Stay Gold Gallery is very pleased to present Wave of Mutilation featuring the work of Tara Lisa Foley, Kyle Ranson, Brion Nuda Rosch, Oliver Halsman Rosenberg, Sarah Smith, Randy Lee Sutherland, and Sara Thustra.
This exhibition was inspired by the eponymous Pixies song released in 1986 on their celebrated album Doolittle. The artists involved used the show's title as a jumping off point from which to explore their wildly divergent impulses and styles.
For many of the artists, Wave of Mutilation sparked apocalyptic visions. Their work was based on the cataclysmic events that many believe will immediately precede the end of the world. Other artists in the show, however, saw this devastation in context of the natural cycle of life. They concentrated on the idea that regeneration can only come from destruction: one cannot exist without the other. Still others took the show's title as an instruction - rather than depicting a scene of mutilation, they literally destroyed their own work and used the materials in the formulation of new pieces.
This exhibition will include drawing, painting, installation and some collaborative pieces.
The opening reception will feature a live performance by Bunnybrains.
