi and L'au make really beautiful music, but it's sloooooooow and quiet music. They shouldn't play big (relatively speaking) venues like Knitting Factory on a Saturday night at 10:30 PM to a crowd of people primarily there to witness the extremely lively Akron/Family. (January 14, 2006)

You should be sitting when you watch Mi and L'au. Those who got to the club first did sit. By the time I got in from the blistering cold, the place was packed with people sitting from the stage to the back wall. That left everyone else jammed into the perimeter and bar area. People kept filing in. The sitters made up like 25% of the people, but were taking up like 75% of the space. People near the bar were talking (Mi and L'au were whispering). It seemed hopeless, so I walked out during their first song to check my coat and use the bathroom.

Someone must of yelled "shut the @#$@#$ up!" while I was gone because I returned to find an extremely quiet (but still very crowded) room. Eventually I found a spot and the music started to become like the album (really beautiful, slow and quiet).

danfun has a review and pics too.

Am I the only one who sees no point to seeing bands like this play live? People will use words like "intimate" and "hushed" and "beautiful" in their reviews of really slow, quiet bands, but seem to rarely admit how utterly boring it gets after three songs of being respectfully silent during a rock concert, as if you are at church or a library. Straining to be completely bored at a bar takes a level of patience I just don't have.

paul - for a band like Kings of Convenience, who I really really like, I can't understand your perspective.

Mi and L'au really didn't do it for me on sat. I can understand your view re: them.

Totally worthless band...they sucked the passion for music right out of my heart...I wanted to rush the stage and impale myself just to get some action up there. Makes me wonder if having a model hot french dude and a willow thin lady in your band is all it takes to get your "folk" album released these days. I smell bullshit

All I was looking to get out of their performance was a nice relaxing 40 minutes before the awesomeness that is AK began. And that is what I got.

Mi and L'au were absolutely beautiful headlining friday night's show at the Cakeshop. They are incredibly sweet and talented and booo on all that say otherwise.
