Arctic Monkeys not as hot in USA, not as hot as kids music

High School Musical

THE BILLBOARD 200 (March 11, 2006)
#1 Disney Soundtrack to High School Musical (7 weeks on chart)
#2 Kidz Bop #9 (debut)
...
#5 James Blunt (21 weeks on)
...
#24 Arctic Monkeys (debut)

"See, if the Arctic Monkeys had only called themselves something more appealing to children like the Chocolate Monkeys, the Feel-Good Summer Blockbuster Monkeys or the Curious Little Monkeys, there would have been a veritable post-punk British Invasion." [says Mo!]

were you being sarcastic when you called the High School Musical soundtrack a "BONUS?"

just goes to show how pathetic this country is right now, not saying the arctic monkeys are worthy of the hype. but when the top two billboard albums are a disney channel soundtrack and kidz bop #9 you know there is something seriously wrong.

It's posts like this that make me keep coming back to this site.

Nah, it's because everyone in the US who likes the Arctic Monkeys downloaded the album for free, um I mean bought it on import months ago.

:b

it might just be because the Actic Monkeys aren't that good. i haven't been impressed by what i've heard (only one song - I didn't download the album like everybody else)

Posted by bryan | March 3, 2006 5:03 PM

^You're hating on an album when you've listenned to one song? And you have a music blog? You're a disgrace.

Posted by Trevor | March 3, 2006 8:06 PM

trevor - did i say anything about the whole album? no. i said MAYBE they aren't that good. i did not say "the Arctic Monkeys suck and nobody should ever listen to them." I was trying to clarify and indicate that I don't know if they suck or not, BUT that what little I had heard did not interest me. Try reading a little closer next time before you decide to go and piss off strangers.

Also - who the hell said I have a music blog? And a disgrace? To who? You? Oh no, I'm SO TERRIBLY SORRY TO HAVE RUINED YOUR LIFE by not having the same music taste as you or somehow impressing you with my own personal website.

I just think the Arctic Monkeys don't translate here, but I guess time will tell. 24 ain't bad. I don't know a single band that would turn that down. And honestly, anything to save us from the return of that godawful band The Killers.

Posted by camille | March 4, 2006 10:27 AM

im with camille, 24 is pretty impressive for a band like the arctic monkeys that are far from mainstream big over here

Posted by wes | March 4, 2006 10:36 AM

very true - that's quite impressive for any band, and really nothing to scoff at at all. and indeed, please no more Killers...

let's face it, kids spend lots of money and their parents spend lots of money on them. their parents are especially happy when they can find "wholesome" music like the soundtrack to High School Musical to get their kids into-- besides, this stuff is marketed like nobody's business. If you've ever watched Disney or Nickelodeon (yeah, I watch them, I admit it) every other commercial is for freaking Kidz Bop-- And I have to say, that's the one that cracks me up, cause the songs on Kidz Bop are songs by actual adult music group just sung by children-- I mean they sing like Green Day and stuff....it's freakish. But, I totally understand the High School Musical soundtrack being a big seller. I actually watched it. Yeah, Shut up. Those songs are damn catchy and if I was 13 I would be all about it too. That kid from Summerland can sure lip synch.

Eek, I'm sorry-- posting that 45 times was an accident. my bad.

"it might just be because the Actic Monkeys aren't that good."
"trevor - did i say anything about the whole album? no."
No, you didn't. You're right technically. But if you're so interested in not pissing off strangers, don't go suggesting bands 'arent that good' if you haven't listenned to them. You might have me confused, I'm not arguing for the Arctic Monkey's here, I think they're overrated, but online critics are bad enough we don't need them rating bands they haven't heard. Even if you didn't come out with a full page report of the album, you didn't need to.

As a British Arctic Monkeys fan i'd be surprised if the topics and the themes of their songs translated very well to the U.S. They are a very 'british' band and this is reflected in the lyrics. Does anyone here undertand what 'a bit frank spencer' means? Maybe good music is recognised in any culture though, time will tell...

Posted by chris | March 20, 2006 7:01 AM

It doesnt translate-the lyrics are both unsophisticated and *very* british...For US kids raised on hip-hop and fucking Nickleback this album might as well be in a foriegn language....Oh and its also no where near as good as the UK media wishes it was....and god damn the band is ugly...not that that really matters but....they are really tough on the eyes..

arctic monkeys rock! yeaaa!...ok i have to agree with the first person who posted: there is a problem here if the first two on the billboard are disney stuf.....

i dunno i personally think a lotta really talented bands come out of britain ^__^, also as well as canadian bands (yeaa!) and US. and a lot of other places i havent mentioned: like australia, europe, afria, south america...everywhere.
rock on... *so all thats left proves loves not only blind but deaf*...
ps. INTERNET MUSIC CRITICS SUCK ass. if you dont like a band's songs or the album or them, dont go around saying "arctic monkeys suck ass they're only talented because..." thats gay and so underrated. say smtng like...iunno "personally i dont usually listen to this type of music, so i dont really like the band". its un-offensive. and it wont piss the shit out of me and a lotta other ppl. alex turner<33. im out

FRANK SPENCER - To fully understand the term you would really have to have seen the 1970s British TV show SOME MOTHERS DO AV' EM.
"Frank Spencer" (played by Michael Crawford)was the star of the show...I'm sure it must be available on DVD so buy the box set and watch a few and then you'll understand...not sure Americans will understand the humour though...its very British.
