Grammys vs. Pazz & Jop vs. Heart on a Stick

"...Yet out of this morass of often contradictory special interests a consensus of sorts has formed around one album: Kanye West's 'Late Registration.'

Already, the critics have spoken: For the second year in a row, according to the nationwide Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, West has made the year's best album.

What's more, a poll of Internet blogs and other Internet sources that cover music compiled on the Heart on a Stick Web site has made 'Late Registration' one of the only major-label releases to warrant mention inside its top 20, which is dominated by indie-rock artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Wolf Parade.

All of which means next to nothing when the music industry weighs in at the Grammys, to be broadcast nationally at 7 p.m. Wednesday on CBS-Ch. 2...." [Chicago Tribune]

one of the main reason for being so universally agreed upon at award shows and among mainstream music critics is not that is was a very decent album, but also that it's very safe to like it. you dont see the far superior The Game album in any of these lists because of it's offensive nature

True, but West himself is quite the controvertial figure. Of course, that makes him all the more alluring for a lot of people.

Kanye West allows uninformed, predominantly white critics to feel like they're "in touch" with hip-hop culture. That album is spottier than an 80-year-old's dick, and just not that interesting.
