'The Bank' reopening as Element
"The Bank, New York City's premiere, and most well known gothic nightclub, closed its doors on September 4th, 1999, after having been in business for over ten years. It had maintained itself as a fixture on the Lower East Side, the pale limestone façade looming on the corner of Houston and Essex, as a beacon to alternative nightlife." [the whole history @ Read Magazine]

Curbed reports that the building right next door to Mercury Lounge is reopening as Element.

Terrible idea; even worse than Avalon deciding to have shows. Too many clubs in this city already.

In the line-up outside the club on Saturday night there was a disco-dude in a leisure suit and a chick that looked like a short-short wearing Rainbow Brite on roller-skates. Cooooool place.

Terrible idea/too many clubs? The bank's been a club since the mid '80s, gay for a few years, and following that closing, goth held the greatest longevity. Let's hope it's goth again.

As a former patron of The Bank under its 90s incarnation, I wouldn't have minded it either. I enjoyed Larry Tee's reinvigoration of danceable new wave, elektro and rock which he called "electroclash." I've grown to really despise goth clubs with their unhip, all-too-serious, third rate goth-geek "element" (pardon the pun) and the de-evolution of the music from hip 80s and early 90s alternative to bad techno posing as "industrial" and 3rd rate Eldritch aping "goth" bands. I have no love for "goth" clubs as far as what that means now.
That said, I always wished The Bank would reopen as a proper Dave Kendall era 120 Minutes alternative dance club again, assimilating some newer stuff like Peaches, The Faint, BRMC, Interpol or Ladytron. There is apparently a Wednesday new wave night in The Vault, and I suppose I'll have to check that out one day.

I would love it if it reopend as a "goth" night. I really do miss that place. Though things aren't what they use to be and even if Albion or some other goth night did go back there it really wouldn't be quite the same. :(
