Strokes Earn First UK No. 1 Album, cover of NY Mag
"New York rockers the Strokes earned their first No. 1 U.K. album yesterday (Jan. 9) with their third Rough Trade set, 'First Impressions of Earth.' The group reached No. 2 with their two previous studio sets: 2001's 'Is This It?' and 2003's 'Room on Fire.'" [@ Billboard]

this new strokes album is atrocious. i'm dumbfounded that NY magazine would dub this waste as their best album yet.

this band created modern indie rock as we know it

Over at the 'Stamps, we just discussed earlier today how odd it is that so many blogs feel compelled to gang up on The Strokes for a variety of very lame reaons.

The Strokes new album is truly awful and how they made the cover of New York is baffling. I totally discount these stories about the band's "sobriety". Do you really think these guys don't drink, do drugs and chase women??????
And Jay McInerney doesn't tell you that Julian Casablancas kept him waiting five hours for the interview to start...

heather- i dont think any of them chase women anymore, theyre all married/engaged so yeah w/ that the whole settling down idea makes sense. dont be so quick to judge just because theyre rockstars.

Matt,
I couldn't care less if they are celibate. I happen to know people who know the band..and I don't like hypocrites.
And the new album still sucks...big-time...

The band was going to play 3 shows in one night, one in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn and one in New Jersey. Those plans fell through. NYC show soon, still in the works.

so what if they're on the cover of New York? that magazine is nonsense, like the NY version of Star.

their new album sux. it was a good ride while it lasted.

The album may be a bit bloated (10 or 11 songs would do just fine) but definitely does not "suck." I respect them for taking chances, they sound tight and stylish as ever. I didn't expect to like it and didn't expect to really want to go see them again. But I really do!

that new york article was pretty awful. bad writing, trite storytelling, and it had no flow.

the new york article on jt leroy, however, was phenomenal.
haven't heard the album but even if it is bad i don't see how it requires such grandiose assertions like "it was a good ride while it lasted." maybe it is just a misstep.

I think the new album is pretty strong, and like Amrit above, it has surprisingly rekindled my interest in the band. The New York article was a disappointment. McInerney wants to make sure you know he once interviewed Mick Jagger! And when he finally gets around to what seems to be a meaningful discussion with Julian, it's "off the record". What a waste of space.

The Strokes offer a newer, fresher sound with First Impressions Of Earth compared to Room On Fire which sounded too much like their debut album. There is a certain rawness in Casablancas's voice that is quite evident. I think it's a pretty sweet album.
