Serena Maneesh @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics
Serena Maneesh played a short, but intense, set at Mercury Lounge Saturday night (Jan 21, 2006).
Stream a song at Honeymilk Records.

"Serena Maneesh has been compared to wall-of-noise bands like Sonic Youth and The Jesus and Mary Chain, mixed with the grand orchestration of Sigur Ros and M83. They even had their friend Sufjan Stevens play the flute and marimba on their latest self-titled album. Not too many bands can kill you with feedback AND flutes. If that's not musically manic-depressive, I don't know what is." [Oh My Rockness]
note: Sufjan was spotted at their Northsix and Mercury Lounge shows (two nights in a row). No flute though.

They were scheduled to go on at midnight, but didn't start until 12:45. Around 1:30 they were finished. No encore. They're a spectacle to watch, and to listen to. Danfun has more pics and a review.
Tickets for some of their shows in March are already on sale.

Great pics of a great show, but is the site you link to really your idea of a review?

SM is a great band, but they just really weren't on it for this show. i left disappointed.

I disagree -- the show ROCKED. I've never seen anything like this band, and can't wait to see them again at Bowery in March. I'm still in shock.

I agree completely with Spinach. What a storming set! I don't fault them one bit for not playing an encore; if anything, it added to unnerving intensity of the show. I will say that they are taking the My Bloody Valentine gimmick seriously — particularly the overwhelming volume level — but that's a compliment. Did anybody see the Northsix gig?

How was Asobi Seksu?

i was blown away at northsix. did not expect them to be that intense. i agree that the short set worked. i loved the way they just ripped through a few songs then walked off. very cool.

I saw the Northsix gig. Psychic Ills were fantastic but S-M disappointed; they seemed sloppy and sort of boring; the guitarist was high as hell and was quite messy. And he got his guitar tangled in that stupid fishnet and knocked the mic stand over (and he knocked the cable outta his guitar), which was somewhat laughable. But it was worth the $10 alone just to see the bassist rock out.

snoresville...hype machine strikes again

the singer's pirates of the caribbean aesthetic was pretty funny though.

i thought the show was a snooze too, and i was a pre-show booster. also... not loud enough.

was really psyched for the northsix show, but i walked away utterly unimpressed and disappointed. all look and no chops. pretty, hip people do not necessarily make powerful, interesting music. the drummer was solid and the backup singer had a good thing going on in the corner, but i couldn't even look at his johnny deppness and the sad, sad bassist for more than ten seconds without being swept by nausea. but if people say it was an off show, i'll give them another chance.

I was really disappointed by this show. First of all, going on that late was really weak. And just look at this band...it's like they're trying to cover every indie band stereotype. The nico girl, the clean cut drummer in blacks and greys with eye shadow on, the dude in a thrift store suit that looks like beck, and then of course the captain jack sparrow/steven tyler lead singer with the worst moustache I've ever seen. All they need is a guy with a huge beard and they'll have all their bases covered. And then after making us wait for over an hour they play a 45 minute set? It was boring and the singer was so coked up he couldn't even sing properly. Give me a break, go back to Scandanavia.

I tried to see them at the instore appearance at Soundfix on Saturday afternoon. The gig was cancelled because their instruments were being held hostage at Northsix. Weak!
I did see them posing for photos in the lounge between the store and the bar. Woooooo...

i'm pretty sure you pushed me aside at one point so you could take pictures. not cool at all.

I was amazed at their performance at North Six, i was also awe-struck by the bass player.

I went to Sound Fix the next day for the instore. As I sat waiting at the bar wait for my tea, the bass player comes and sits on the bar stool right next to me; a good chance for me to start up a conversation. So I asked her about them setting up to play in the store, but i was disappointed to hear about their instruments being locked up at north six. I had my doubts about them all fitting inside the fix anyway. Plus the sound would have been terrrible with all the instruments and lack of mics/PA etc. However, she felt really bad that i came to see them again and they were not playing. She introduced me to the singer who gave me a thumbs up for sporting a Spiritualized t-shirt.
They were very apollogetic and gave me the last of 200 misprinted copies of their latest album on double vinly, which they were selling the night before for $20 for free. Very nice people indeed! Great performers too! I {heart} norwegians.

Has anyone seen a picture of Brooklyn Vegan? Just wondering: I think I finally figured out who he is!

Anyone else see Avey Tare and Panda Bear of Animal Collective at the Northsix show? they were standing right next to the bleachers. I held back from kissing their toes.
Posted by nate | January 23, 2006 3:49 PM
I actually sucked on Animal Collective's toes and thanked them for giving my life meaning. They seemed to really appreciate that. On another note, I've coined a label for Serena Maneesh's music: "shoegazer." It's seriously unlike anything I've ever heard.
