V2's The Mooney Suzuki | Secret Shows @ Sin-e
It was widely reported in September that The Mooney Suzuki signed to V2. Little Steven likes them. They played his party at the Hard Rock Cafe on New Years Eve. On January 10 & 17 (2006), they're playing "secret" shows at Sin-e in NYC as "The Patchwork Family". They want to try out some new material. Sin-e is a very small club. Tickets for the January 10th one are not-so-secretly on sale.

why do these shows have to be "secret" are they that big that these are extra special preformances?

Spoken like someone who has never seen the Mooney Suzuki live...
For them to play such a small room is awesome. I fully expect to watch the roof blow off.

how strict is Sin-e with their age restriction? Is it like some places in New York where you get in as long as you show an ID with your (real or fake) age on it even if you are not 21?

That's gonna be a great show. If there's anything left of the club after the Mooney Suzuki are done, I encourage people to stick around for Bona Roba.

Was it just me or did Mooney Suzuki suck last night? I almost fell asleep standing up.
For those who stuck around Bona Roba sounded awesome. great sound, total rnr.
Jonny Lives was nice, a refreshing change of pace. sort of 1920s type music.
ironic, but the band i went to see was the worst of the bunch.

They sucked HUGELY. All new songs, no bass player, TERRIBLE background vocals.
That last song listing all the drugs Sammy has used was EXCRUCIATING. It sounded like a bad John Valby song made worse by the addition of those guys from the band that played before them. There's nothing lamer than a guy getting older and bragging about all the drugs he used to do. And that woman who "clucked" instead of singing? What was that?
I was really, really, disappointed.

Sucked seems to be the word of the hour for mooney/patchwork. couldn't agree more - i like an occasional comment in between songs but did sammy have to talk for 15 minutes in between each one? he sounded like an old washed up lounge act working on his comedy routine.

At least Sammy's talking kept us from hearing another half-baked song too quickly.
I forgot to mention that half the crowd was gone by the time the set was finished. That was a sad sight.

I didn't know what to expect last night, I was hoping that it would rock and as we all know it didn't! I know that they can rock - but I'm happy that they are making a new record, new mooney record is somthing I've been waiting for and I'm pretty thrilled that they trusted us to listen to the new stuff in it's rawest form - I think that is cool, if we call ourselves fans - then I think that is cool. After I think about it for a bit, what band has let us into their lives this early in the game? I know it will rock soon - I'm happy that I was there to hear some new tracks. I feel like they are going back to the way it was - Will is back as the drummer - and they are looking for someone to play bass. Yeah - I want my $10 bucks back because I'm poor - but I feel lucky to have heard some of this stuff, I feel that we are lucky that Sam and Tyler thought we were important enough to listen to their new material....hell, they have been supposedly playing that new stuff for 1 week - I can see that stuff rocking, they are smart guys, they through us for a loop and it worked - but let's put it this way - it's more than a lot of other bands...I think it was ballsy, they let us in early - that is rare - - - I'm not willing to give up on them. OK....

But do you think all that material was just a week old? I think Sam was joking when he said that.
Posted by Joe | January 11, 2006 3:31 PM
I was pretty fired up after the show and was like - what happened to The Mooney's?...and so I went up to Sammy after the show and I asked him what the deal was....he said, that the tunes were only a week old to Tyler and Will - and that he'd been writing over the past few months like a madman - I guess they have a studio space, but Sam writes and then he lets the stuff come alive through the band, Sam is a great writer - and I feel that these songs will grow HUGE over the next bunch of months - we all know that the MOONEY's ROCK....so the fact that this stuff must be 100% new... I think they left their big record company - SONY and are with V2 who has the White Stripes... So I assume that they are doing a new record for V2...I can only take their word that this stuff is new and if I put all the facts together - - - I'm saying,....signed major label deal few years back, figured out that Sony sucks - or sony said they suck, left Sony, kicked around for a bit, signed with indy label V2 and now doing the early steps to making a record??? I don't know - but these guys are sick - and I'm hoping they play again so I can see the progress of another week of rehersals have gone.... I don't know what it takes to make a record, but I can assume that it isn't an overnight thing - right? I'm sure some of our favorite songs of our fav bands sounded like crap before it got life injected into them - and that has to take time - - - I honestly think its admirable of them to let us in this early - - - - if that is actually the case?

Posted today on www.TheMooneySuzuki.com:
"For the record, The Patchwork Family is NOT The Mooney Suzuki doing a "secret" show. The Patchwork Family is a stripped-down, experimental, different experience entirely.
The Mooney Suzuki WILL be playing an additional NYC date in their full-on, sweat-drenched, amp-shattering glory at the Jan 25th Shindig! party."
hmm...

you're about a week behind

It was not the MooSu show I was hoping for... but the songs were fucking great. What do you mean half the crowd was gone by the time they finished? I could barely get outside to smoke a cig after the set! I'm shocked to hear people say that Bona Robo was good because I swear I was the only person watching them! It was me and the guy sweeping up! And I only stayed cause a friend was tending bar! Bona Robo was bullcrap! They fuckin sound like the Georgia Satellites tryin to appeal to the Killers audience... except not a single hook in their set. I think I'll skip Patchwork this week. But fuck am I psyched for The Mooney Suzuki at Shindig!
