Your Favorite Musical Moments from 2005
For a recent contest, I asked you to tell me some of your favorite musical moments from 2005. Here are some of the answers I received. I'll be collecting/posting more over the next few days...
ARCTIC MONKEYS @ BOWERY BALLROOM

hands down my musical moment of the year was being directly in front of the stage for the arctic monkeys bowery show, sweating out my feelings, screaming every lyric, dancing/fighting with all the riotously fantastic drunk brits in front for an hour and then walking up bowery in just a t-shirt and memories in the rain to cool down.

JOSE GONZALEZ @ THE LIVNG ROOM

Seeing the first US Jose Gonzalez show at the Living Room in NYC

THE DECEMBERISTS @ INTONATION (via Pitchfork)

for the favorite musical moment/concert/anything category, I'd have to go back to this past summer's Intonation Festival in the great city of Chicago. The Decemberists were closing out their amazing set (which was much more lively than I had ever imagined them being), and I was right at the front in the press pit, thanks to some photo passes. My friend nudged me and said I should take one of the tambourines. So as they're closing out with the song about the whale, I reached up and plucked it, stuck it in my backpack, and called it a night. As we drove back from Chicago, every time we would hit a speed bump or take a sharp turn, the faint jingle of my theft was heard. It was pretty funny.

SUFJAN STEVENS @ BOWERY KATRINA BENEFIT

My favorite concert moment of the year was at the katrina benefit with sufjan stevens and adam green - when sufjan started with REM's the one i love. When he started singing "this one goes out to the one I love" - the combination of the nature of the event and the song and his voice was simply moving. It was such a change from his previous shows at the bowery ballroom, and so appropriate at the same time.

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT @ HARD ROCK CAFE (via Heartonastick)

Half sad/Half amazing...the final Hot Snakes show at Bowery Ballroom and the final RFTC show at Hard Rock in Times Square...total underreported...totally the end of an era...totally blistering real rock and roll.

you can't steal a band's musical instrument at a show just to get a 'nice moment' out of it haha. not cool "d"!
for me: being right up front center for Arcade Fire @ Summer Stage and feeling the rush through the crowd (and the push) when David Bowie storms on stage as a surprise

Amen to RFTC and Hot Snakes. It is truly sad to see them go. Oh, and Q and not U as well. Three bands that deserved more attention than they got.

akron/family covering neil young's "for the turnstiles," shirtless, in the middle of the crowd at tonic. that whole show was a series of great musical moments.
oh, also that dec. 28th yo la tengo show at maxwells. special guest: david johansen. wow.
uhm, yeah i can't remember too much before december. hah.

Tambourine theft = weak!

for me, I'd say seeing:
1) Gorilla Biscuits packing CBGBs roaring through just about every song they ever wrote and the entire crowd going berzerk and singing along to each one.
2) Arcade Fire in Toronto.
3) The National at the Warsaw and their free record release party (hmm, was that 04?)
3) Architecture in Helsinki at the Warsaw.
I wish I went to the RFTC and Hot Snakes shows. ugh

As if the Decemberists aren't used to equipment theft. Capitol will buy them a whole vanful of tambourines.
Now, stealing Peelander-Z's pots and pans -- that would be a crime. Because I get the feeling they actually use those to cook.

The first Jose Gonzalez show was in Brooklyn the day before. Hell, close enough. Both were great.

Wow, a Peelander-Z reference. That just made my day. And I'm pretty sure they do use those to cook. I hear they get pretty hungry after playing human bowling ball.

I think the Wrens and Les Savy Fav each blew away the Decemberists. Not that they were bad. Watching the Wrens play an encore in the middle of the evening to 15,000 people was in my head and heart the best musical moment of 2005.

i just have to point out that it's awesome that Sufjan is wearing an Americans UK shirt in that photo. they're awesome. see them February 23rd @ Southpaw with Man in Gray and Unsacred Hearts. (sorry, couldn't help it!)
i think i still haven't even processed everything from 2005 enough to figure out what any of the bests were. there was a lot of music happening. however seeing The Most Serene Republic @ Hiro during CMJ was definitely up there. As was Sonic Youth @ Maxwell's. pretty unbelievable, really.

Listen, guys - who the fuck cares about a stolen tambourine?
I'll tell you who: Junior Senior.
When they were at the Mercury Lounge, the show stopped for a couple of seconds while Senior tried to locate the missing item. "We should really get more than one," he noted.
The Decemberists probably had a small army of them, at least more than one.
It was funny, it was a memory, and it made this list. So, you know...
By the way, I'm in the picture, towards the left, in the hat.

regardless of whether the decemberists can afford eight billion tambourines or only one, stealing is not cool. its really kind of a downer to hear something like this, because intonation was amazing. i was probably standing right next to you in the press pit.

IT'S A FUCKING TAMBOURINE! Get over it you hipster bitches.
Listen, I was that friend that urged him to take it. It was sitting at the edge of the stage, without a friend in the world, calling for someone to take it.
They have plenty of them, it really wasn't like some kind of heist or immoral act.
I don't usually condone stealing, especially equitment from bands I like, but the oppertunity presented itself and we seized the fuckin day. You're all just jealous that we (him) made the BV list and that he has a tambourine from The Decemberists.
Stop playa hatin', foos.

so you stole their tambourine. great job. that was perhaps something you should have kept to yourself...maybe next time don't brag about on your site. and i'm sure there'll soon be a thread about this on the d's message board. those guys will want blood. consider yourself now a marked man.

I've been jealous all weekend about you making BV's list. Loser.

I once stole a tambourine from a cover band at the whitehat hangout Cadillac Bar in Hoboken. In that case, however, it may have been intended for theft as it was extremely flimsy and had sticker of the band with the words "Booking info..."
Kudos on the tamb. Play it loud. Play it at their next show. Hurl it at the stage. Aim for other pieces of equipment.
