Serge Gainsbourg - Various Artist - Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited, 2006

Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited comes out on February 27, 2006.

"Franz Ferdinand, Jane Birkin, Marianne Faithfull, Placebo, Carla Bruni, Portishead, Jarvis Cocker, Kid Loco, Françoise Hardy, Keith Flint, Cat Power, Michaël Stipe, Tricky, The Kills, Gonzales, Feist, Dani, The Rakes….All take part in the singular album of which it is a question here.

The bet was serious: to bring together artists resulting from the international scene to interpret English adaptations of the songs of Serge Gainsbourg. The casting and the various finally joined together versions exceed the hopes..." [joelearou]

is it just me or are tribute albums becoming so frequent that they are becoming less and less of a tribute to the artist? why not just call it a covers album...

There's a wonderful Gainsbourg tribute on Tzadik that was released in '97 in the Great Jewish Music series. Features artists like Marc Ribot, Cibo Matto, Blonde Redhead, Wayne Horvitz & Robin Holcolmb and other dowtowny musicians.

Heaven is smoke-free, Serge.

Hasn't Jarvis Cocker's career been just one big Gainsbourg tribute?

I'll take the cover albums over the remix albums anyday. The Cat Power/Karen Elson duet is pretty damn sexy.
