Pitchfork Destroys Morningwood who bikes with NY Times
"Haters seeking a new target for bilious, fire-bellied screeds are going to love Morningwood: They're yet another NYC retro-rock retread, their bassist used to drum for the Wallflowers, and, yes, of all the possible bandnames in the whole entire world, they chose 'Morningwood.' If taking swings at them seems easy, it ought to. In the aftermath of late-70s garage-rock hangovers, they sound exactly as you'd expect-- hints of new wave crossing paths with uninspired power-pop and jackleg dance-rock. And yet, despite their readymade niche, their hype's been tepid in a post-holiday indie rock market blue-balled by a disappointing Strokes album...." [The rest of the review @ Pitchfork]
'This is awesome!' Ms. Claret yelled as she circled past Mr. Yanowitz. [NY Times]

im surprised pitchfork gave it as high a score as they did. everything about this band is utter shite.

i saw them open for fischerspooner a while ago...im not one to actively hate, but they really seem as big label cooked-up as the backstreet boys.

I am the only living morning wood fan. why is that? what is so terrible about them? out here in the sticks...can you imagine what is on the radio? or what the local bands are like? morning wood is like...freaking ambrosia. I like them. I will proudly be their only fan. peace.

well obviously Pitchfork can never like a band like this whether they are good or not

"Whether they are good or not." So Pitchfork should like a band even if they are not good? I'm not even sure what you mean by "a band like this."

"Pitchfork can never like a band like this whether they are good or not?"
Are you kidding? Seems to be they were pretty generous to Morningwood. That 3.9 score they gave the album was about 3.9 points too high.

they are fucking awful

They enjoy bicycling in the city. Extra points in my book.

the depth of this band is gigantically shallow...but I've heard worse.

hahaha, here we go again. this band is great. haters hate them because they are pop, and becuase the band probably hates the indie cred scene here in nyc. who could blame them. you all are fucking stuck up bitter struggling dudes who forgot how to enjoy yourselves.
I am proud to be a fan too, and always will be.
and of course pitchfork hates them, but you wanna know something funny, all the NY writers from pitchfork will be there tonight, garunteed. they will write about how they hated it becuase they have to to appeal to pitchforks readership, but they will enjoy themselves like they have every time they have seen the band. at least that is what they tell me. don't ask me how i know, i just know

but matt... really. how do you know?

haha, c'mon you're not stupid (I'm sure!!) whether good or not equals that quality is irrelevant if a band doesnt fit into a certain pitchfork approved bandwidth of genres and/or aethetics. like every normal person the Pitchfork entity only likes certains types of music and/or artists

It's irrelevant if their album sucks or not. I am not even a fan in the least (though I think that one video I saw for nthblabla was fun). see above

as a writer here in nyc (not a music writer), we all kinda know eachother.
Posted by matt | January 11, 2006 6:01 PM
Anyone who was expecting this album to be better than staggeringly mediocre was kidding themselves.
That said, I love "Nth Degree" with all my heart, and I thoroughly enjoy watching all the hipsters squirm. Their live show is the most appallingly beautiful train wreck I've ever seen, and Chantal really is mesmerizing in her own way.

fuck this band, fuck it hard, to hell and back; this is a music so noxious it stinks in the ear

ahahha Matt you're such a fucking pompous asshole writer. Morningwood isn't even very interesting pop music. But yeah, I guess you're one of those people that loves the shitty kind of pop music. Kudos! You're above the fray!

I kinda wish they would have said this stuff about the Rapture like three years ago, and spared us all of this crap to begin with!!

so much tension on this lil' comment board, and over what some morningwood? (poor lil' ashley parker angel will suffer from some on the new mtv show - why do i even bother turning to that channel anymore) anyway, mtv's horrible programming is not the topic here, nor should it ever be. but morningwood...yes it's been done before, but sometimes you need some predictable/familiar/cheerleading cheesy pop. it's the perfect music to put a side ponytail into your hair and dance around your room. i just realized most of the postings were by guys, so i guess i'll stand alone on this thought. just don't eat me alive for liking them, have mercy.

it's not just pitchfork that doesn't like this album. metacritic score for is probably going to be pretty low.

"haters hate them because they are pop, and becuase the band probably hates the indie cred scene here in nyc. who could blame them."
The best bands in this city, and there are so few of them, exist completely outside the "indie cred" scene. They don't hate it because they don't acknowledge it. These bands can make incredible music and be basically ignored as punishment for not playing the game (pro or con). If you play the game in either direction you get booked into bigger shows.
Oh, and knowing Pitchfork they'll change their mind in a couple of months and suddenly praise Morningwood to the heavens.

If you don't like your favorite band getting mocked, stop listening to bad music.
