Still in Austin

Hey, it's been a crazy, but amazing week at SXSW (music Disney world). Sorry for the lack of updates on the site, but everyone needs a vacation I guess. I'm still in Austin - won't be back until Monday night. The site should return to normal then. That includes a ton of SXSW pictures and recap. I'd stay up all night and post now, but I'm pretty run down and about to pass out.

A few more highlights from the past few days: an amazing set by the Fiery Furnaces, seeing Voxtrot three times, Love is All, We are Wolves and White Rose Movement, seeing Forward Russia and the Grates again, Editors, Ghostface Killa, Boy Least Likely To, Rosanne Cash, and a show that had Lifetime, My Chemical Romance and Jonah Matranga all in a row.

Some artists who played that I didn't see: Frog Eyes, The Rakes, Towers of London, Mystery Jets, Art Brut, Wolfmother, The Presets, Okkervil River, The Stills, The Pretenders, Flaming Lips, CYHSY, Morrissey, Billy Bragg, Echo and the Bunnymen, Spoon, Norah Jones, and the Beastie Boys.

Morrissey was amazing. There are pictures to prove it! (click on my name)

Nada Surf was great too!

The Rakes were pretty good. The Beasties I heard were great. I hardly saw any of the ones you didn't see nor the ones you did see yet I was still able to see like 10 shows a day. THAT is how much music there was lol

The Stills were definitely a big surprise. They're onto something pretty great and kicked ass. The new songs sound epic. Seriously the best sounding band I'd seen all weekend.

The Vacation, Jack's Mannequin, Jean Grae, Head Automatica, Cut Chemist, The Secret Machines, Mr. Lif, Blackalicious, Spoon, Echo & The Bunnymen, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, The Living Things, Juliette and the Licks, Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders, Blue October, Arctic Monkeys. Audio monitor problems caused The Secret Machines' set to not be as great as it could've been. It took them forever to get going. They were pissed. Juliette Lewis...damn she is hot! She surfed the crowd twice! No photos to show of, shame on me. Maybe next year.

What's wrong with you people? Far and away the highlight was the Superchunk show on Saturday night, their first in about more than two years outside of Chapel Hill, and there were only two of those. Oh, and Steve Wynn, at various venues. That band he has is incredible. Of course, if you like My Chemical Romance, well, you probably don't own many Dream Syndicate records.

Good to finally meet you BV!
I saw Art Brut at Beauty Bar on Saturday afternoon. Their other shows looked great but I was so happy to see them with a super small crowd where I could talk to them beforehand and stand in front and dance comfortably during the set.
I am in the process of uploading some snaps to my flickrstream.

BV,
Just heard that you were eating BBQ in Austin...Say it isn't so!

someone needs to end Voxtrot now

Posted by lllllll | March 20, 2006 11:40 AM

can you imagine if voxtrot ended now? it's be like james dean syndrome. there would be shrines erected to their fun pop tunes and you have to endure even more talk of them and how they could have had the world, it would ruin your life, so do yourself a favor and shut your mouth.

Agreed about The Stills. One of my highlights. They've grown so much. Really good band with their own sound now. Great new songs.

I just wanted to spread the word about this:

If anyone's looking for something to do tonight some Japanese punk/rock bands are playing at Knitting Factory. They all played at SXSW and are embarking on a mini US tour. All of the bands are great. Acts like The Stance Punks and ELLEGARDEN play completely sold out tours in giant venues across Japan. I definitely recommend coming out and catching them in an intimate venue while you can!

Benten Tokyo presents
Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re, The Rodeo Carburettor, The Emeralds, Stance Punks, Pe'z, Ellegarden

I'm recapping today, trying to remember four days where most of the drinks were free and bands played much shorter sets. Lots babbling and a bunch of pictures. But don't worry, none of you BV! ;)
