Tunde of TV on the Radio played Tonic

Guest BV reviewer Jason Newman (of Hip Hop Karaoke NYC) caught TV on the Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe’s solo show at Tonic in NYC last night (March 13, 2006). His review below…

TUNDE PLAYING TONIC, NYC (bigger ones here)

Last night (Monday), TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe played a brief, yet spectacular, set at Tonic, opening for New York freak-folk group Tall Firs. The 30-minute set, comprised of both old material and songs from the band’s upcoming album, (which believe me, as a hardcore fan, will make MANY Top 5 lists come December. Instant classic.) consisted solely of Adebimpe and his Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler, which in non-nerd terms loops your vocals and puts various effects on them….

…Adebimpe, now officially the Jamie Lidell of the hipster art-rock set, sang over a bed of his own “Mmmmms” and “Oooooohhs” vocals in a set that included “Young Liars,” an untitled solo track with a soulful reggae-style vocal sound, and new tracks “Dirty Whirlwind” and “A Method.” Tunde seemed genuinely modest when he said he was just singing “sketches” of the new songs “because there are usually people who can actually play backing me up,” but his performance to a crowd of about 75 people reaffirmed the massive vocal talent he possesses. Putting aside the slightly awkward attempt by Adebimpe to get the crowd to lay down a beat with handclaps (You tried your best, Tunde!), the show was yet another example of why TVOTR is one of the most creative bands on the planet right now. Oh, did I mention the sheer brilliance of the new album?!?!
