vegan Nick Zinner's favorite vegan restaurants

What are some of your favorite places to get vegan food in New York City? And elsewhere?

Nick Zinner: NYC is the easiest place to be vegan—it’s truly awesome. My favorite is Zen Palate in Union Square. Pukk is a newish vegetarian/vegan Thai place on First Avenue and Fifth. Also, the vegan Sicilian frittata at Old Devil Moon on 12th between A and B is great, and the place used to be Lydia Lunch’s bedroom. Kate’s on Fourth and B is probably the best punk rock vegan/vegetarian greasy spoon.

As far as other cities, I’d say Real Food Daily in L.A., McFoster’s in Omaha, Sipz in San Diego, and Pizza Luce in Minneapolis are super yum.

Old Devil Moon is fantastic, and has orgasmic mac-n-cheese with rosemary. Great veggie burgers too.

I think Angelica Kitchen (300 e 12th)is the most authentic vegan restaurant in NYC and maybe the oldest. Zen Pallete is too commercial for my tastes.

I only went to Angelica Kitchen once, but I was incredibly disappointed. The other three people I've known to go there were disappointed, too. Does "authentic" equal "bland," or are we missing something?

Thanks for giving info on vegan places in NYC and elsewhere. To continue the other city category:

The two vegan Herbivore restaurants in San Francisco. Medicine (Zen) is also super good.

Veganopolis in Portland, OR is also great!

Well now we know why Nick is so skinny! I had no idea he was vegan, but it isn't surprising. Also, that's cool that Old Devil Moon used to be Lydia Lunch's bedroom. You learn something new every day. I've been going there for 10 years or so and never knew that.

Angelica is far and away the best restaurant in the world. There simply is no contest. Number two would be Mildred's in London.

regarding Angelica, yes authentic does occasionally equal bland to some tastebuds. This place is my wife's favorite and I like it but am not crazy about it. My all-time favorite happens to be in Los Angeles. Real Foods Daily. Now if they open a location in NYC...

I don't understand what makes a vegan restaurant more "authentic" than another, or what makes one "too commercial." It's not like Zen Palate is the Hard Rock Cafe of vegan food.

Old school, minimal processing without too many additional ingredients and lots of whole grains.
Angelica and Zen Palate are 2 distinctly different styles.
Authentic. Angelica Kitchen is strictly ORGANIC & VEGAN, whereas Zen Palate is strictly neither but mostly vegan and not exactly organic.

Well, Zen Palate kind of IS the Hard Rock Cafe for vegetarians...I can't say I would eat there willingly ever again.

I havea question for ya - I'm interested in spreading the vegan goodness in the Park Slope area (and surrounding 'hoods). I feel that there are not enough QUALITY options, especially for pastries and "breakfast grub" in the area. What do you guys think about this? Rant please.

I offer a vegan meal delivery service - any feedback on that would be appreciated too! www.bluenotefoods.com
